Perhaps nobody complained before. But the fact of the matter is that the California Constitution wasn't explicitly homophobic. That affects and bothers more individuals than the couples that couldn't get married. FOR EXAMPLE: straight people, family members, people who want small government intervention, feminists, members and leaders of religious minorities, interfaith couples, agnostics, interracial couples, budhists. Turned LGBT into LGBTSFMPIMLRMIAICBs, and sped marriage in four states.

If civil unions gave the same rights as marriage then that would be okay but it does not. That is why it is not okay. There are no federal rights afforded to gays in civil unions as well as many state rights.
