I remembered watching this when I was 15 being really awestruck. I had watched Gregory Peck in 'To Kill A Mockingbird' which I had just read for school and which struck with me until now. They were already old but still majestic, elegant and so classy. She was perfect as Daniel Day Lewis' mother in 'Nine'.

What a beautiful woman, yes she still is at 77 (born September 1934), what a survivor, what a great actress, she belongs not to Italy or Hollywood but to the whole world. I recently rediscovered Two Women/La Ciociara (in the original Italian of course) for which she won the Best Actress award in 1961, the first non-English language performance to do so. She was superb, the church rape sequence overwhelming in its raw power. Brava, Grande Sofia!

sinceramente nemmeno secondo me lo meritava...ha fatto ottimi film in italia perchè è stata aiutata da ponti e da de sica, ma ad hollywood nessun film suo è passato alla storia del cinema...nei film internazionali iniziali per esempio timbuctù, il ragazzo sul delfino, il coltello nella piaga, desiderio sotto gli olmi, orchidea nera non ha dimostrato nessun attitudine recitativa, nè comica, nè drammatica!!!

I know, babe, but the American film industry could never have properly translated it back in 1961. Roughly speaking, LA CIOCIARA means, in case anyone here wants to know, the "sandal-wearing woman of central Italy". The word is derived from Ciociaria,acentral Italian region around Rome and the "ciocie", a primitive sandal or shoe worn by peasants and street people.
