I remember getting my dad to ask Videotron and then later known as Cable & Wireless why it says 24 hours a day on cable every night when it closes down, why aren't we gettting it? Their reply was something like "we're sorry but we do not carry it 24 hours"
I was like 4 years old I memba I would be running around the house with my cousins cuz tnt came up n it was boring. Lol I still remember this. Good times
Where's the promo where they play the funky music and show face-paced clips including scenes like Space Ghost being an impostor, Dee Dee screaming, and Wilma and Betty's hair getting messed up.
I have extremely fond memories of cartoon network switching over to TNT at 9 pm sharp everyday!! We'd just finish dinner & our parents would take control of the TV remote from then on.....miss those good 'ol days...nice memories of 'em!! However I'd like to mention that Cartoon network sucks big time these days..with all those crappy japanese cartoons (pokaemon etc).... big shit load!! Cartoons from power zone, Dexter's lab & those christmas specials which would be aired through December wr gr8!
so how would one tell time over there? for example, if I said the show starts at 11pm, would it just be common to say "it starts at 2300"? or would I just say it starts at 11? Stupid question, I know, but you don't often see military time over here in the states.
@chrisz71 Like the USA, here in the UK we don't use 24 hour timings on TV at all really, but it is common to do so within continental Europe, and as this was recorded from the then pan-European version of Cartoon Network and TNT, then they usually gave out the 24hours times all the time.
@steviegTVreturns do you happen to have any of the tnt commercials on cartoon network? i remember they were recorded in black and white, and it was usually with a man in a coat talking and narrating
or water fights in summer, then come home and have my tea, play some more ps1, watch tom and jerry then wait fo my dad to get in and we would watch films on tnt or wcw nitro wrestling. And sometimes we would get a take away, or rent a movie from blockbusters and maybe a ps1 game. Ive never been happier since, and probably never will.
Wow this takes me back. I used to love watching tom and jerry, johnny bravo, 2 stupid dogs, cow and chicken, i am weezal, the flintstones, the jetsons, powerpuff girls and so on. I remember my plans for the day would consist of get up early, play with toys in toy box or master system or later ps1 for abit. Then watch some cartoons or saturday morning kids shows like live and kicking. Eat cereal. get my bmx out and knock on for my mates, ride round all making little fires or peg guns.
When I was a child, I used to be sad that Cartoon Network had finished for the day but I liked the fact that it showed a little bit of a cartoon and that the R looked like a hand and the T looked like a pin also I liked it when the letters were bouncing around.
God I remember this so clearly. I would watch WCW Nitro on a Friday night, and there was an hour where WWF Raw is War crossed over with it. If I remember correctly, Nitro was 9-11, and Raw was 10-12. Great times.
Boy, this takes me back. Nothing like watching a Mike Enos vs. Lizmark Jr. match on Thunder at 11:30 at night. Those truly were "the good old days", what the fuck were we thinking, LOL.
This sure takes me back, I used to watch TNT for WCW Nitro which came on straight after the Cartoon Network handover to TNT, so I saw the handover sequence many times.
those cartoon network and boomerang shows i like was Scooby doo where are you tom and jerry looney tunes (with bugs bunny) hong kong phooey the mask animated series ed edd n eddy dextors laboratory
Well remember in those days the other kids channels went off well earlier, TCC shut at 5PM, Nick shut at 7PM, as did Fox Kids, 9PM wasn't too bad for CN, but I do remember it being 8PM on fridays.
Hi,Stevie.Around 2000, 2001 due to TNT to TCM switch, the both CN and TNT/TCM Handovers changed. Do you think you can get them? As a clue, the TCM start-up was something like a sky with shiny stars creating different movie stars and CN start-up was something like the letters logo flipping from one to another and the 1st cartoon every mornin was a 5 min Atom Ant episode.
@taza95 so wait, was this in the beginning of TNT when it wasn't able to carry a channel by itself?? The same thing occurred with BET having to share space with the USA network and A&E sharing space with Nickelodeon before Nick at Nite came along...
@GD29 Basically this was the case here, this was the UK/European version of Cartoon Network and TNT that was broadcast to most Satellite and cable subscribers, but as soon as Digital came along the CN/TNT split went totally out the window.
@steviegTVreturns i fucking HATE this digital transition! i clearly remember when they kept on reminding the US population with cable tv that the digital switch was going to be in february 09 and by that time, like EVERYBODY was like "fuck that" and didn't do anything so to be nice, the big guys extended the deadline to later that june and there were still a lot not cooperating....now, like 97 percent of basic cable is wiped out til you go to digital...its SO fucking stupid!
@vladthehawk09 This was from 1998 so Adult Swim wasn't about then, this is from the British version of CN, Adult Swim in the UK is shown on FX. When Cartoon Network UK was created in 1993 the channel shared with TNT Classic Movies (as you see here) but as Digital up-take has increased CN is on it's own channel 24 hours a day. Hope that clears things.
What was that show on cartoon network...around 1995...was on early morning in the uk before school...all the characters were fruits..one was a strawberry and so on...does anyone know?
On Fridays I loved it when TNT came on as it was then time for WCW Monday Nitro(we got it 4 days later in UK), watched that for an hour then over to Raw on Sky Sports 3 usually.
It's different. Nickelodeon UK went to TV Asia. Later it went to The Paramount Channel/Paramount Comedy but Nickelodeon uk always have closed at 7pm until digital started in 1998.
Sky Movies Gold was broadcast on 2 channels for some reason, one for SMG on it's own and another after 10pm on Disney. But by the end of 1997, the Disney SMG share ended, SMG was replaced by Sky Box Office 1.
That's not correct. Sky Movies Gold timeshared with The Racing Channel and The Weather Channel UK. Later Sky Movies Gold moved to Sky Travel's transponder. The transponder with The Racing Channel and The Weather Channel later made way for Sky Box Office 2.
You are right, but what I'm saying is also right, why Sky decided to have SMG on 2 channels is a bit of a mystery, but when Sky Box Office (movies) launched, the practice was ditched.
Disney deffo timeshared with Sky Movies Gold at one point, I used to watch "Home Improvment" and remember it going to Sky Movies Gold ident shortly after.
Prior to December 1997 there were 2 versions of Sky Movies Gold on Astra/Sky, one as you on Disney Channel after 10pm and another on it's own channel, i think on Astra 1D. The one on Disney stopped when Sky Box Office started it's PPV movie service.
I'm not sure when it went on Sky Digital, but it wasn't when Sky Dig launched. It arrived on On Digital before Sky IIRC. Even if it was a couple of months. At one point CN were running regular ads for On Digital just before they closed down at 9pm. But as I've said it ended pretty quickly.
GO TO THE CN WEBSITE AND GO TO THE FEEDBACK AND SEND CN MESSAGES TO BRING BACK THE OLD CARTOONETWORK AND THE CLASSIC TOONAMI! If we keep sending them messages along with everyone else on youtube, we might have a good chance having the classic cartoonetwork and the old toonami back with its monday through friday scedual!Because the more we annoy CN the better! So WHO'S WITH ME!? COPY AND PASTE to all CN and toonami related videos!
With me having cartoon network when it closing down for the night it showed a programme slide for the addams family then shutdown this was before I had CN 24 hours
I'm sure this was a manual switch over, as they often missed que and after used to be a dog cartoon, I remember them going well over que (bounsy boxes) and a great episode was on about cartoon dogs "Thats my toilet seet, no thats my toilet seat" we used to be like PLEASEEEE CONTINUE WITH CARTOON NETWORK when the bouncy boxes was on and got very annoyed when TNT logo showed up!.
i missed out on so many channels being on analogue- i'd have to go round to my classmate's houses to watch TCC! a great channel TCC was...does anyone know the exact date it ended?
Nope, by Cable they actually meant by Cable. This was recorded several months before Sky Digital arrived, and even then CN took a few months to appear on Sky Digital. As said in the comments only a handful of Cable operators took the 24hr service.
I had cable, Cable North West they called themselves at the time(Virgin own them now). However as you said many didnt take the 24hr service. I was not too bothered though as it might have ment missing out on TNT and Monday Nitro.
Well I can remember this when i had NTL or Cable Tel as it was called back then it would have the colsedown but only for a few mins then the next programme for cartoon network because it used to be cn/tnt then i had cartoon network 24 hours
Yeah. I HATED it when TNT came on after Cartoon Network and The Paramount Channel/Paramount Comedy came on after Nickelodeon. Also when Sky Movies Gold/Sky Box Office 3 came after the The Disney Channel/Disney Channel.
I loved it when TNT came on on Friday Nights as it was WCW Monday Nitro time(they showed it 4 days after USA). I watched it for an hour then turned to Raw on Sky then back and forth it was amazing times.
I was surprised to see TCM in English on Hungarian TV, I was surprised Subtitles aren't provided, even BBC Prime offered shows with Hungarian Subtitles!
Is this on Analogue or Digital? In the UK on Analogue CN/TNT(TCM) always shared, but as soon as Digital arrived both stations were seperated into 24hour channels. Considering these were pan-european service I'd have expected it to be pretty much the same throughout the continent.
They thought it better to launch country/region specific versions of CN/TNT on satellite and cable rather than a multilingual CN & TNT in digital form on satellite and cable that would have been available across Europe.
Well i remember getting my parents to ask Videotron/Cable & Wireless if they get the 24hr feed and they said no. On the note of handing over on time, i remember most of the time it was usually a couple of minutes past 9 sometimes even like 5 minutes late. Cartoon Network sucks now, the logo and programming, all CRAP! And just to finish the comment off, you dont have any of the channel mosaic do you? I'm talking about the channel that had little preview boxes of what was on the cable channels.
We rarely/never got the mosiac on CWC when I saw it for the first time I was amazed, you got to see Sky Sports and Sky Movies about a 16th of its actual size, with no sound! If anything I always thought that the CN/TNT handovers were usually like 8.58/8.59 or so, but you are right, they were rarely 9.00pm on the dot.
Sadly not, I do remember staying up to watch the last one (that was when TNT became entertainment only after TCM launched) and it closed down as usual, without a whimper...
I do have a closedown from that perdiod that I will upload due course, but not at the moment.
I think Telewest took the digital satellite encrypted cable only 24h feed of CN and a cable operator in ireland did also take it but I don't know of nobody else who did.
boy, this brings back memories... I was a kid, spending time @ my late grandmoms place watching cn, and I remember being sad cuz I could never watch cn after 10 pm...
unrivaled channel with TNT, these were the best intros and the voice of TNT, classy! ;)

Can you explain to me why is there huge sidebars on there when you have Analogue Cable back in 1998?
Every night CN shows Courage the Cowardly Dog, Cow and Chicken also featuring I Am Weasel and Johnny Bravo CLASSICS!!

@Chao772VersionIV wasn't this before Cartoon Network went widescreen, most channels back then had huge sidebars.

But now TDC closes down and doesn't handover to any channels now.

Do you remember when Cartoon Network came on Sky Digital? Also was it free for a few time on there?
Weekrulez 2 years ago
I'm not sure when it went on Sky Digital, but it wasn't when Sky Dig launched. It arrived on On Digital before Sky IIRC. Even if it was a couple of months. At one point CN were running regular ads for On Digital just before they closed down at 9pm. But as I've said it ended pretty quickly.

I didn't know the handovers were manual! I often wondered why they were hardly ever on time, sometimes being up to 10 - 15 mins over!
TheAnnihilator778 3 years ago
damn: they are advertising cable- i bet cable and wireless got loads of kids calling them up at 9pm asking for them to put CN back on!
welshbird1998 3 years ago
I'm sure this was a manual switch over, as they often missed que and after used to be a dog cartoon, I remember them going well over que (bounsy boxes) and a great episode was on about cartoon dogs "Thats my toilet seet, no thats my toilet seat" we used to be like PLEASEEEE CONTINUE WITH CARTOON NETWORK when the bouncy boxes was on and got very annoyed when TNT logo showed up!.
bluecandylover 3 years ago
I remember this!!!!
CN use to show all the CN characters going to bed at 9pm, then TNT would come on. I use to be like 'OMG i have to go to bed now!'
I was so stupid xD

I remember that sometimes it pissed me off...
but it wasnt all so bad we got to watch classic MGM movies which was also a good thing.

i missed out on so many channels being on analogue- i'd have to go round to my classmate's houses to watch TCC! a great channel TCC was...does anyone know the exact date it ended?
welshbird1998 3 years ago
by cable they mean sky digtal
TARTANCAM 3 years ago
Nope, by Cable they actually meant by Cable. This was recorded several months before Sky Digital arrived, and even then CN took a few months to appear on Sky Digital. As said in the comments only a handful of Cable operators took the 24hr service.
steviegTVreturns 3 years ago
I had cable, Cable North West they called themselves at the time(Virgin own them now). However as you said many didnt take the 24hr service. I was not too bothered though as it might have ment missing out on TNT and Monday Nitro.
mononokehime316uk 3 years ago
i still remember this handover when i was living in Japan as a child, it used to piss me the fuck off!!!
ulrek54321 3 years ago
Well I can remember this when i had NTL or Cable Tel as it was called back then it would have the colsedown but only for a few mins then the next programme for cartoon network because it used to be cn/tnt then i had cartoon network 24 hours
jamesdelboy 3 years ago
Oh my god...I remember this. Back in the day of channels going off the air, Nickelodeon ending at like..7pm...Good times.
Comtel cable...my god, the nostalgia.
WankelStein 3 years ago
haha...i'm an american but I lived in the UK in the late 90s and remember this. It always pissed me off when TNT came on.
It was bad enough when Nickelodeon went off at 7 and switched to Paramount.
Good times.
bodorizz87 3 years ago
Yeah. I HATED it when TNT came on after Cartoon Network and The Paramount Channel/Paramount Comedy came on after Nickelodeon. Also when Sky Movies Gold/Sky Box Office 3 came after the The Disney Channel/Disney Channel.
myanthony1 3 years ago
I loved it when TNT came on on Friday Nights as it was WCW Monday Nitro time(they showed it 4 days after USA). I watched it for an hour then turned to Raw on Sky then back and forth it was amazing times.

Good old times, thanks so much for his post. Oh my God I miss this!!!! :(

Ahh, the good old handover. We here in Hungary get the Eastern-European CN which still shares with TCM. TCM: 21:00-03:00 CET...
SpaceNinja88 3 years ago
I have seen the Hungarian version a couple of times, but I noticed CN is in Hungarian and TCM in English which strikes me as a bit odd.
steviegTVreturns 3 years ago
Yeah, this is strange. Looks like they don't care about TCM AT ALL.
SpaceNinja88 3 years ago
I was surprised to see TCM in English on Hungarian TV, I was surprised Subtitles aren't provided, even BBC Prime offered shows with Hungarian Subtitles!
steviegTVreturns 3 years ago
That's why I say they don't care. Seriously, why can't they split these two already?
SpaceNinja88 3 years ago
Is this on Analogue or Digital? In the UK on Analogue CN/TNT(TCM) always shared, but as soon as Digital arrived both stations were seperated into 24hour channels. Considering these were pan-european service I'd have expected it to be pretty much the same throughout the continent.
steviegTVreturns 3 years ago
It's on analogue... so I guess it will never change.
SpaceNinja88 3 years ago

TheAnnihilator778 3 years ago 2
We rarely/never got the mosiac on CWC when I saw it for the first time I was amazed, you got to see Sky Sports and Sky Movies about a 16th of its actual size, with no sound! If anything I always thought that the CN/TNT handovers were usually like 8.58/8.59 or so, but you are right, they were rarely 9.00pm on the dot.
steviegTVreturns 3 years ago
omg memories i was literally addicted to cartoon network lol every day after school right up until night time
XloveisabattlefieldX 3 years ago
You dont have any of when TNT shut down for good do you?
TheAnnihilator778 3 years ago
Sadly not, I do remember staying up to watch the last one (that was when TNT became entertainment only after TCM launched) and it closed down as usual, without a whimper...
I do have a closedown from that perdiod that I will upload due course, but not at the moment.
steviegTVreturns 3 years ago
i remember this!
i also remember a friend in Swansea had Cabletel and they took the 24hr version of Cartoon Network
philonline31 3 years ago
was there a single cable provider who took the 24hr feed of Cartoon Network? As i know Cable & Wireless didnt, they had the shared feed.
TheAnnihilator778 3 years ago
I think Telewest took the digital satellite encrypted cable only 24h feed of CN and a cable operator in ireland did also take it but I don't know of nobody else who did.
AnthonyUK 3 years ago
NTL sure as hell didn't. I think I only ever saw one change-over like this, because when I ever stayed up late enough they were always running late.
