I used to play this as a kid in Slovakia, although it scared the bejesus out of me and i had NO idea what i was supposed to be doing. I kept coming back to it anyway. Great game. Thanks for posting this!!
@zpekt Youre right. This game has really cool scary atmosphere in it. It was the same thing with many of the games I played back then 25 years ago. Like Impossible Mission. I had no idea what I was doing, but it didnt keep me away from playing it hours and hours. Thanks for watching my video!
I remember buying this game when I first saw it at the local store. It had a Indiana Jones style character holding a torch on the cover of the box. I was suprised to see a space ship land and an astronaut with a little black dog walk into the tomb. It didn't bother me though both ideas were cool.
I never succeeded at this because I always ran away from those ghosts! Obviously I was too lazy or too stupid to read the instructions! :D A maze-game I fell in love with recently is "Tunnel Runner" on the Atari 2600. It's amazing what they have done here. "Scarabaeus" is the better game I suppose but man, "Tunnel Runner" is more addicting.
@DocHackenbush I have never played Atari 2600 myself nor even seen one in person. This game is more like a puzzle game when tunnel runner seems more like an arcade game. I'd play them both if I could :D
@AlfredRusselWallace I've seen some C64 demos where they have really pushed the system into smooth 3d graphics, but this one is one of the few games that is built on such code.
The makers of this game are surely important dudes in teams making the best games today. This game looks innovative, technologically superb and something very different.
If they are not in the gaming industry, I'm sure they've had a great career elsewhere. Genious stuff.
@pundewhee I did some searching in C64 database with the programmers names and only could find 2-3 more games some of these guys were part of making. Unless they changed into other computers.
Cool intro, I love the little dog just getting inside the door. Yeah that is smooth 3D action for 1MHz. It reminds me of Tunnel Runner on the 2600 but way cooler, love the Egyptian look. That heart beat SFX is most impressive, really adds to the tense atmosphere. A manually operated elevator, neat. Good stuff, I think i'll give Scarabaeus a go. :D
@TheBladeJunker Funny how you don't see a sign of the dog in the game itself. After seeing the video uploaded here the elevator grapihcs actually make sense. You set he elevator from top down view and you have to crank the elevator down manually. Too bad it gave no hint that you actually have to move joystic in diagonals, not in the main 4 directions.
I just found out that a couple of these guys did Impossible Mission II on the Amiga!
Two of the best games on both machines.
