  • I watched it and got the same feeling I did watching The Mummy; That they spent too long working on it and forgot to look at real sand. Its good, I can see how its done, its clever but I really believe they could have done a better job. Grains of sand are not dull rocks but shiny, fractured silica that glint and change in the light. This looks flat and dead. Don't flame me, go look at sand, not 'dirt'! :o)

  • they used maya lolz

  • 3:20, Just go to the beach....

  • I love that scene

  • I think that the special effects of SM3 are out of this world! No one did this before, and I'm sure that it has influenced the evolution of VFX!

  • Easily depicted as one of the most emotional scenes in media history. And coming from an effects absesor like me, thats saying something.

10 out of 10 in my book.

  • One thing I can say, it is rare today to have a scene like Sandman's birth in SM3 that has ZERO talking, almost ALL CGI, and just subtle music and some sounds and it make you feel emotions. In this case, it was kinda sad to me, like when he tried to pick up the ring and it went through his hand, and you could see what he felt, even though his face was just sand.

  • Wow, the floor was just a displaced plane!!! I want to do that now!

  • @danielodors Yeah, I noticed that too. I think I might give it a try. Gonna have to get Thinking Particles for 3DS Max 2009 first :D

  • oh my god... stop saying how you can't do it. You could do it in Blender (which is free).

  • @TheFXGuy they jus like to whine about it i guess........ i gotta say, this is nothing comparing to the matrix dock battle scene & hell optimus in transformers 1 was much more visually stunning and appealing!

  • too long meseages.... i dont whant to read.... so read this!!!:

but they cant spend to much time with the story of 1 villian, cuz they have a whole movie to do, and a deadline to do it in..2 hours.......if they spend to much time with the story of sand man, then they couldnt tell the rest, like venom, more about spider-man and his dark side, the peter/mj relationship, and harry becoming the new goblin. so much stuff happened in the movie, with a record setting budget, and 3 hours to do it all

  • 1:43 lol

  • Sandman birth is so weird and not so detailed they make it so quick.....

  • What do you mean? It took them months to make that scene, and its probably the best part of the entire movie.

  • maybe....but they should make the birth more detailed....not by simple incident test made by few scientist....i know is a movie and have to fast foward it...but even my 10 y.old sister also know that form from human into sandman is so ridiculous~

  • So getting bit by a radioactive spider leading to someone being ablie to shoot web silk out of their wrists is plausible? Remember what you are watching. A superhero movie. Why are you anyalyzing a superhero movie? A movie is meant to take you away from reality to show you things that would probably never happen in real life while bringing along some reality aspects with it. If its ridiculous to you then thats fine, I'm not trying to change your point of view.

  • yeah is a gateway of imagination....that a MOVIE~ but i hate the part~ most the part they change a lot during the birth of sandman...there's to different between comics and movies...in the comics..the birth more detailed instead of this step...i know is a movie..we need fast foward like i said on previous post...but it just not detailed enough!!!

  • If Venom was not present in the movie then there would be enugh time to give more detail. Buuuuuuuuuut since constant e-mails and fans begging for him to be in the movie it he gets like 30 minutes of screen time, more than enough time to give plenty of detail. Since that didn't happen, you take what you can get and move on. This movie was mediocre, the only redeeming factor for me is this scene, and this scene alone. No dialogue, no stupid jokes, just beautiful CG. Its Sad really..

  • look, its still not so symple, like they said in the video. they had to create sandman based on computerised animation, and animation is a tricky thing. a villian thats made out of sand. the trick her is getting him to be able to shapsift into sand, so he can oozz under a door, (so to speek), then make his self so rock hard that he can smash over a wall, and he also has to look like he can beat up spider-man. its probally not so easy to do. you try making a uman made out of sand.

  • I know!! but i care more about the storyline based how sandman born!! not the special effects stuff!! geezz!! why people most care about special effect then storyline!!!

they surpose make the storyline of the born more detailed and fit with the charachter....like the born of spiderman and dr.octopus

  • well, i care about both, but the special effects more, cuz thats what makes it look really cool. like, that last fight scean, when sandman turns into a giant. awsem. i wish i new how they did that. cant ya agree that they did a great job making it look as awsem as possible.

  • besides, the birth of doc ock wasent an instant accident. infact, from the demenstration, to the hostbittle scean, was the birth of dock ock, cuz he passed out after the demenstration, and he woke up in the hostibitle. the sandman, was the same as the green goblin. a nearly instant accident.

  • also, they tell the story of the sandman throuout the cours of the movie. i mean, in general, there's not really that much to tell about the story about how he was born. the big story is, what his regular life backstory is. that's the most important thing, and they tell that perfictally. he was a small time criminal man, who accedintally became the sand manb, when he got atimized. not much story to tell there, don't ya think.

  • did i said green goblin is good introduction?? dr.oc is the best born yet..the storyline and detailed or reason why he become evil is to good...is ok if it instant...the storyline needed to make contact between charachter and we as the one watching it....

  • but they cant spend to much time with the story of 1 villian, cuz they have a whole movie to do, and a deadline to do it in..2 hours.......if they spend to much time with the story of sand man, then they couldnt tell the rest, like venom, more about spider-man and his dark side, the peter/mj relationship, and harry becoming the new goblin. so much stuff happened in the movie, with a record setting budget, and 3 hours to do it all in. they cant spend to much time on 1 plot of the story.........

  • i told u !! instant is o.k but detailed and concept why and how need more.....they can take about 15min to the born of sandman and remove some s2pid part in spiderman 3....

that why spiderman 3 drops below then other spiderman movies....some of s2pid scene been put on..the good one? removed!

  • un beleivable special effects wow

  • always amazes me how they on up everything, to me as a maya user I would just use goal shapes and supplement it with many different scripts to create a sand man of my own, but I know it will never be like this

  • my dear coz thats teamwork its always hard for one to do that

  • I haven't watched any spiderman in a year cause dad don't like it

but it is still brilliant in the sense of what they did to get what they want

It is such a pity the story ruined it all

All that effort ruined by the story line

  • crysis map editor

  • ass kicking special effect!!! 5/5

  • they used software called sidefx houdini and MAXON boddypaint 3d, i think there might be more

  • Next Limit's Realflow was also used for Sandman

  • This movie is the best effects i have seen!

  • u can see CELL from DBZ in 2:18

  • That's one kick ass Effects!

  • which program do they use? Please tell me

  • i belive it is maya with some custom scripting

  • No, it's Houdini.

  • lol one of my lecturers loves using Houdini, he's actually going to set someone up with a job if they learn it. But yeah, I love this scene in Spiderman 3!

  • "I think birth of sandman is going to be one of the most amazing scenes in film history"

    Man, he got that right!

  • what I really wonder is for how long in that scene is the actor actually there..from what point does it become him covered in sand

  • i concur.....

  • finnaly 3d graphics... i make those

  • quite a cool making of.... iwish sandman was the only"villian" in spiderman 3 though.

  • spiderman is quite good movie about fx, but its plot was whacky. cmon, first its a meteorite hiting groung nearby sm, then that prisoner who somehow falls in somehow opened and uncontrolled experiment area, then bock is in the church where parker gets rid of black vial... and what happened to that doughter of householder? she felt in love...

  • what are you talking about? The Sandman creation wasn't wacky at all and Venom has a huge backstory to it, it deserves its own movie! Then when Spidey tries to get rid of the suit it falls onto Eddie Brock. It all fit together. I thought the movie was great but I would've liked to see more of Venom.

  • The special effects in Spider-Man 3 may be the best I have ever seen. Sure, Pirates had great effects, but there were points in SM3 where there were effects and I didn't even realize it. Usually I can identify effects, and I am often "taken out of the movie." But with SM3, for the first time, I really didn't actually notice the effects, even though I knew they were there. Amazing job!

Sandman is the best CGI character I have ever seen. (Davy Jones is the second, and King Kong is third)

  • actually i agree with you dat SM3 had great special effects but i think that Tranformers was probably the best special effects movie

  • Eh... I thought the Transformers had good Special Effects, but at times, they looked downright cartooney... A little too plastic-like and a little too animated in some scenes...

  • a little too plastic? you mean like the toys that transformers are made of??

  • No, I mean the lighting of the CGI models gave the Transformers an unnatural "sheen" to them that doesn't exist in real life. It made them look a little fake. But I will say, looking back now, I kinda wish Transformers had won the Acadamy Award for best visual effects. Sure, I would have liked Spidey 3 to win, but it wasn't even nominated, and watching the Transformers DVD made me realize just how much work was put into them. I still say they don't quite look real, but they look real enough.

  • man the lighting in transformers was amazing, whats this unnatural sheen you speak of? with all the self reflections, lens flares, environmental reflections and so on...it looked pretty much perfect.

  • Transformers had awesome effects so did Spidey 3. And like kevinofark said, what unnatural sheen are you talking about? I own Transformers in HD DVD and I've watched it multiple times and it still amazes me and I have never seen that unnatural "sheen" you're talking about.

  • I am just saying that the lighting with CG still isn't perfect. Sometimes there is too much "sheen" or "glare" off of the surface of the robots (all the white highlights that is supposed to be sun or light reflecting), but still, "Transformers" deffinitly deserved the oscar for Best Visual Effects. I'm just saying CG still has a ways to come before being totally convincing, but "Transformers" (and the Birth of Sandman scene) has basically come as close as possible to seamless special effects.

  • sure, i agree with you that sandman was very cool, but the best?!! Wht about the T-1000?!

  • That looked a little cartoony too, but I would admit it looked pretty real. The sandman didn't look completly good, but it was pretty real. The T-1000 almost tops with the sandman.

  • @MaximumMadnessStixon what about optumis prime :D

  • @joshisakiller He's up there, too.

  • @MaximumMadnessStixon no transformer? :(

  • @aznredragon629 They're up there, but the just don't quite look real enough to me. The lighting in particular (they always have an unnatural "sheen" to them) and some animation that's a bit too smooth gives them a way just a little too much.

  • @MaximumMadnessStixon makes sense seeing how hard it is just to make one transformation scene tho no?

  • @aznredragon629 That's why I said they're "up there", as in they are a very admirable acheivement, they just aren't as convincing as other effects-based characters.

  • when i saw that scene it was cool it was like seeing a sand castle move ive been waiting to see that

  • hey guys there r so many deleted scenes from SM3 i have seen the clips, for eg, sandmans daughter and ex wife r at the final battle, harry and venom have a one to one fight, you see sandman rob the bank flooding the whole place up with sand and the spidy follows him down the sewer, i hope that they will have a directors extended cut of the movie

  • ok where did you see the clips!!!

and if you can, upload them.

    that would be awsome!!!!!

  • The Sandman may just be the best CGI character ever (tied in with King Kong).

  • They don't look soo cool though, or king kong looks better but anyways...

  • what about the T-1000?!!

  • fantastic

  • Great!!! upload more Making of if you got them!!! 5 stars!

  • WOW! Do u have any more you can upload?

  • So sad...

  • Whats sad? :D

  • good job guys, i was in aw when i saw it at the cinemas
