  • That sax section has got the puff of a jumbo-jet, this must be one of Basie´s best recordings, thanks.

  • Que grande Count Basie por DIOSSS

  • Hat jemand ne idee wo ich für das stück die partitur für big band herbekomme? (und zwar ohne die einzelnen stimmen sondern nur die patitur)

  • Man that saxophone is nice. Not a single misplaced note.

  • Happy days! Remeber my dad geting 'the atomic mr. basie' out and us kids playing along with kitchen implements.....happy days, superb music.

  • words can not express how great they play

  • The trumpets sound magnificent. I'm going to be playing this piece and I really need to know how to play this with that kind of style.!! My director says the more I listen to this, the better I'll play it. Lets test this out, shall we?(:

  • That lead trumpet.... <3

  • The video skips 3:33. :)

  • u know, im in a happy mood, let's not hate those dislikers, for if they were not there, there would be no way to show that the majority people still have a sense of music

  • Pure class :)

  • I'm going to be playing this song in my Jazz class for a concert, and i don't think we'll EVER sound this good. I luv this song and i hope we don't make it sound bad.

  • the beginning sounds quite a bit like the intro to shiny stockings

  • Why does it only show my veiws? weird......

  • I get to play this in mai jazz band :D

  • Amazing orchestra....probably the finest ever. The Buddy Rich Big Band was also superb. Cannot forget Ted Heath too....oh and Rob McConnell.

  • " Dios Bendiga tu Alma "

    21/08/1904 - 28/07/2011.

    Gracias.

  • This is such a classic Basie sound...and classic Basie is about as good as it gets!

  • thumb up if you still listen this in 2011

  • @ayrton105 thumb up if you still play this in 2011 :D

  • 0:58 to 1:44--best sax solo EVER!!!! That is the $HIT! Untouchable......

  • @Bix12 -Still the best sax solo around--it's perfection.

  • Anyone else think the shout is begging for shake? (second note concert Ab)

  • I'm playing this song at the Monterey Jazz Festival Jazz Camp in my big band!!

  • :D

  • This is music to my ears as opposed to my ass.

  • My jazz director always went on about how Duke was better technically than Basie, more complex and varied and all that. I agree, but I still like Basie much more :)

  • @jazzaces294 I agree. Much more soul ... much more.

  • wonderful

  • Absolutely epic sax solo---:58 to 1:35 Come on! You gotta be kiddin' me! Itsa Monster!

  • Middle part's faintly reminiscent of the intro music from the Naked Gun movies.

  • @sgttedmadore Same here :D up in seattle

  • and that's why I would have loved to live in that time

  • Christian McBride did this as a bass trio on his first disc. All you folks who got to play it in school jazz band were lucky, my band teacher always made fun of me about it...

  • @Chrinkus that McBride Cd is where I first heard it, pretty cool

  • i play bass in my jazz band and i have to learn this. Good song though

  • 3:35 is so dissapointing

  • @ian45451

    FTW! Yeah.

  • the hunter college jazz band just did this song based off this actual recording.

As a pianist I absolutely love playing Basie Big Band charts. I love replicating the Basie sound. This is just awesome.

  • I wish my jazz band would play this instead of John Hookers boom boom :/

  • Rapaz.. que boa música. ;)

  • my grandfather wrote music for basie!!!! love this!!!!!

  • its great, sorry make that the best.i just love this song thanks for uploading it.amellov65.

  • Swing was the precursor of swag. In 2010 terms Basie would be boss.

  • That is so hep!!! :DD:

  • Swingly intoxicating!

  • Looking at the 5 who dislike Splanky, I guess Tea Partiers sometimes get in here by accident!

  • @wlipman ----errrr, you mean "tea baggers", right? ;-)

  • This was always one of my favorite tunes to play. And unfortunately i only played it once lol

  • The Classic Jazz ! Feeling like having a glass of vine while listen to this song !

  • Love IT!!!

  • Awesome phrasing on the sax starting at around 1:00 to around 1:23

  • Man this is Great!!! Thank you so much for this!!!!

  • I love when they add the saxes in around measure 20. I played this song at a jazz festival in downtown Detroit and we pulled in a crowd even though it was raining buckets. Such an incredible song. Count Basie is a legend without a doubt.

I especially love the big break around 1:44

    :D

  • we are working on this in my high school jazz band and it is hella fun on trumpet

  • @erty768

You know it's composed by a trumpet player, right? Neal Hefti.

  • my jazz choir is doing a version of Splanky that has lyrics, including a part for the saxophone solo. It's pretty epic.

  • Listening to Count basie makes me believe in God

  • who is soloing here?

  • @fabriziocolonna73 I think the tenor saxophone solo was played by Frank Foster.

  • @fabriziocolonna73 Frank Foster

  • i played this song in spain once wen i was 15 on the alto sax

    true story

  • @SpartanOnDeck --so?

  • choice stuff

  • Listen to those drum roles! Especially around 2:29.

  • @theorganloft That's not a roll, mate. A roll is extended. That's more like just double stroking a few of the hits.

  • who ever dislikes this song is stupid

  • @TheMilesL

    you are absolutely right.

  • no objections

  • @TheMilesL

    :)

  • @TheMilesL I'am stupid, but I like it a lot!

  • wow, can't beieve how many people say they play this in jazz. it's so fun to play, i got a trumpet part for it and it rocks

  • my Band director wanted me to prepare this to play on the piano in a few hours for concert

  • drumming for this song in grade 8 jazz right now, this is the easiest song to accent the snare on ever!

  • woo hoo i play this in a big band. Trumpet :D

  • Haha, it's so awesome how everyone is playing this. We got this chart a couple weeks ago and we've ran through it a couple times in class. It's just so awesome, everyone is jealous of me when I get the Harmon mute on my trumpet. Really suggest this to anyone who hasn't played it! :D

  • Who's the composer? where did you get your arrangement from?

  • You'll have to let me check my sheet. I don't have my folder with me right now, but I'll get back to you on this comment!

  • @Skiine Niel Hefti - the original version is on the LP "The Atomic Basie" - no greater sound in any type of music. The tenor solo of Lockjaw on "Whirlybird" ranks along the Paul Gonsalves solo "Diminuendo in Crescendo". I wore out three or four LPs, and was so happy till a CD version was available.
