  • You say potato I say potAHHHHto

  • it is not Gahhh nome. the G is silent. please try to use proper English.....

  • can you help me in installing gta sa in linux using wine.while opening it shows me non-executable file.pls help hating linux

  • @esquireequips I do not have that game.... you will need to go to the winehq website for instructions on getting it to work... if it does not work, you will need to dual boot to run the game.

  • I can not get HALO to run in wine. can you get it to run?

  • @Tallman67122 I do not have a copy of Halo... try WineHQ and see if anyone has been able to get it working.

  • @Tallman67122 Hello! I happen to play Halo (ce) regularly.

There are two ways to install it.

    1. You can use PlayonLinux to install Halo

    or

    2. You can install it in Windows first then copy the folder over to Linux.

    Both methods worked for me.

  • @VvWARPIGvV Thanks for sharing that TIP!

  • do I need windows as a second OS for my computer to run WINE? Or can I just runt linux and use WINE?

  • @NiclasTimle89 You do not need Windows as a second OS. Wine is a compatibility layer which will run some of your windows games and apps... You should consider dual booting if you rely on a lot of windows applications and games.

  • @LinuxSpatry oki, thx for fast answer :). gonna install linux right away, hate windows : /. and I wanna support something that free :)

  • Thanks for doing these vids. I'm trying to get vineyard insalled and having no luck. I've tried following the info on vineyards download page, also your show notes. I keep getting messages that it can't find the index files and ends with this.

E: Unable to locate package vineyard

Any ideas on how I might get this working? I'm uisng Ubuntu and new to linux but I have a few windows programs I would really like to run. Thanks!

  • @HomesteadAcres you may want to try again later... the server may be down... I have run into that before...

  • @LinuxSpatry Thanks I'll try again later tonight. I was wondering have you tried the app PlayOnLinux ? How does it compair to vineyard?

  • @HomesteadAcres I personally like Vineyard better. I have had a higher success rate with getting my Windows applications running...

  • @HomesteadAcres If you have Ubuntu Oneiric then most likely your ppa in software sources is pointing to oneiric folder which not exist, just change it to natty...

  • I am planning to chance to Linux. I have windows 7 ultimate in my computer also to install some applications how ever I don't know where to begin, a least look I can install mw2 mw3 and black ops in my computer, nice video tutorial... what kind linux you think will be working is good for my laptop.

  • @3treU Something to keep in mind is that WINE will NOT run ALL of your favorite apps and games. I recommend Pinguy OS 11.04 of you are considering Linux as an alternative. IT has most of the applications you will ever need and it is relatively easy to use. Additionally, I have a whole series dedicated to it. It comes with the Vineyard Wineloader which will help you get a lot of your windows programs running. I also suggest dual booting. You can then choose which operating system to run.

  • I will be take it in mind :P

  • does it work on kubuntu?. I installed the ppa and doesnt show up in the package search. And doesnt install in the terminal either.

  • @Muldz If you added the PPA then your update manager will deliver the updated version to your system when you perform an update. If you open a terminal and type wine --version it should show you that you are running wine-1.3.37.

  • @LinuxSpatry wine is installed sorry i meant Vineyard doesnt install

  • @Muldz which OS are you using?

  • @LinuxSpatry kubuntu 11.10

  • @Muldz Please see show notes above... I am adding the terminal commands you need to issue...

  • u forgot to tell to to install vineyard

    and thank :)

  • @nguyencaotran Please see show notes... I know I included the information you need and I am pretty sure I have covered this in another tutorial on my playlist... "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cybolic/vineyard-testing" then "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install vineyard"

  • would you be able to run battlefield 3 through this

  • Probably not at this time. WineHQ has given this a low score.

  • Great stuff! Thanks and Merry Christmas to ya!

  • i installed the vineyard ppa from spatry on ubuntu 11.10 with a simple trick i change the name from oneiric main to natty main in the source list. Workes fine for me.

  • @JoFri24 Now that is thinking outside of the BOX! I am going to add this to the Show Notes! Why didn't I think of that???

  • @JoFri24 Good tips!

  • @JoFri24 That was a big help. Thank you!

  • Ohh Hot diggity!

  • Great video.

I got neverwinter nights to work.

    I Installed it in playonlinux.

Use wine version 1.23 and patch the game to v1.69.

I used playonlinux for that too by the way.

Oh, and I found the correct patch on softpedia.

  • Sorry if this question not related with the video, but i wanna know what is the differences between one kernel and another? Because i want to know what is the main function of the kernel..

  • @rayyanputra The kernel is your file system setup and all the drivers for your pc's hardware and devices.

That is why you should keep it kernel up to date.

At least if you use the latest and greatest phones and mp4 players or what not.

  • @blackoutworm Thank you bro..=)

  • @rayyanputra kernel is basically the core of the operating system. it contains all of the drivers that powers your peripherals and is a framework which will allow you to run system utilities and programs on top of it. In short it allows software to communicate with your hardware.

  • @LinuxSpatry Thank you for this answer..

  • gr8 video man.

  • You have spent a lot and i mean a damn lot of your time to make this tutorial video..thank you Mr.Spatry!

  • If your have issues running steam just turn off compiz and it will run fine. Same with a few other games I've tried in the past. I was playing FlatOut 2 earlier, installed and played 1st time and as smooth as anything considering what an insanely fast racer it is!

  • @fatriff or you can undirect fullscreen windows.

  • And this is better than Playonlinux because?

  • @fatriff I have had better results with Vineyard and employing the methods shown. Additionally I am having a higher success rate of running my Windows games natively using the latest Wine and Vinyard. I have about 80% of my favorite windows games running which is great compared to a few months ago where I could get hardly any of them to run satisfactorily.

  • @akelith Glad you liked this... I may revisit this topic again after WINE matures some more =)

  • sorry but your ppa of vineyard dont work in ubuntu 11.10.... cant install it with synaptic :-(

  • @JoFri24 You will need to go to the Project's website and download the source and compile it for your system or wait till Vinyard project releases a version for Ubuntu 11.10

  • Hey dude

So say I have a CD or a DVD

How do I get wine to play from it??

and say it has multiple CD's or DVD"s??

For example I have madden 2008 on a 1 DVD

do I just go into the file manager??

or do I mount it with terminal??

    What do I Do?

  • @jaymitra95 Games with multiple disks may give you an option to do a full install. When you insert your disk just run the setup program and vinyard will intercept it and ask you which WINE configuration you wish to install it to.

  • Spatry... I'll say it once and I'll say it again... you're the best Linux tutor ever.... Thank you so very much for taking your time to share this knowledge with others... even though you're working extra hours..... you're a hero my friend!!!!!

  • @LudwigSpiegel thanks.... Once i get the rest of my queue done I am going to take a week off So I can build some new computers

  • Wonder if you could get a game like Skyrim to run on Ubuntu or such, now that I'd like to see.

  • @Live4TheGame1 check WineHQ

  • @Live4TheGame1 It has been done.watch?v=XOxJG9VCHSY

  • PS - Wow! all the stuff ya need to add - is probably why my "Command & Conquer Red Alert 3" didnt run right last time using PlayOnLinux alone. Mainly want to play my C&C Red Alert 2. Love this tutorial - even if I screw it up, its a learning experience. THANKS MAN! I appreciate the tutorials * High Five*

  • @ImTheDaveman YEA! if you wanna run Windows games you need to install all of the dependencies they require... naturally your game DISK does not come with these installers as those are components that usually come with windows...

  • In Zorin 5 - Its not showing Vinyard in the synaptics package manager. I installed the latest PPA going to the official website. .Net 3 does install - it has to have 2.0 installed first - THEN - wait and install 3. It did the same thing to me with 2, then closed the windows - hit install 3 and it worked.

Anywho - I am still following along at this minute - slow go. Some stuff isn't showing the same as yours so I'm guessing my way through. LOL. Manually downloaded Wine and Vineyard via terminal.

  • @ImTheDaveman Make sure whatever Zorin you're running isn't based on Ubuntu 11.10. That will explain why it's not showing as it was built for Natty Narwhal.

  • @SC2Phan - Natty Narwhal? As long as it wasnt for Andy Worhal - sorry, bad joke (i think?) - Im still new to Linux and still learning as I go. A lot if its still like Latin to me. I feel like a first grader thrown straight out of elementary school into a College. I skipped Preschool because the teachers are scared of a 50+ year old man sitting in a small desk chewing on crayons. :-)

  • @ImTheDaveman I know I go a little fast... I always encourage people to press the pause button... I will note that I have a good success rate in getting most of my games to run employing this method YAY!

  • I noticed when I tried to install vineyard that it appears the latest it was built for is Natty Narwhal rather than 11.10 Oneiric. Do you know where any debs built for 11.10 may be located or would we have to build it from source?

  • @SC2Phan you may have to visit the Vineyard Project website for further instruction there...

  • @SC2Phan there is now a link to the vinyard project in the show notes

  • First :)
