Acupuncture? Out of all the questions that could have been asked to a Cardinal, one asks about Acupuncture? Umm okay. Harry potter question was good though.
Harry Potter is understood to be fiction. Compare that to Catholic mythology which is mostly fiction but presented as fact. Harry Potter, whether you find it amusing or not, is at least honest about what it is. Also, nobody is compelled to read Harry Potter, nobody is required to believe it. Compare that to Catholic teaching.
It is against Catholic doctrine to carry out any medical procedure that has not shown itself to be scientifically safe and/or effective. Acupuncture would fall into the category of not being safe and/or effective.
Acupuncture should be banned from being practiced in any Catholic run hospital or healthcare facility.
@0ViewTube0 Do you have a source to back up that statement? I'm not even Catholic, but it seems doubtful to me that the church has an official position on medical procedures based on effectiveness. In that case, it would be against Catholic teaching to get chemotherapy for cancer. It's certainly not "safe" and is quite often ineffective.
@chipk77 Please refer to the Vatican’s website, or a website directly answering to the Vatican, such as that of the USCCB.
Though chemotherapy has many negatives, no less, it is indeed a statistically effective treatment for cancer.
(Keep in mind there is also the issue of morality. E.g., an abortion procedure can be both safe and effective, but it’s the morality the Catholic Church takes issue with.)
Again, because it is ineffective, acupuncture is considered unacceptable.
@0ViewTube0 Um, no, you provide me with a link. You made the claim. Back it up. Don't try to pass off the burden of proof. Who says acupuncture is ineffective.
@0ViewTube0 Do you know what a link is? I don't see any. Neither document you cite here supports your position. Acupuncture is neither "new age," "occult," "magic," nor does it have anything to do with Aquarius, which is what new age is all about. New Age has to do with Western Astrology, which even if acupuncture had anything to do with astrology, it would be Eastern. I have no eason to defend acupuncture as I've never had it or have any desire to, but your argument lacks merit.
@chipk77 I'm sorry but you are incorrect, and I suggest you do some further study on acupuncture as it relates to medical science. When you do you will learn it is indeed part of something called New Age Medicine - the medical arm of the New Age belief movement. You will also learn that it is not based on medical science.
BTW: The items I cited is not simply things I alone came up with.
@0ViewTube0 Yeah? Check this out. online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704841304575137872667749264.html Enjoy. Just because we don't fully understand it, doesn't make it magic or evil. You have not dealt with any of my responses other than to repeat your claims that I'm wrong. That's not a valid form of argumentation.
@chipk77 The link doesn't work (which is exactly why I don't like to include such things in comments). I'd love to read the article but please provide me with the exact title.
I fully understand acupuncture - understand that it's basically useless, and goes against Catholic medical care directives.
@0ViewTube0 Not sure why that wouldn't work, but if you go to online.wsj.com and search for acupuncture, you'll find a couple articles detailing how it's being used and definitely has measurable affects on subjects. Whether it's just a placebo affect, or if it really works, something certainly happens, and suffering people are given relief. If you want to stay in the dark ages just because you don't understand something, feel free. Worked out well for the Catholic church in the past.
@chipk77 Not exactly seeing things that hit upon the subject, but I'll keep looking. In the meantime, put this on in your crack pipe and smoke it: theness.com NeurologicaBlog entry from March 25, 2011 entitled "Another acupuncture fail."
Keep in mind the cardinal used the word "cure." Do you actually think any kind of placebo would accomplish that?
If I bought into acupuncture I'd still be in the dark ages, perhaps even further back than that.
@0ViewTube0 You don't understand. I'm sure I could find "scientific" articles, especially of the neurological type, that would completely explain human consciousness and spirituality by natural means, but I'm sure you wouldnt' accept that as evidence against a spiritual realm. The point is, I can find articles against the safety and effectiveness of aspirin. You're just picking and choosing your sources because you have a predisposition against anything you don't understand.
@chipk77 Would'ya shut up already with the 'you don't understand' stuff?!
In terms of what you were trying to point me towards at wjs.com I give you this gift. Read it and weep: Science-Based Medicine.org entry from March 24, 2010 entitled "Placebo effects revisited."
Acupuncture is not scientific, ergo, it goes against Catholic medical directives.
Acupuncture is grouped within New Age beliefs that rely on some inner or other source of healing (magic or sorcery), and not on medical science. This is touched upon in a Vatican document called, “Jesus Christ the bearer of the water of life,” that stems from Catechism #2117.
Also, study after reliable medical study shows there is no benefit to employing acupuncture. And it’s certainly not a “cure” as the cardinal in the video states.

I know a lot of priests, who were succesfully treated with acupuncture. The doctors doesn't worship the needles or CHI or Yin / Yang, they just use the mechanisms in our body to treat the deseases. This mechanisms God gave us when he created a Man. It is good to use them.
Cardinal Arinze is THE BEST.I agree with SansAuthoritas.I'm also well aware of the idea of Chi. I'm a practicing Catholic and doctor at the same time. I study acupuncture. It is realy effective. There is nothing satanic in it. If 1000 years ago some tribes worshiped the sun, it doesn't mean that the sun is bad and satanic.
This cardinal seems misinformed about acupuncture. Study after study shows there’s no proof it’s effective. Also, his use of the word "cure” is off base. Even the alternative medicine community is hesitant about using that word.
The Catholic Church does seem to lack specific guidelines about whether or not it accepts acupuncture. However, it does take a stand against new age medicine.
“…the way of many, some, in Asia….” Well, so, that doesn't mean acupuncture is an acceptable practice.
Acupuncture IS NOT allowed at all. Acupunture is related with east civilization and their culture which has nothing to do with God, but their philosophy and believes. Let me just mention that is also a part of New Age movement which is satanic.
There is ONLY One God and there is ONLY One Man God, and that is Jesus Christ - That what Jesus Christ said and this is what all of us should have already known by now.
Silk, Gunpowder, Tea, Sushi, Hondas, Mitsubishis and Toyotas are related to Eastern civilization, too. Are these all things we have to shun in order to be good Catholics?
I think you're going way over the top. There is a physiological effect from acupuncture, and as long as you're not invoking preternatural forces to effect the change, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it! Medical science doesn't always know why something works. It doesn't mean it has its origin in the Dark One.
@SansAuthoritas Please read more about acupuncture and its relation "to the occult system of Taoism often called Yin / Yang".
"Occultists, practitioners, and their victims believe that disease results when the bodys energy flow becomes unbalanced. They insert long, very fine, needles... This, they believe, frees the energy of the universe (the universal FORCES)to flow freely, what they cal CHI, they think thus giving health to the organs and body system. "
@SansAuthoritas Iam gonna clearly state it: acupuncture IS SATANIC as same as new age is. And it doesnt matter whether one believes it or not. IT IS !
You didn't mention tea, silk, gunpowder or tea. I'm well aware of the idea of Chi. It may very well be a fair but incorrect description of a real physical process. They thought children came from your thigh in the Bible. Aristotle thought the brain was merely a radiator, Galen thought the "four humours" caused our moods and sicknesses. Just because people are wrong about things doesn't mean that they aren't trying to describe reality in the best way they know.
I have no problem with Harry Potter for a couple reasons. One, the kids in Harry Potter are BORN with their magic abilities, so it's like a gift from God, it's not like ordinary people performing black magic. Two, in Harry Potter they celebrate the holiday Christmas. Three, Harry Potter has a godfather, so he was baptized. And 4, there's a lot of Christian symbolism in it. I'll admit though, parents should point out to kids that it's just a fantasy and real witchcraft is bad.
@JudeCJV You have no problems, but your kids may have. None of the parents want to have kids possesed by evil spirits. It would be better for you and your children if they stopped have anything to do with witchcraft. It has been said: [ "There is no such group as a good witch or a bad witch. My children, they all are under the rule of satan!" - Our Lady, August 14, 1979 ]
@JudeCJV I agree, it's like Narnia or Lord of the Rings, there are good magicians and bad magicians, but it makes a clear distinction between the two. There is a lot of Christian symbolism, I've read part of a book called "Looking for God in Harry Potter" that so far does a good job explaining the Christian symbolism and making a distinction that it is fantasy just like Narnia or LOTR(which are both very Christian stories).
Thanks navarroportriple! I'm glad to know another Catholic on here agrees with me about that. I once knew a guy that didn't like narnia or lord of the rings which I both love but he was a baptist, didn't realize some catholics felt the same about that until I saw some comments from them on youtube.
"It is good, that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because those are subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly." 3) So there is nothing to think about or find out so as to judge, DON'T GLORIFY WITCHCRAFT!!!!
10 If any one comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into the house or give him any greeting; 11 for he who greets him shares his wicked work.
2)...A white witch taps into the exact same source as a black witch. Familiar spirits (mediums) are the same. It is written to stay away from familiar spirits..ie..those who one recognises...ie.. aunt, uncle ect.
If you could only see WHAT was standing behind the faces of those familiar spirits!!
@sharons813 In Harry Potter, you would know if you've read them, that the good wizards don't "tap into" any kind of source--it is made very clear that the only ones who "tap into" anything are the evil wizards.
harry potter is the glorification of witchcraft. If you do some research also, you will find that the author is aware of the satanic sybolism used in the movie. It is different if the story is of 'good' fighting evil, but evil fighting evil is just the glorification of such. How many kids now think that there is nothing wrong with witchcraft?? Better still, how many parents told their kids that sorcerers will be DENIED access into heaven??!!
