Even if family members believe they are in love, that does not trump the fundamental human rights issues of potential babies that may be born. If an incest couple doesn't want a baby and has themselves 'fixed', then maybe then under those restrictions it may be legalised, if ever.

It's a myth that society accepts them - society has simply been instructed to accept them, so any bad feeling towards them has been internalised. The same with racism - the world is as racist as ever, but it is now more secretive about it. So, none of these taboos have actually been deconstructed and their subjects have not been accepted - it has just gone underground, where it is harder to control.

Thus, gay couples are doing no harm in having one, as it should be a perfectly healthy baby. However, incest couples run a great risk of giving birth to a child with health defects and mental deficiencies. This is the issue.

none of my business who you love and whatnot, but choosing to have kids with family member that is known to share exactly 50% of your genetic makeup is almost like opting to give the poor kid recessive genetic defects and a lower level of general immune system function.
I personally would prefer to do whatever I can to make sure that any future kids I might have are born healthy. Wouldn't you?

birth defects are just visible, extreme examples of bad health. There are less visible consequences of having parents who share alot of genes, like being more prone to infection than most people due to having two copies of the same allele for many of the genes related to immune system function (according to Parham's immunology text), or having far worse familial problems like heart disease or cancer later in life.
then there's the problem of being ostracized by the people around the poor kid

sorry for the confusion. I'm not referring to first cousins as they, from parents who are full siblings, would share an average of 1/8 of their genes, which isn't that much. I was only referring to those who are too closely related, ie parent/child.

To have children when you are aware of the consequences you will bestow onto the child, just convinces me that the desicion to have kids is very selfish and self-centered. Not caring about the health of offspring is worse than consentual incestual relationships. Just because the kid is okay now does not mean genetic related problems will not develope later on.
