  • I am a mac User. I use Wine to run ptool3.exe. But can't read GF1__122.bin.

Have a hacked firmware download for mac user?

  • The GF1 is now hackable in all serial ranges!

    I just hacked mine! :)

  • @forwardtwo Vitaliy is a Genius! Next stop GH23!

  • Is there any way to slow the shutter speed while recording even more ?? I would love to do a smooth, ghosting video at night...

  • Hi, I have a question. as for menu related, which Do I have to check, manual movie mode or multi exposure menu or Both of them? thanks

  • is the new GF2 allows full manual video shooting?

or does it need to be "hacked"?

currently im looking for 4/3 cam that allows manual movie mode :)

    thanks

  • @magnasylum No the new GF2 will not have full manual controls in video. You need a hacked GF1 or a GH1 or GH2 to do that. Your best bet is a GH2 as the hackable GF1s are hard to find now. I will be selling mine in January though.

  • @mpgxsvcd hi! i just bought a GF1 (i just like the lens that came with it better)...how do i know if it's hackable or not? hope you can help...

  • @reevrob I have a serial no. XXXX.... Will the Hack work ?

    a) If you have a serial such as a XX9XX.... i.e. 3rd letter is 9. It will work. Otherwise, the following combinations will work. XX0A.... , XX0B.... , XX0C... , XX0D.... , XX0E ....

XX0F MAY work - but its not worth buying in this range.

The serial number is on the label at the bottom of the camera.

  • @mpgxsvcd

Hmmmm. My serial is XX0GC...... have you heard if the hack will work on that range?

  • Do you know if the gh2 will have manual controls for video mode?

  • @king072286 Yes the GH2 will offer full manual controls over video just like the GH1 and my hacked GF1. My GH2 should arrive next week so look for a full review of it.

  • I hacked my GF1 and in Mjpeg it is shooting 1440x1080, I cannot figure how to get it to 1920x1080. Can anyone help?

  • @lukeInf86 You should not change the resolution with the GF1. It is only capable of doing 720p. Changing the resolution doesn't really improve the quality. Just up the bit rate and stick with 720p. That is actually really good and better than most camcorder's 1080i.

  • Thanks for all your help - I uploaded a video of testing my hacked GF1! Check it out on my channel!

  • Do you know if live HDMI out preview is already working on the GF1? I love your videos.

  • @drpaulo If you are referring to being able to record videos and watch them on an external display as you record then the answer is no. Unfortunately, they have had trouble implementing that feature so far. It would be excellent to have though. Maybe the GH2 will have that.

  • @mpgxsvcd thanks for the feedback. i have heard you can have a brief preview pressing the trashcan icon for a few seconds... I haven't tried it thou...

yesterday i played with a sony alpha and saw this live preview feature. it would be really good for the type of recording I do...

  • I noticed P-Tool has two separate check boxes for manual mode. One is under Patches for end user/Movie related restrictions/Manual Movie Modes........The other is under Patches For Testers/Middle Level Research/Menu related/FHD Mode.

The first option works but if I use the latter like in the video, it does not give me the menu option to enable full-manual mode.

  • @fraustosound Actually the latest Ptool has the manual movie mode option under user/Movie related restrictions like you stated. However, the option under Testers/Middle Level Research/Menu related/FHD is for enabling 1080p AVC-HD on a GF1. Also known as FHD. It is still in the experimental stage but it does work if you select the correct shutter speed.

  • @mpgxsvcd Ahh, I see. What confused me is that both the manual movie setting and the FHD setting have the same description in the side box.....at least on the version of P-Tool I'm using (3.40d). On a side not, I noticed you have your AVCHD GOP setting at 6, how is that working for you? I have mine at 7 and everything appears to be ok.

  • @fraustosound Yea I don't think Vitaliy puts specific descriptions on the Research options. GOP = 6 has been working great for me. I still prefer 720p MJPEG to 720p AVC-HD though.

  • Wonderfull!

Now you have a full control with lens.

    I don't if to buy a GH1 or wait Photokina with it's new GH2.

  • Wonderfull!

I don't know if to buy GH1 now, or to wait Photokina with it's new GH2.

  • @clabart I would wait for the GH2. Panasonic knows that they have to at least equal the GH13 with camera. If it turns out that the GH2 is not that great then you can always buy a used GH1 for dirt cheap.

  • One more thing, I tested it using these settings listed in this thread:

"GH1 and GF1 firmware hack for dummies" (Won't let me post link)

I'm getting bitrates of 60-70mb/s, how do I know if this is safe on an Extreme III Class 6? Are there possibilities of malfunction/overheating? Are there any tests I should run?

    Thanks for all your help!

  • @JSoriano23 If you are afraid of damaging the camera then the hack is probably not for you right now. That is not to say that it isn't stable. It actually works perfectly in my camera. However, you can do things to mess up the settings if you are not careful about what you are doing.

  • Thanks, I'll try it on my Extreme 3 Class 6, it says on Amazon that they're minimum 20 mb/s.. I'll try the hack, doing comparison samples with my turtle tank. What's the difference between framerate and bitrate?

  • Also, how much of an improvement is this hack compared to stock? What does 'increased bitrate' do exactly?

  • @JSoriano23 The hack improves the original footage greatly. However, uploading it to youtube will nullify that benefit because they just recompress it again. The manual video controls are extremely beneficial though.

  • Is it absolutely necessary to have a class 10 memory card? I have a Sandisk Extreme 3 class 6, will that suffice?

  • @JSoriano23 You just have to make sure your memory card can write faster than the bit rate of the file you are trying to record. A cass 6 card is gauranteed to write at 6 MB/sec. However, cards like the SD 3 Extreme typically can write much faster than that. I use a transcend Class 6 card and I have been able to write as high as 15 MB/sec.

  • I can't seem to find the manual controls in the settings after loading the firmware. Can you get manual controls for mjpeg and avchd? Please help . I followed your tutorial and used your settings.

  • @mchltarr If you have applied the firmware patch completely then you should see an option for "Exposure Mode" in the movie functions menu. It will appear in that menu for both AVC-HD and MJPEG. Visit the links in the description to find additional help on updating the firmware.

  • @eelkenet The filename should have an extension of .bin and not .BIN. Copy the name(exactly) in between the quotes below and paste it in as the filename. I just tested the name below and it works.

    "GF1__126.bin"

  • @mpgxsvcd I don't know what fixed it - your filename or me redownloading the app, but it works :) Thank you!

  • @eelkenet No problem. Glad I could help. What manual mode do you find to be the best?

  • @mpgxsvcd So far I like the S-program a lot, did some tests with a desk fan. Because of the speed differences you get those interference effects where the blades almost stand still. I am currently uploading a clip I made, but due to filesize it's going to take about 1,5 hours ;), once it's done I'll link to it.

Also will try out the aperture priority and full on manual later today or tomorrow.

  • @eelkenet That is a great idea. I didn't think about filming a fan. Definitely, post a link to it here. Or you can just respond and select the attach video link. I will accept it as soon as you do.

  • @mpgxsvcd Also really like fixing the ISO on 100. Such low noise levels, amazing! Now I really want that Noktor HyperPrime 50mm f/0.95 :)

  • Thanks for posting. It's hard to get a sense of how adjusting the shutter speed is changing the video though besides the exposure. It would be helpful to me if you posted a video with some fast motion (like a moving car?) while adjusting shutter speeds to demonstrate the difference in blurring. Thanks.

  • @marauder3c I didn't really have a fast moving subject to shoot since it was late last night when I installed the new firmware. I will try to do some pre-hack post-hack comparison videos tonight,
