I am sorry for everyone that thinks that windows is better than a unix distro, because not only you can install everything from your desktop (even from console), you can develop anything much easily from a unix like SO, compared to a windows SO. In windows, you have to crack everything, to get free stuff... but not in unix! plus, you have to save at least a dozen of gigas in your hard drive just to install windows... with linux, its just a few hudreds of megabytes, for the basics.

I'm considering dual-booting Ubuntu and Windows 7, making Windows 7 my primary for gaming and Ubuntu a secondary for browsing the internet for *Cough* personal affairs... But 1. I need a CD/DVD I can burn it on, in which I do not have, and 2. It says that I should have a backup file in case something goes wrong, which would require 2, and since my computer didn't come with a Windows 7 CD... Yeah.
Just recently wiped out Winblows 7 64-bit completely. Full install of Ubuntu 10.04. NO VIRUSES!!!! OPEN SOURCE!!!! I mean really, if you're a computer nerd there's no need for me to explain why Ubuntu is superior to Winblows. If you're not a computer nerd, keep living in the dark my friend. I hope that one day you will see the light!

@nanotech2080 whatever OS you use is strictly your preference ... but just to let you know .... in Ubuntu you can install "stuff" right from your desktop , you don't even need to use to use your browser to search for software ..... because Ubuntu has something called "Software Center"

Are you serious? Windows architecture is having problems. Microsoft's days are being numbered! Windows's TCP IP stack comes from BSD, a UNIX Variant. How could any person say Windows is better than any other OS, when NASA uses Linux for its workstations and servers. It is also very customisable in contrast to Windows. Google, IBM, and Amazon use Linux on their servers because of its reliability and performance.

Am using this OS in a dual boot with Win7, and prefer Ubuntu much more. Works great on my laptop as well, detects all hardware, cannot be happier, and reportedly, the security is just as good as with Win7. Great software support, can do just as much with Linux as you can with Windows. And, did I mention that the price is really great?? Nice demo video!

@zer0statusYT FLStudios DOES work if you have Wine installed, and update it with sudo apt-get update. There is a slight sound delay, and may not work well if you don't have a dedicated sound card.

Hey! I downloaded ubuntu 10.04 (first time I've dl'd a Linux OS and it's AWESOME).
*Help* I let Wubi do the installation so that I can use Windows Vista or 10.04 at startup. I notice that while running Vista my laptop's fan is pretty quiet, but when I run Ubuntu 10.04 my fan seems to be running more frequently and louder.
I enabled the 3d cube and skydome through compiz. Even if I'm not constantly looking at it, could this be making my CPU run faster and need more fan cooling? Is this why?
zomgz! Just dl'd ubuntu 10.04 (first time i've ever had ubuntu or any other linux program). It's soooo awesome!!! I have it dual-booted with Vista right now, but oh man it destroys vista. It used to take me a few minutes just to turn on and wait for my wireless connection to be available with windows vista. with ubuntu 10.04, my computer is on with wireless signal connected within seconds. So awesome and it's free!! Ubuntu 4 Life!
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 lts on my two years old vista-laptop... the time i spent with vista was, well, shit. It was slow, 32-bit OS, and my computer's 64-bit! but when i istalled 64-bit ubuntu, the computer was, like, reborn... I have Ubuntu on all of my PC's now, and i won't turn back to Windows, anymore.
@DeeFutura If ya like Ubuntu then you'll love Linux Mint 9 which is based on Ubuntu 10.04 except alot of things work out of the box and its just gorgeous.
@xMandalorex there is no need to wait for 10.10 you can install 10.10 from within the OS like an update and you wont lose any of your files when it comes out :)
@xMandalorex they do ubuntu has a duel release system. a lts like 10.04 has a 3 year cycle. normal releases are every 6 months. basically a huge test run for the next lts.

today for some reason I was in a good mood, so I decided to give Ubuntu a try, you know just to see what was up...guess what, HORRIBLE, just plain HORRIBLE. No driver support, no easy one click installs, no eye candy graphics. Turns out that to install one driver, you require the installation of 10 others, all of which you have to install by inputing sentences of long tedious codes. You can't watch dvds, no music, no games, no nothing.
free is free, and I guess that if you got something for free, than that is what you get, and don't expect much more. If You want the top operating system, the most practical, the easiest to use, the funnest, the best looking I suggest you go with a hefty copy of Windows 7...now i WILL procees to uninstall this shit before it fucks up my beautifull gaming machine.
this version of ubuntu has so many bugs in it , sometimes the touchpad doesnot work , sometimes the panel buttons do not pop down , and after you install the video driver the splash screen goes into lowest resolution.
Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't even install on my machine and my machine aint that old so I give it a big fat 0 out of 10. Ubuntu 8.1 installed and seemed quite nice and would have given it a 6/10 but then it started freezing with its own nvidea 177 & 180 drivers so I will give that a big 0/10 as well. Windows is expensive fatware which I would only rate 4/10 but at least it works with majority hardware.
@demoniccurses9, the ubuntu installer itself freezes (dots will stop moving). Ubuntu has problems dealing with some motherboards with on board graphic chips. Even if I turn off the internal graphic controller in bios and use a pci graphics card, the installer will still freeze. People have complained in Ubuntu newsgroups but there is no fix and has not been since 8.1 which at least installed but then you left with an op that will randomly freeze.

Excuse the ignorance, but is 10.04 or 10.10 better at detecting and working with wireless cards than 8.10? I could not get 8.10 to play nice with my wireless card no matter how hard I tried, and eventually just gave up. I know someone reading this is rolling their eyes at my lack of Linux knowledge, but I can live with that.
I personally say that OS X is my favorite OS. When it comes to value though, Linux is my favorite. Linux runs on any computer and is free. I like Windows for gaming.
Since switching to Ubuntu a while back from windows xp, my life has been Ubunterrific :3 :D WIndows 7 users think themselves better than other OS users because they paid a fortune for a sleek desktop. Ubuntu is better and costs nothing ;)

I've said this before but Micro$hit has absolutely nothing on Linux, I have Linux Mint 9 (which based on Ubuntu 10.04) on my HP G60 laptop and I absolutely love it,! In my opinion it totally brought out the full potential of my system, the shut down and start up was alot quicker. Plus I love the software manager it comes with and compiz effects. Linux 4 life! :)

@zer0statusYT FLStudios DOES work if you have Wine installed, and update it with sudo apt-get update. There is a slight sound delay, and may not work well if you don't have a dedicated sound card.

Hey! I downloaded ubuntu 10.04 (first time I've dl'd a Linux OS and it's AWESOME).
*Help* I let Wubi do the installation so that I can use Windows Vista or 10.04 at startup. I notice that while running Vista my laptop's fan is pretty quiet, but when I run Ubuntu 10.04 my fan seems to be running more frequently and louder.
I enabled the 3d cube and skydome through compiz. Even if I'm not constantly looking at it, could this be making my CPU run faster and need more fan cooling? Is this why?

zomgz! Just dl'd ubuntu 10.04 (first time i've ever had ubuntu or any other linux program). It's soooo awesome!!! I have it dual-booted with Vista right now, but oh man it destroys vista. It used to take me a few minutes just to turn on and wait for my wireless connection to be available with windows vista. with ubuntu 10.04, my computer is on with wireless signal connected within seconds. So awesome and it's free!! Ubuntu 4 Life!

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 lts on my two years old vista-laptop... the time i spent with vista was, well, shit. It was slow, 32-bit OS, and my computer's 64-bit! but when i istalled 64-bit ubuntu, the computer was, like, reborn... I have Ubuntu on all of my PC's now, and i won't turn back to Windows, anymore.

@xMandalorex they do ubuntu has a duel release system. a lts like 10.04 has a 3 year cycle. normal releases are every 6 months. basically a huge test run for the next lts.

today for some reason I was in a good mood, so I decided to give Ubuntu a try, you know just to see what was up...guess what, HORRIBLE, just plain HORRIBLE. No driver support, no easy one click installs, no eye candy graphics. Turns out that to install one driver, you require the installation of 10 others, all of which you have to install by inputing sentences of long tedious codes. You can't watch dvds, no music, no games, no nothing.

If You want the top operating system, the most practical, the easiest to use, the funnest, the best looking I suggest you go with a hefty copy of Windows 7...now i WILL procees to uninstall this shit before it fucks up my beautifull gaming machine.

this version of ubuntu has so many bugs in it , sometimes the touchpad doesnot work , sometimes the panel buttons do not pop down , and after you install the video driver the splash screen goes into lowest resolution.

Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't even install on my machine and my machine aint that old so I give it a big fat 0 out of 10. Ubuntu 8.1 installed and seemed quite nice and would have given it a 6/10 but then it started freezing with its own nvidea 177 & 180 drivers so I will give that a big 0/10 as well. Windows is expensive fatware which I would only rate 4/10 but at least it works with majority hardware.

@demoniccurses9, the ubuntu installer itself freezes (dots will stop moving). Ubuntu has problems dealing with some motherboards with on board graphic chips. Even if I turn off the internal graphic controller in bios and use a pci graphics card, the installer will still freeze. People have complained in Ubuntu newsgroups but there is no fix and has not been since 8.1 which at least installed but then you left with an op that will randomly freeze.

For all the noobs: don't even try getting used to Gnome 2.x (the desktop environment shown here) because it is being phased out.Thats not my opinion, its official ! (its going to be replaced by Gnome-Shell probably late 2010).

Gnome 2.x will be around for a long as you wish, but The focus is entirely on the new Shell.I've been using gnome for a very long time and haven't witnessed any significant improvements over the past year or so.
In other words, you could as well stick to Windows 95.

Excuse the ignorance, but is 10.04 or 10.10 better at detecting and working with wireless cards than 8.10? I could not get 8.10 to play nice with my wireless card no matter how hard I tried, and eventually just gave up. I know someone reading this is rolling their eyes at my lack of Linux knowledge, but I can live with that.

I personally say that OS X is my favorite OS. When it comes to value though, Linux is my favorite. Linux runs on any computer and is free. I like Windows for gaming.

I bought a book named Ubuntu unleashed and it has Ubuntu 8.04 LTS but Im still new to this and install it on my first computer.I bought another PC and install Ubuntu 10.04 on it.If i were to read and study that book.Can i also apply it on here on 110.04 even though it's on 8.04? I've said this before but Micro$hit has absolutely nothing on Linux, I have Linux Mint 9 (which based on Ubuntu 10.04) on my HP G60 laptop and I absolutely love it,! In my opinion it totally brought out the full potential of my system, the shut down and start up was alot quicker. Plus I love the software manager it comes with and compiz effects. Linux 4 life! :)
