Marvellous songs. Even with considerable vocal imperfections Elisabeth Soderstrom gives such a vibrant and theatrical interpretation that i'm caught up in the élan. I first heard her as Tatiana in Eugen Onegin and will never forget that strange color and vocal passion!
Söderström's album was my introduction to the Rachmaninoff songs, and Op 4 No 5 was my favorite. Such pure voice and so delicate. Thank you, Fabio, for bringing back the memories of the old days of a young lad.
Thank you so very, very much, Fabio, for posting these lieder. This is particularly notable given that in this way, thanks to you, we're able to hear the entire 6 songs of Rakhmáñinov's Opus 4!!
Usually, one's fourth opus isn't usually among one's greatest or even great works. Sure, the composer went on to write greater stuff (including lieder); yet, what maturity, what mastery, what absolute beauty!! Even with this first collection of songs, he proves his genius and greatness!!
Furthermore, excellent choice to put the passionate yet ultimately-positive 6th song right after the dolorous melismatic-weeping of the fifth as one finds that the harvest one was waiting to gather has been scattered irretrievably and pitilessly by the wind, with only weeds of sorrow being the result!! Just the kind of piece one could hear in one's head at the moment when a supreme disaster strikes!!!!

I just found out that Rach composed these songs when he was 17-20 years old.
