I despise the term 'shoegazer'.It was just a crap word invented by some non-musician from the UK music media.I'm Australian & most of us had never heard that word until the internet became part of mainsteam life and had never associated anything like the meaning of that word to amazing groups like RIDE or MBV.Just because they don't run up and down huge stages like S.Tyler or feel they have to perform like cliche rock stars. How can you be a RIDE fan and still refer to them as shoegazers?
@HeavySabre70 It's not a term meant to diss the band. Shoegaze bands are called shoegaze bands because they're constantly looking down at the many guitar pedals they have to operate.
I went to this gig as well. It was on a Friday night, and I went after school with my sister. I was 16. It was so exciting. There were daffodils all over the stage. And it was SO loud. I remember John Peel the following week talking about this gig saying that the band had to get up really early that morning to go to the flower market to buy all the flowers, but that soon they'd be so big that they'd be able to get people to go there and buy them for them!
No this wasn't the 'Like a Snowflake' show. Same venue but about a year or two before. And all of the daffodils were thrown into the crowd about 3 mins before they came on stage - and then thrown back. They were great days at ULU... but was anyone at the Pale Saints show a few weeks before when Ride were the surprise support? I think the Boo Radleys might have played that night as well...
I was there at the Pale Saints show at the ULU (on Thursday 8 March 1990). Ride were the secret support. I remember being stood behind a load of Japanese girls, and at the end of the show Mark Gardener saying "see you tomorrow" cuz they were doing a headline show the next day at the Quad at the LSE. I can't remember about The Boo Radleys though. Oh, and I bought the poster for the show from the t-shirt stall (but sold it on eBay a few years ago!)
The support at the Pale Saints show was The Real People. Ride came on first, the RP, then Pale Saints. The Like a Snowflake show was much later, December '91 and was a fan club only gig. I remember the daffs at this gig tho' - they were everywhere...they tied in with their EP cover that had just been released. The follow up ep had penguins on, strange they never did a gig to support that one!
I was there too! This was such a great time for music and ULU was a great venue to see bands like Ride, Lush, Slowdive etc....This brings back a lot of happy memories :)
Does anyone know if this was there fan-club gig? I went to a gig in ulu around that time to see them? was the worst ferry crossing of my life... across the Irish Sea!
I was there! And Aylesbury Civic Centre the following day, then Salisbury Arts Centre. We did Brighton Zap club, Bristol Bierkeller, Windsor Old Trout, Bournemouth Academy, Birmingham Irish Centre. Oxford, I think that was the town hall. Happy days!
OMG, i carnt believe i missed out on this, from 1987- 1996, i wasnt even born for most of it but i listen 2 it now and just wish i cud of been 2 see bands like these as well as the stone roses, oasis the smiths etc, when you see bands these days there all shit emo/indie bands, this is fukin amazing, many thanks
wow can't believe I can see this again - amazing! I've doubled in age since then ;) I have a couple of great early gigs but they are on video and I am in China without a video to play them on. accidentally spent 5 years here. have to write my own songs as no music scene outside of Beijing as far as I can see...
This was the coolest band in the world in their heyday.

@HeavySabre70 Well said, no worse than the term Britpop or use of the word Punk to describe bands post '78

Ah, Andy Bell, The Kurt Ralske years :->
Think I saw them in Sheffield in 1990. Remember thinking how good the Querault and Colbert rhythm section was.
And they missed their cue on Seagull that night too!

If this song were released in 1969, just when mankind reaches the moon floor, another story would be telling now... Ride's best song ever.

Glad Loz is still playing. J&MC always lacked a decent drummer after Bobby left

Why this was never a single, I don't know. My favorite Ride song, and one of my favorite "Shoe Gaze" songs of all time. Just classic.
