I used to have one of these. I wanted a nasty fuzz box. I spotted it in a guitar shop back in 1997. It looked so cool and HQ, so I bought it. It was rather expensive. I liked it and was just getting used to it when it got stolen along with a bunch of my other gear. It's so fat and nasty. I have the Little Big Muff now which isn't bad, but I really miss this one. It gets sounds other fuzz boxes can't. Cool to see it's gained so much prominence. :)
Borrowing this pedal from a friend who plays bass. This pedal sounds fantastic on bass, I mean REALLY good. But on guitar, I don't know, just couldn't find the sweet spot. Always sounded a bit fizzy.
@LedSatriani I figure that since a pickle is bitter, sour, yet delectable in the same way a great fuzz is - it spits, it's vulgar at times, nasty and bitter yet undeniably irresistible in every way; and since this pedal can do all that and also be unapologetically massive, that makes it a "swollen pickle"
@LedSatriani its in basic form, a big muff clone, and big muff is a pretty dirty sounding name, so they went for the same, instead of big, they said swollen, instead of muff, they said pickle
My dad's got an onboard circuit in his '67 tele that sounds a lot like this. Especially around 2:10 forward. I'd love to tear it apart one of these days and see exactly what it is. He got some random guy to build it for him decades ago
I like the Swollen Pickle more. The Fuzz Factory was decent but it created a horrible hiss on any amp I played it on. And as soon as I stopped, there was an awful squeal. I tried with multiple guitars and multiple amps and couldn't get it to stop. It's just a very noisy pedal, and it detracted from the tone.
yes, it's based on the BMP. if you turn down the scoop and crunch knobs you get classic BMP sounds. way huge are known for having very high quality standards, and in terms of reliability it's better than a BMP reissue (if you've popped the hood on one you know the wires are pretty flimsy and break easily). as far as sound goes... well that's entirely a matter of taste. but the swollen pickle has 4 more knobs (scoop and crunch, plus 2 more on the inside) so it offers more versatility...
correct me if im wrong, but this is more of a take on the origonal swollen pickle, which was a boutique fuzz pedal made in the 90s. this is more than a muff, u can get gut wrenching fuzz face like tones out off it 2. theres also 2 more interior knobs that control the sweep or range of the exterior knobs, giving nearly infinite tones, from vox tone bender to EH big muff pi. ofcourse tone is only a personal preference.

Great fuzz box, but what drove them to name it Swollen Pickle? What glue were they sniffing?

For some reason, this pedal has a huge bottom end, but it still sounds fizzy to my ears.

Is this kind of like a big muff clone? It kind of sounds like it, I'm thinking of purchasing it, is it better than the muff, or what?
