how could anyone talk about kanazawa.he's the best in the world...i am a black belt and i couldn't find a single bad thing in this kata...i am sorry for all those haters who can think they can do better...
If you ask me the belts don't even matter. If you do it for belts well then you don't know anything about karate. I still wear white belt, becouse I don't train for belts, but for myself.
It has the basic movements, but that is all. The kiais are very weak. The problems with the technique presented are not problems of style, rather they are problems of physics and mechanics, which thankfully are fairly easy to fix. Anyone is allowed to question a karateka of any rank, but respectfully. If I make a mistake with my kata, I hope my yellow belts have the courage to question it and I have the humility to correct it.
@RaitoNg ya so did i..really need 2 practice...am i the only one who finds it hard to do a kokutsu dachi..man it feels like my leg is gonna fall apart 11
@soumyaaymous : IF ANYTHING in Traditional Karate seems "hard".......the you're on the right path , my friend. The standards are perfection, so you have your whole life to get there ( pssst. : & nothing will ever be perfect)
@soumyaaymous No Your not the only one it Takes time and practice if it hurts then your probably doing something right... Im having alot of diffuclty with this Kata right now with the Side Kick like for instance my toes are up for some reason in this Kata i did 50 Side Kicks Tuesday and 100 yesterday just like my front kick Needs more power... Im in tons of pain but i wasnt in Pain doing them until my Sensei Started having me do them over and over until I get it right.., Good Luck :)
i am going for yellow ,what material will they exam me for the yellow belt ??? oh and have you ever used karate in a real fight ? was it effective for you ?
well they will look for how well you know the moves, if you pause to think. How well you (power included) do the moves and how serious you take karate. I have not met anyone who didnt get their yellow belt!
If you wish to get better at the katas you should get 'shotokan karate with kancho hirokazu kanazawa' I have used karate many times. I have used it many times, its very effective again multiple people!
never mind the account thing lol ,thanks for the good news ,is it ok tp use moves taken from kata ? for example i learned spear hand from heian nidan ,i guess its a pretty effective attack if u know where to target
i am also interested in learning Aikido ,wich is a soft style ,it will be an excellent combo ,how much time do you think must i take karate before beginning to take Aikido lessons with karate???
Following his question....I started Karate (Shotokan) at age 9 and still do now. At age 28 I fell in love with Aikido. At the beginning I felt like I was being too stiff when Aikido requires you to be relax in order to avoid major injuries when being applied a technique....as time went, I trained my body to differentiate between my Aikido and my Karate....I am now 38, I still do both....I would not say that I felt confused but the thing is that both arts have different approaches. Best for you!
well why dont you get up to blue belt then start on aikido, this will give you enough time to get use to karate and the move styles. It will also give you an advantage when you start Aikido!
I know you asked this about 3 weeks ago, but since no one answered Ill try to help =D
Your examination, from what I remember, will consist of you demonstrating some basic moves (Gedan barai, punches and blocks). You will also be examined in Heian Shodan and/or Kihon.
Using Karate in fights? of course, but obviously not traditional karate. The moves in Karate-do are exaggerated purposely in order to improve your reflexes. Later (but not much) you will do free-style Kumite as well.
I'm tired of people knocking our Masters! Don't comment on what you don't understand! Kanazawa is a 10th Dan. The Masters all develop their own styles. Watch Yaguchi, Kanazawa, Okazaki, even Dixon & Cline. They all have their own unique style of Shotokan. Not right or wrong, better or worse, but their own, unique style, suiting their body type. Yaguchi Shotokan is not Kanazawa Shotokan. If any of you disagree, I'm sure Kanazawa would love to have his technique corrected by a yellow belt!
i do did that many katas i had to do this kata over and over again for like 2 stright months befor getting my blue belt so it just wasent just handed to me
A Blue Belt At 12, Thats Not Good. You Shouldnt Be One Until Ur At Least 14. U Oviously Dont Do Enough Katas. At My Karate School Up To Blue Belt You Probly Have To Do 10-12
blue belt at 12?? HAHAHA. you must be RICH. i got my blue belt when i was 14. and my brown at 16. i got my honorary black at 18. and im still training right now. i got it all from kumite and learning my katas WELL. let me guess.. when you punch.. your hand is wobbling... lol
I agree, roboticDuck1. I'm not sure how young kids should start (it's individual, after all), but I noticed that too young kids are (mostly) just not able to learn proper techniques. In Japan and some other countries (my former home country being one of them) Shotokan practitioners could not do Black Belt Exam before the age of 18, and I totally agree with that and believe this rule should be imposed everywhere.
Oss is a Japanese word written with two different characters, the first character means "to push" the second means "to suffer." These two characters symbolize the importance of "pushing" and persevering while "suffering" through whatever difficulties life presents, to maintain high spirits, facing all obstacles with a positive attitude. A deeper meaning relates to "keeping the faith" no matter what you encounter or strive to do. On the simplest level, oss signifies a feeling of deep respect.
i just got my junure black belt yesterday (im 12) and it cool how when you get to black belt all the katas you dont even have to think it just happens.
I know in the west the Black belt is seen as a master level. But in Japan it is seen as the 'first step/level' (shodan). Keep at it and Good luck with your Karate studies.
Congratulations on your Black belt. My instructor took all the new black belts and got them to run up a line blocking all the adults attack's one person didnt block so my sensai picked him up and carried him aroung (the guy he was carrying was 14). Did you guys happen to do something to celebrate your black belt?
wow u learnt this kata for yellow, its a black belt kata, I know at most schools u learn this kata before black but wow yellow at my school u learn this kata at anywhere from orange to purple belt.
um dude i dont know what ur doing but this is the kata you do for your yellow belt. its the kata after heian shodan. hopefully you were just joking right or got mixed up. otherwise you should get ur dojo closed
In the original Shotokan Heian Nidan was the first Kata. In the 1950's the Masters decided that it was easier to learn Heian Nidan's back-stance after learning Heian Shodan's front stance. Hence, the 2 Katas got switched around. Many dojos teach Heian Shodan first now. BTW, I got that straight from Sensai Joe Dixon, 6th Dan's mouth at a seminar last weekend.
My dear friends. Please understand that Kancho Kanazawa along with Funokoshi Sensei and Nakayama sensei are the greatest Shotokan Karate Instructors that have lived.Which Kancho Kanazawa is the living kancho of Shotokan Karate.Kanazawa Kancho has taken karatedo to another level. He continued what his teacher Nakiyama sensei started. He is a remarkable human being.
I agree, Kanazawa Sensei is the living Kancho of Shotokan, and deserves all honor and respect, but you are forgeting Kase Kancho in your list, he developed a whole new approach to karate do, specially with his hente waza techniques *bow*
sensei kanazawa is the only 10th dan shotokan practitioner in the world and all that other wotnot but i was always (and still am) taught to just raise my hand and go for it but hes the expert and as a yellow belt i have no right to question it
2008/4/19th: Heian Nidan is quite different from Shitoryu's version of Heian Nidan. I am intrigued by BOTH Shitoryu and Shotokan! I wonder how different Heian Shodan is between the two lineages???
I believe the opening "double block", is blocking a high round punch, turning it over into a standing arm bar, ura zuki to their face while it's force down, pull their head into a bottomfist strike & release and go to the next person.

why should he be held back by age? Why should the fact that he was born later restrict him from expanding his knowledge and his passion for karate!!
The only age restriction placed should be minimum age to start and mimimum age to gain the black belt!
