  • Hadrians wall was built to keep the legions busy, if your stuck in Scotland where its raining all the time you need to keep busy

  • An I gert ferkered in mer arse hole - AN I really lerked it!

  • 5:17 sieg heil ahah

  • As a Scots, Irish, Viking Mongrel ex Squaddie who's fortunate enough to live right on Hadrians Wall in a house that was built to keep out my ancestors I'd like to say that the local view is that it was the best Tax Scam in the country. As for being frightened of the scots? Serverus kicked their arse all the way to the Highlands then came back coz it was shite! Romans had a great time here. It's a little piece of paradise. People need to chill out and enjoy the View.

    It's lovely! :-)

  • constantine became emperor in 306 NOT 407! other errors were pointed out in previous comments, but who fact checked this awful program?

  • @versteeg32 You don't think it was a slip of the tongue that went missing?

  • @versteeg32

He meant the usurper emperor Constantine III.

  • Adrian build the wall to not be out done by the Chinese, the wild Scots were no match for the Romans.

  • It was the Picts not the Scots who held Roman Advance. Now Nothumberland

  • what that wall for? go see chiana wall man

  • Hadrian WAS a soldier. You have got to be kidding. He fought the Dacians and the Sarmations with Trajan. While he was emperor he would eat and sleep with the legionnares ALL of the time! I know quite a bit about Rome and I think nationalism is distorting Scotland's view of history. Hadrian realized that the empire would collapse quickly if there foreign policy continued to be conquest. Hadrian wanted to have Rome adapt to accomodate other cultures. He did not fear the Scots I gaurantee you that!

  • @TheDavid2222 Nationalism distorts nearly everyone's view of history. Unfortunately.

  • I read "Hadrian's Memoirs" and I assure you that if the Romans really wanted to they could have smashed through Scotland. The proffessional soldiers of Rome had no equals. I hate to squelch you nationalism but a simple change in foreign policy saved Scotland. Hadrian was not at all interested in expanding Rome's territory. I mean he REALLY wasn't interested. I'm not saying Scotland's warriors weren't brave but a little Roman steel would have done the trick, trust me.

  • Bon Scott is still alive

  • Just thought I would point out that its England on the north side of Hadrian's Wall and not Scotland as some here think.

I should know as I lived there for many years.

  • Man there are a lot of people making comments here that do not know anything about the history of Roman Scotland and that goes for Neil Oliver.

Its sad that after nearly 2,000 years some feel the need for this now tired historical spin. History is history, so don't use spin to change it.

Anyone here heard of the Antonine Wall or the battle of Mons Graupius?

I've contacted the History Channel and Neil Oliver in the hope that they can tell me why they made such a poor historical film.

  • @allgreektomeagain ... I had not heard of either and thank you for making this post. I am now educated. I find it absolutely baffling that an archaeologist would spin it as he does. He has no respect for history because he can't be that dumb. The Antonine Wall was 'very' interesting to learn about ... thanks again!

  • Comment removed

  • @allgreektomeagain Yes Antonine Wall was built farther North. An history is written by the winners perhaps what you don't like is a loser on the side of history giving his perspective. However sense there are no more Romans around to tell their side of the story. It is up to others to patch things up. Romans build a wall all across their empire. On there side the Roman Empire on the other side Barbarian lands.

  • @allgreektomeagain Antonine wall wasn't as important as Hadrian's as it was in use only for twenty years, thirtytwo if you count the construction, and the battle of Mons Graupius, whose account has been written by someone (Tacitus) who wasn't even there, is treated in Neil Oliver's work about the Picts.

  • Britannia was just a little tiny outpost for the romans. Not of that much importance.

  • Enjoyed the video thanks

  • Great video!i'll be there in few weeks, it's always useful to know more

  • Thanks for this video!

My novel, No Roads Lead to Rome, takes place in Spain in 123 AD. The story follows two soldiers who are very unhappy to be sent off to England by an inept governer to help build the wall.

I was pleased to hear you mention the Spanish legionaries who were stationed there. My poor soldiers ran into so many misfortunes en route that they didn't quite make it north.

Hope to see the wall some day...this was the next best thing.

    RS Gompertz

  • steel a little your a thief steel allot your a king

  • The wall is 15 feet high? Goddamn that guy must be tall!

  • Hes Scottish, he even says it in the video.

  • what language is it ???

  • His accent's freaking annoying!!! lol

  • @Leleakastrelok Are you fucken serious?

  • The meaning of Greco-roman term became irrelevant

to the Romans who refered to ANYONE Vikings,Normans, Celts ,Goths etc. but particularly to the North African invaders who threatened the Empire big time as BARBARIAN

  • @cmacpar - your knowledge of Roman history is scant. Vikings and Normans did not exist in Roman times but came on the scene much later. The Antonine Wall (not Antonian) was built under orders of the Roman Emporer Antoninus Pius, about 30 years after the building of Hadrian's Wall.

Also, the word Barbarian comes from the Latin word Barba, meaning beard. The Romans regarded beards as the mark of barbarians.

  • The Romans DID occupy parts of Scotland The Antonian Wall was built long before Hadrian`s several miles north However the Briganties and the Picts put manners

on the Romans and eventually after much

breaches of the wall and fighting the Romans moved south and left the "Bararians" to it.Enter Hadrian and the rest is history.

Meaning of "Barbarian" any one outside the Roman Empire who were opposed to them.probably originating from the north africian tribe "The Barbers" Rome`s worst enemy.

  • "Barbarian" comes from the Greek, they used it to describe everyone who didn't speak Greek and who they found a bit strange or funny, originally not always hostile or uncivilised . They just made "bar-bar" sounds. The Romans took it over, "The Barbers" also comes from there.

  • Yeah! The scots are free, we're just letting them think there in charge.

  • stupid accent

  • your stupid

  • Hadrian's Walmart®.

    New open in Britain.

  • Neil Oliver is hhhhhhhhhot! I love you Neil.

  • lets build it back up and keep gordon brown out of england we are sick of scotish rule

  • Independence for Scotland now!

  • No problem mate just please take that fucking clueless moron gordon brown he would run scotland better than alex salmon who is a racist against the english

  • "we are sick of scotish rule"

You'd have to be extremely naive to believe Gordon Brown is the most powerful man in the UK. He's nothing but a Jesuit mouthpiece serving his master in Rome. The most powerful man in the UK is the Jesuit Provinicial--Michael Holman in Mayfair, London. Of ccourse, you aren't supposed to know that.

  • i dont give a fuck who he is, just send gordon brown back to jock land please before he fuck the english over any more !

  • It's not surprising that the UK (Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland) is ruled by an evil foreign power when its full of uneducated, foul-mouthed people like you. Away and wash your filthy mouth out with soap boy. Then, if you are really interested, mail me and ask me nicely and I'll educate you.

  • ok make me feel better and tell me why the english are hated why you would rather be pakistani than english is it cos you watched brave heart ?

  • I never mentioned Pakistani. The English are hated for a lot of reasons, football thugs etc but the main reason the English are "hated" is because of the British Governments policy of interventionalism--constantly meddling in other countries affairs. I realise it's wrong that the finger should be pointed at the English but that's just the way it is. The Government is controlled by the Jesuits of Rome and the Jesuits are using British (and American) military for their own purpose.

  • If you'd like to chat further e-mail me direct as its a bit off topic and I wouldn't want to bore others with something so important!

  • @Islandretreat Britain and America just filled in a power void left after WW2. I would rather have Britain and America in world politics than Russia and China.

Most of Europe would probably be owned by Russia and Asia by the Chinese and the middle east would probably be divided by Russia And China. It's hard to imagine but the only thing that kept Russia from invading Europe was Nato. If it wasn't for Nato, Russia could have had its way with Europe 60 years ago.

  • @konasquareheed Why the hell would aybody want to be English?

That's a much more interesting question.

  • Just so folks know... from 0:14 - 0.16 seconds is where they filmed the scene in ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES where he fights the guy of gisbourne... just a bit trivia for you all!

  • these comments even if they are a joke prove why walls are bad

  • In the time it was used, it was costly, but very effective, it made it possible to use as less resources in militairy sentence to defend a huge scale of land.

Remember that the Scotish and other tribes of the north, in that time, didn't had the engineering to efficiëntly conquer this wall [ while there where romans defending it ofcourse ].

  • Walls are not bad. The idea behind it may be. Walls are mainly an idea themselves.

  • First of all you spelled superior wrong. Second of all the english don't have to send their army into scotland anymore because they already own you as you sold your country for a few lousy golden sovereigns years ago, third why do more scottish people live in England than in scotland, and if by any chance Scotland does become independent it will be completely poor ranking third world just like it's football team.

  • if scotland becomes independant we take our north sea oil with us. then what you gonna do? you would lose all fishing rights and you would lose much needed deep water bases for the nuclear subs

  • nice one..

  • That is just such an English view towards the Scots holding them back! The FACT is that the Roman's tried to invade Scotland several times however, they failed at each attempt. Just like the English did!

Why can't you English just accept that Scotland is the more supperior country in Britain, not for long though as independence is coming! :D

  • @chadstur1991 lol very true especially since the wall is so small, what would ever make them think it can hold anyone back. haha english dopes

  • @chadstur1991 The English didn't exist at that time. Britain was inhabited by Celts, and the Angles and Saxons were on the continent - the parts that weren't conquered by the Romans. But the Romans did push north to the Antonine Wall for a while.

As for independence, many of us in England can't wait to be freed from the burden of subsidising Scotland.

  • @Bhoeble subsidising Scotland?explain???????

  • @chadstur1991 I wouldn't say Scotland is a superior country for many reasons. The UK wouldn't be what it is without Scotland and vice versa. Scotland will certainly gain independence soon, but without England it will just go the same way as Ireland. Without Scotland, England will be at a huge loss. Scotland should be able to govern itself as a state but it isn't broken, misplaced idealism gives rise to independence that serves only to line the pockets of the few, ultimately it's not necessary.

  • @chadstur1991

    I hate trolls

  • @chadstur1991 im an english bloke, and i think its amazing how the scots defended their lands, they truly kick ass, fair play to em ;)

  • What a typical norrowminded jealous point of view. The Roman's did not invade Scotland as they didn't stand a chance. The Scots knew there land too well, were better trained in this type of battle, and most of all Scots are renowned for being one of the bravest/toughest people in the Wolrd.

You English have the worst attitudes, you're rude, you belive you are better than everyone else and so on...

Once again the Scots held off an invasion, England's jealousy just get's better!

  • you are completely right. the english treat scotland like its a province of england. and they arent even english.how many times were they invaded ? normans saxons german royals

  • racist yip yap, from a stereotype! you scots are funny to us, barking like dogs, but tied up outside in the cold..

  • That has more to do with the proximity of England to continental Europe compared to Scotland, which made it more accessible, as well as the former's relatively higher wealth and productivity which attracted invaders.

  • @chadstur1991

eventually they realised there was no point - you couldn't get any tax revenues from a heap of rocks

  • @chadstur1991 wrongggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

  • @chadstur1991 its their not there

  • @chadstur1991 It wasn't Scotland north of the wall, it was the land of the Picts. The Scots were seafarers who lived in the sea channels between Ireland and Britain, and later took over from the Picts. The ancestors of the English were living in on the continent, and were not conquered by the Romans.

  • @chadstur1991 It is pretty ridiculous to assume that the Scots (who incidentally did not exist then but never mind) knew their land better than the tribes in what is today France, Spain, Middle East, North Africa etc etc knew their land. For the Romans it was not worth the bother advancing further in Britain. The tribes they clearly wanted to conquer were in what is today Germany - but they never succeeded.

  • @chadstur1991 Well, of course, at this time there were no 'Scots' or 'English' as such, just various Celtic tribes occupying different regions of the British Isles. To try to project modern nationalisms onto this period is misleading.

  • Neil's a bit of a dreamboat, isn't he? But I hasten to add he's also a bloody good historian. He makes archeological sites very accessable to the lay person. More please!

  • No offfence to Scots (who migrated to Scotland from Ireland after Romans left the island) but Romans don't conquered the Pictish north becouse it was economicly useless and not fit for civilised people to live. I love the scotish accent ;)

  • true, despite what some people belive, the romans knew they couldn expand forever. And didnt wanted to. So the kept what was usefull for them and left the useless territory outside the empire.

  • their own records say they wanted the north and they COULD'NT take it.

  • Aye, rebuild it!!

  • Oh my god. When did those fiends do that? We should do something about that!!

Love my subscription. Thanks for sharing this.

  • Yes Excatly! Fiends! That is what I have been trying to tell everyone! 6 months later you a get a reply to your comment. LoL
