That comment was a complete failure

The making of the bridge is a metaphor between strengthening the two worlds he lived in. The real world where he was an outcast and nervous, and Terabithia where he was strong and confident.

The bridge metaphors the coming of those two worlds, so that Jess can bring the lessons he learnt in Terabithia with Leslie into the real world.

Also, the main theme of the book is "life is short, live it to the fullest."

The bridge metaphor just ties the themes 2gther

Well, I don't agree with you. That's definitely not the theme of the book (it could be a 'sub-theme', but definitely not the theme), and that he definitely builds the bridge in the book for a reason... Either way it was stupid that they expelled it from it.

Besides, the writer of the book co-operated with the team in the new movie, and her son wrote the script with her help, so it's definitely much closer to what it is supposed to be than this one. End of story.

That IS the main theme of the book. The building of the bridge is the final representation and metaphor.

Actually, in this movie I believe the bridge is actually naturally created. When a log falls forming a bridge.

Perhaps it's a even deeper meaning that Leslie is helping Jess slowly pull both worlds together.

Some thoughts on the old vs. the new:

1. The acting is MUCH better in the new. I don't think anyone can deny that.

2. Sorry, but I don't like the "cool" Leslie. Leslie is supposed to be an unpopular tomboy, which is part of what made their relationship special.

3. I'm glad the new one uses a rope instead of a tree as the bridge. The tree makes no sense.

4. The new one should have included the "I hate her!" line. That was one of the most poignant parts of the book.

Flashier effects and a prettier cast don't necessarily make a 'better' movie so long as the story and characters are handled well. I haven't seen the entirety of this version so I'm withholding judgement.

The newest film was quite good but I did have some problems with how pretty and cool Leslie was (I always viewed her as more of a quirky tomboy), how over the top the CG scenes were and the way they brushed aside the issue of guilt.

In the end the book will always be my personal favorite :3

Yes, it's a tragic tearjerker. Seems like in this version, the protagonist and his family seem more rural in their diction. When the dad in the new one says, 'Where in God's name were you?' kinda reminds me of when he said a similar line in 'Walk The Line.'

My guess is because they changed a lot of things around for the new one, while the old one follows the book WORD FOR WORD. When I first saw the new one, I was a little surprised at how different it was, but that's become one of the things I appreciated about it; while the old one was lazy and uncreative, the new one was imaginative and moving.
