We know mutation rates and we know phylogenetic trees, so we get the 'molecular clocks' for example, in addition to the rate of sediment deposition we measure compared to the fossils in rock layers - they match! Your point on 10 months is interesting. Day should be taken to be whatever people at that time meant. My understanding is 'day' meant then what we mean by 24 hours.
