@AlbertMondback Sorry, not true. I have an album from an early DC Emo band, Foundation (1985), that clearly has "Genre: Emo-Core" on the album sleeve. Many of these bands considered themselves Emo.
@scubaduba23 well, because I was around then and ordered every Dischord album from #4 on, when they came out; let me be the first to educate you. They did consider themselves emo. That name was popularized around 84-86 in the DC area by bands like Gray Matter. I remember it vividly and could probably easily show you evidence with any Maximum R&R from around that time....also have an old emo album from 1985 that the band even put "Genre: Emo-Core" on the album. It was emo, and is true emo!
Gray Matter was so ahead of their time it makes me fucking sick. Food for thought/take it back and Thog are two of my favorite albums of all time. Don't know why people make such a big deal over Rites Of Spring when this band really captured the music and times.
the best ever!!!! i think the difference between what i call original emo and new age emo......is the old emo had punk roots that comes out in the music, new emo doesnt have those roots. i compare it to vanilla ice tryin to be a hard-core rapper.
Indira, totally, I was 16 at this show... I agree that Darker Days was great, I still have the $5 cassette... Nation of Ulysses, that State of the Union compilation, still in heavy rotation.
always had this EP as one of my top 5 punk albums of all time...nothing else they did compared....I liked swan street from 3, but this EP flat out rocks...IMO, they influenced as much as shudder to think and other dischord bands...just never get the credit
Chutes and Ladders is the track title. Fucking great song off a fuckin' great album. This must've beeb one of their last shows being 1989. Yes, Senator Flux, great band but I feel lacked the same energy Gray Matter had.
I don't recall if I was at this show, as I drank a bit back in the late 80s... and those days are a blur now. At 40, I love seeing these shows appearing on the internet. They let me pine for my youth without trying to re-live it as that awkward guy showing up to see kids. Space was the Place!
Why is embedding disabled!!! i need this in my profile... well anyways, gray matter kicks ass, my favorite band off dischord. They, and i dont know why, remind me so much of minor threat... strange.
Geez I miss those rooms upstairs. DC Space = Legendary!

None of the first wave emo bands (or a t least very few) considered themselves 'Emotional Hardcore'.
Deep Purple don't consider themselves classic rock or heavy metal, and Bauhaus hates the term 'goth', though.
