  • its more consistent if you have the same tips on each arrow and the same length of arrow. Just an inch difference can change the speed by 4 or more fps

  • @G5bowhunter They are all the same tips (shape and design) - just different weights to achieve proper tune - the same reason for the slightly different length of the one arrow - you cannot just add weight to a shaft and it still fly tuned to the bow - believe it or not it was very difficult and involved to get all three arrows of different weights to fly tuned out of the same bow - and to have all the same FOC.

  • Remember that penetration is not everything, the goal is to expend as much energy while in the target as possible, so the Broadhead causing "Drag" is doing its job, because it is expending more kinetic energy while in the gel, Which is what you want for kill shots, lots of energy stopping inside the target.

  • Excellent video Hoss very professional !

  • Thanks for taking the time to do this---a lot of literature on the subject and it is hard to get consistent results when repeated multiple times at distances from 15, 25, and 35 yards from my own experience---so many variables...

  • @jphibler

I think that the bottom line is that whatever is gained in penetration by an increase in weight is lost by a decrease in velocity and whatever is gained in penetration by an increase in velocity is lost by a decrease in weight. Through my testing with my bow it seems that the happy medium is around 7-8 grains per pound - to get a fast flat shooting arrow that is still quiet out of the bow.

  • I find Deer ribs are very easily penetrated , an entire phone book would be excessive for bone comparison . But obviously this is just for Deer , and only for ribs . When you think about it , it doesn't take much kinetic energy to penetrate a Deers chest cavity . I would imagine even 20 pounds of KE could get the job done , maybe with just a single lung hit .

  • I agree with you. I just thought the remark was funny. Resistance of the medium should be factored into your 'penetrating energy' idea. Also I believe you said it but ballistics gel was made to test high velocity bullets so maybe not the most suitable test material for arrow penetration.

i suppose the only realistic indicator of arrow performance comes from shots on live animals because of the varying tissue densities (body cavities, bones, hide, organs).

    Thanks. I enjoyed the video

  • @gundogism

I choose ballistic gel to represent the semi moist nature of flesh and the phonebook to represent the solid nature of bone - the problem with live or dead animals is that there is no way to shoot two arrows and get the exact same resistance with each shot to compare the arrows ability to penetrate accurately - the animal is not a consistent medium - each shot will encounter different resistance - that was not the case with the phonebook or gel.

  • All the formulas in the world mean nothing if what they predict are not reality. The reason I chose the phrase "penetrating energy" is because obviously KE (kinetic energy) and P (momentum) are not the only formulas that come into play when predicting how an arrow will penetrate - as this test demonstrated quite clearly - in both mediums the arrow with the lowest KE and P penetrated the deepest.

  • penetrating energy?? what's the formula for that? lol
