Nintendo hasn't put out a quality system since the N64, and even that is a bit of a stretch. If they want the hardcore gaming community to come back, they need to get support of 3rd party developers such as Rockstar, Square (to produce a REAL FF game,) etc.
Im getting a Wii U at launch, but I agree, I was confused because they only confurmed in the specs that is runs 1080, 720p, 420p graphics, and 1080i, 720i, and 480i, whatever that means. But it's probally going to be powerfuler than the next x box & ps3.
When I first watched the press conference I literally could not stop coming up with questions to ask the idiots at Nintendo. To me it seemed like they rushed the console and announced it before any specifications were even completely set in stone. I doubt any of the Nintendo guys up on that stage even knew what the current specs were so far. "Oh we like to keep it simple." Well Nintendo you seem to just be trying to cover your asses because you can't make a final version of the console!
@AnHeretick You even seen the videos of it actually working? It looks absolutely amazing! Go watch the videos and then come to me so you can collect your lottery money.
Time to grab some nintendo stock. If a vunch of dumies not understanding the wii u demonstration caused the stock to drop, then time to buy is now. I think it look slike it will be amazing and very successfull.
I didn't thought that the Wii U presentation was that bad as you stated, but I have to agree with you in a lot of points.
Actually I am very interested at the upcoming Wii U concept because it will be again something quite different, but you are totally right - it was wired that we didn't saw the console, it was wired that we didn't knew someting about its price and especially the hardware would have been something to talk about.
Very nice video Rich, can't wait to see the next one :-)
The console is not too bad, but they showed it so bad at E3. I thought for a second that it was an add-on for the ORIGINAL wii. They should have shown a picture of the console itself. Either way I'm still gonna buy it even if they showed it so badly that it ALMOST ruined my E3 sensation(but it didn't because what they have shown for 3DS rocked and I was relieved it wasn't the console itself)
Nintendo hasnt been in its prime since the n64 died out....it will never be the same as it once was. Nintendo is no longer about making quality games, its about "showing off new gaming technology". This is exactly what caused the Wii to fail in the minds of old school and hardcore gamers and why a bunch of people have jumped ship to ps3 or xbox 360. I will always be a fan of Nintendo, but I know for a fact that Nintendo wont ever be the same as it once was,
@aquateensown id disagree showign new technology isnt bad and they make quality games the ones that are bad are by other developers smg2 ssbb mk wii are really good games they just got flooded with a lot of bad ones due to crappy developers
The problem is although in the beginning the wii seemed very promising with the motion control,it left alot of people with a very bitter taste in their mouth,75% of the games are subpar at best and to top it off the motion control was not very accurate, most of my friends that have a wii haven't touched theirs in over a year, and the ones that do play it just play the first party games. nintendo will need an overhaul in their first party game development.
Of course it was disastrous. It was completely obvious the Wii U wasn't ready to be announced with the half assed information we ended up getting. I don't blame the investors at all because they were as confused as the rest of us.
If u screw up and confuse ppl in revealing ur new console, showing demo reels of the game through other consoles, not revealing the specs to show ur investors that it can run up par w/ the PS3....they have every right to bail nintendo. Ppl have to realize they putting their money to support nintendo and if nintendo continue to lose investors don't expect alot of games from them nor 3rd pties from that console, 3DS, DS, etc. in the future.
Clearly, investors are fucking retarded. I agree that Nintendo could have done a better job with their E3 presentation (most importantly, they should have talked more about the Wii-U system itself) but it doesn't take a genius to understand that it's an actual new system that's actually more powerful than the current generation systems. 5 minutes of googling would have given you that information. I guess investors are smart enough to throw money around but not enough to do their research though.
I think it was a disaster. But for some reason, I'm kinda excited for it. I really want to check it out. I just hate the name though. You can't make "Wii U" sound tough no matter how you try to spin it. Maybe Sexy Coco should give it a go! LOL!
Nintendo think that people don't care about the cpu, gpu, ram etc... Because the Wii was a huge hit, based on motion control, and nothing to do with computing power, Nintendo think people only care about controllers.
I think Nintendo have possibly become too arrogant . Can they rely on the mass-market to go mad about the Wii U? ... Maybe people are happy with 480P and limited power? ... When the U launches... we'll find out if Nintendo have dropped the ball.
I'm glad investors feel that way, I too was stunned at what nintendo unveiled. I'm a big nintendo and I can firmly state, I will not get the Wii U at launch. That means a lot considering I've gotten all of nintendo's systems day one. Wait and see attitude this time around.
Nintendo took a MAJOR misstep with their e3 presentation; it's just about as bad as the infamous 2006 Sony one! You made some excellent points, Rich, though I'm pretty sure that not showing the actual console for more than a couple of seconds was their main problem. Here's hoping Nintendo can recover; they don't have other massive departments, like Sony and Microsoft, to back them up.
I agree their presentation was terrible I, too, would be a tech guy and i was baffled from how nintendo presented it. The details for the system wasnt even there, bad bad showing.
If not for the 3DS i think this would be the beginning of the end for nintendo they better have more news and specs ready before or at CES 2012 and need to get demos or trailers of games running on wii u hardware or this could be the biggest failure for nintendo since the VB or could be even bigger then the VB failure.
Yeah i was confused to. Me and my friend were watching E3 and we were like...ok wtf? so its a new controller for the Wii? then i was told there was a console but they just didnt really show it...they messed up so bad in my opinion.
i completely agree. also did you notice that when they said "here is a tech demo of what our new console can do" they showed a pre-rendered cg clip of a bird... that's not gameplay. that shows me that your console can output a video clip onto a screen
investors also bailed when the wii was announced and look what happened. and they were just teasing the system not showing it off, during the conference they clearly explained why they were only showing the controller. And for those saying they haven't released anything good in the last couple years, you have truly been missing some great video game experiances you cant have on other systems.

@LarryBundyJr I don't think you should be expecting a new M console or S console announcement till 2016 and to be honest I think in terms of gaming graphics it can only go so far and I think in next gen I personally (who knows) think that the graphics won't be as mind blowing as everyone think it might be, at least Wii U is innovative and this video is really just talking about the presentation of the console not how its going to fuck up or anything...least I think it wasn't o__O

Nintendo is running out of ideas. Who knows how long they can keep trying to stay in the ball game with Microsoft and Sony.
I think Nintendo should one or two things. One go make software only and suck it up. The other thing if they want to play with the big boys is start to make other products like HDTV sets and so on.
@mp4podcastDOTcom You write it as if nintendo are any where near being bunked off consoles o__O the wii was the only console to make a profit within the same year of its release and ever since that year of 07 its been profit from then on, and to be fairly honest I don't think the HDTV sets should be a part of nintendo i mean sony is understandable cause they started selling stuff like media sets and t.v's since they started would be odd for N to even start selling T.v's and such.
@mp4podcastDOTcom I would agree with that. Either do what Sega did or step up there game and make a console as powerfull as the next Xbox and the next Playstation.
@edward1432 Apple is doing the same thing with the iPad and Apple TV. Sony is going to link Vita with PS3 and PS4. Nintendo is smart but there are smart people now trying to push the limits of technology now.
not much of this e3 impressed me and i don't think Nintendo did a good job showing off there new console witch they dident show much off. if they were making great games from the begging on the wii's life and not aloud all the shovelwere on it they would not need a new console. plus the name wii u why? why not wii 2 :S
I think they messed up, they should have show how good the system will be not how nice the controller is. The controller is going to be useless on alot of games as well as its too big and the buttons are in the wrong place,
I think I understand why they didn't show off too much. Since the console is in early development and going to be released possibly late next year, I think Nintendo didn't want all of their customer focus to go away from the 3DS while it is still new. They want their consumers to focus on the 3DS while they were able to get a glimpse on what the next system, without knowing too much to wait for it and not invest in a 3DS. That's just what I believe, I could be wrong.
You know those guys at Nintendo, terrible at presenting things, and they have along history of being bad presenters. Remeber the Nintendogs presentation? "Let me show you what they are doing" or something, as weird Iwata leads the hot presenter girl back. That's just the one thing that comes to mind. Honestly though, you'd have to be pretty thick not to realize that the Wii U is a console itself rather than a controller when you consider the fact that the Wii U has 1080p graphics and it does much more than the Wii could ever hope to!
yes nintendo should have made more of a point to show the console itself and they should have announced specs. For now I don't believe the Wii U is going to be leaps and bounds over the PS3's or 360's specs and that's where they're shooting themselves in the foot because a year or 2 from now Sony and Microsoft will have a new system that will outperform the Wii U in every way....the only thing that's really going to keep Nintendo's Market are their 1st party and exclusive titles.
Exactly, if Sony or Microsoft did this at E3 they would get bombarded. But somehow Nintendo get away with it and dumbass blind fanboys are saying Nintendo won :/
Nintendo must have had the most confusing Press Conference in the history of E3. They start showing a controller that is the same color as the Wii and start showing it alongside Wii Remotes which led me initially thinking it was another peripheral. Then they show HD footage making me think maybe the controller is the console but I didn't think that was possible. It wasn't until someone told me about the console image on Kotaku that what Nintendo was showing was the controller.
I didn't watch the entire conference but I was quite impressed with even the concept of the Wii U (the name isn't much to talk about though). I think this is part of what will set Nintendo apart just like the original Wii controller set them apart and all other consoles were trying to catch up with (Ie. Kinect, Move). In that sense Nintendo is always one step ahead. To doubt them is ignorant of their legacy of pushing winners (minding a few fails ala Virtual Boy).
Nintendo, Nintendo, Nintendo... Why must you fail so badly. They're not a completely terrible company but recently they haven't been thinking things through very clearly. I can't blame those investors.
I don't know if it was disastrous, but I think they did totally misrepresent what the Wii U actually was by just focusing on the controller. The Tablet/Controller thing seems like it is actually part of the system and I'm pretty sure you don't even need it to play some of the games. It seems like all the old Wii Remotes and accessories will work on it just fine.
I agree with you 100% I love the nintendo and when I first saw I was like "so the console is the controller that is awesome!" then I saw the little bok right next to the tv and I was like "so it's just a controller for the wii!?" then I saw the graphics and I knew that it was a new consome but still that is just stupid how can you do something like that and on top of that there were many games they didn't talk about for the wii like mario party 9 and a new kirby game so WTF
Im really confused why some people were mad about the trailers. If memory serves me right I believe he said that only one game is in development and that was lego city. Im just saying if he said only one game is in development what would make people think that those other games were from the wii u?
@wedotech lool doubt it. im not getting it when it comes out, because in the back of my mind id be thinking about the next Xbox and Playstation, that would probably come out 2- 3 years later and be waaay better than the WiiU.
I agree with your points in this vid Rich. Only difference was that i gave nintendo the crown. it was a tough battle between sony and nintendo in my opinion. But wii u console gave nintendo a slight edge even though the announcement was half-ass. both conferences could've been way better.
I first thought it was a Wii with a new controller, then they showed footage of BF3 and was like WTF! Was watching with like 5 friends and they all were as confused as me.
Nintendo hasn't put out a quality system since the N64, and even that is a bit of a stretch. If they want the hardcore gaming community to come back, they need to get support of 3rd party developers such as Rockstar, Square (to produce a REAL FF game,) etc.
