My dogs go crazy when strangers come the door (postman, etc). Not so with my friends and family. I can get treats, yell, give commands, etc, and they totally ignore me when it's a stranger. It takes several tries to get them to go inside the crate when normally they just do it on the first command to kennel up in other situations. My dogs ARE trained! I'm glad they warn me when strangers come over, that's their NATURE. And I betcha that thieves will skip over MY house and go the next one...
People really need to have 1. realistic expectations of their dog, 2. Be Patient enough to help their dog learn a new behaviour. Crating is a legitimate management tool - you are using it to stop your dog from practicing a behaviour that you don't want it to practice - barking at people at the front door. This is an appropriate way to control a situation while you work on training your dog appropriate greeting at the front door. If you don't help your dog be calm and relaxed - it won't be.
My dog goes MENTAL when someone knocks at the door.. The only thing that will put her in a calm state, is barking too much, and running out of breath.
Imprisoning the dog doesn't sound like a good idea. I want my dog to get used to a stranger and to stop barking at them. Why isolate them from someone you want your dog to see as a friend??? Expert Village, hire an EXPERT, or at least someone who's answer to my question isn't "lock your dog in a crate".
1:34 - 1:37 So the only thing my dog wants is attention or a treat? -_-
We live our lives calmly and ask eachother if the other wants to play with bodylanguage and happy words. Barks from his side. Hasty movements and we wrestle sometimes. A dog that loves you and wants to lick all over you when you get home, is lovely... I wouldn't want my dog to sit there and wait. But we do have times when he has to, and he gets awarded with attention if he's calm during those times.
I tried putting my dog in the crate and he goes even crazier. I tried having guests give him treats and he barks while chewing....lol...completely useless.
Barking is a difficult behavior to control in dogs because they find it so reinforcing. It is something that will take time on your part working with your dog and a reputable trainer. This short video is intended to give you background and to help you manage the behavior. There is no shortcut to this one. Good luck! --Heidi D

The crate isnt being used as punishment, it's being used as a management tool.

i am pretty sure that useing the crate as a punnishment is NOT a good idea and can cause problems for the dog later on.
