The trumpets sound magnificent. I'm going to be playing this piece and I really need to know how to play this with that kind of style.!! My director says the more I listen to this, the better I'll play it. Lets test this out, shall we?(:
u know, im in a happy mood, let's not hate those dislikers, for if they were not there, there would be no way to show that the majority people still have a sense of music
I'm going to be playing this song in my Jazz class for a concert, and i don't think we'll EVER sound this good. I luv this song and i hope we don't make it sound bad.
My jazz director always went on about how Duke was better technically than Basie, more complex and varied and all that. I agree, but I still like Basie much more :)
Christian McBride did this as a bass trio on his first disc. All you folks who got to play it in school jazz band were lucky, my band teacher always made fun of me about it...
I love when they add the saxes in around measure 20. I played this song at a jazz festival in downtown Detroit and we pulled in a crowd even though it was raining buckets. Such an incredible song. Count Basie is a legend without a doubt.
Haha, it's so awesome how everyone is playing this. We got this chart a couple weeks ago and we've ran through it a couple times in class. It's just so awesome, everyone is jealous of me when I get the Harmon mute on my trumpet. Really suggest this to anyone who hasn't played it! :D
@Skiine Niel Hefti - the original version is on the LP "The Atomic Basie" - no greater sound in any type of music. The tenor solo of Lockjaw on "Whirlybird" ranks along the Paul Gonsalves solo "Diminuendo in Crescendo". I wore out three or four LPs, and was so happy till a CD version was available.
That sax section has got the puff of a jumbo-jet, this must be one of Basie´s best recordings, thanks.
