I've always enjoyed more forward thinking music( progressive) if you will but this guy just has so much damn soul. this guy and ray lamontagne just kill at what they do. so glad to have cats like this around in my generation.
@spencergraysonwagley I know that the key of the song is B flat (played as if it's in G with a capo on the third fret). The harmonica could be a G minor. The bridge mirrors the chords of the chorus, which begins with a G minor. If it isn't a B flat that's my best guess.
Heard this wonderfull tune in the recordstore some weeks ago. thought it was something from the 60ts; Donovan or Early Dylan. And got suprised when i learned that it was a totaly new recording. Beautifull!
We need more artists like Ryan Adams. Real writers and performers instead of the wave of bubblegum pop, that the record labels keep foisting on us. One thing I would say about Ryan though, and that is I wish he would exercise a little more self imposed "quality control". He's really prolific, but it sounds to me like he records absolutely every idea he comes up with. I'd like him to maybe record 10 of every song he writes. Then you'd see a killer album.
I've been a huge Ryan Adams fan since Whiskeytown. Have every record, single, demo I can get my hands on. Have seen him live 9 times. In my opinion, Ashes and Fire is his best work since Gold. Terrific writing, great melodies. Will go down as one of his best, no question. Can't wait to see you in Michigan again, Ryan. Thank you for years of great music and memories.
@TheAdvocateMan since Gold? Come on, man. Gold was overproduced. Some real gems that shined after that record (New York, New York on the piano, the slowed down Firecracker, La Cienega without the double guitar). Best thing since LIH would be more accurate. Although Cold Roses is fantastic.
@RonanOShea See, I love Gold as much for the quality of the writing/lyrics as for the music and the melodies. I'm a musician (play guitar and harmonica) and a professional writer. I find the writing in many of Ryan's songs to be, well, pedestrian and even nonsensical at times. But that's just me. Art is art. I find the writing on Ashes and Fire to be compelling, visual and visceral, stirring. Conjures up memories of Whiskeytown and, yes, Gold. Of course, I love Heartbreaker too.
@Blaxland02@bork217 Actually, I've been reading up online and most think he uses an Eb (which I haven't personally tried). I've got a Bb and it works just as well...
@Blaxland02@bork217, it's a Hohner Blues Harp in Bb, not Eb. You'll find that Ryan uses a Bb with the capo on 3rd fret pretty often, so if you get one you can play a range of his songs i.e. Ashes and Fire; Firecracker; Come Pick Me Up; Dance All Night; I Taught Myself How to Grow and many more...
@dannywhitenospace I use an Eb to play Firecracker and Dance All Night. Last night, I used the Bb while figuring out Ashes and Fire on the acoustic. Much better for that particular song.
with cool and silvery eyes and a heart that was fit for desire, drowned in a river of tears oh a river she cried left her with a heart... made of ashes and fire.
One day there was a silence and it washed through the town,
and there was no reason to speak so no one made a sound,
her eyes were indigo and (the cats was all calico?!?) and the sail boats they all sailed by... and a river she cried.

As he stared past the fire,
His hunger to leave well it gnawed his poor heart alive,
Her skin smelled like black cherry, blossom perfume, the sail boats they all sailed by... and a river she cried.
and the wind was suddenly sweeter than Roosevelt pine,
The windows broke out and the cigarette smoke was drifting by,
The (bums on the barrier?!?) were swallowed in the lights as cars rumbled by in the night... screaming run for your life.
