@sharpezor - well - I didn't look through the comments before posting that. You have obviously too much time on your hands, hence this retaliatory reply. Well done. I hope you feel truly superior.
It's the solar max. Not nessarily doomsday material, just a period of high activity. Sort of like hurricane season on Earth; lots of storms, but doesn't mean every city will be destroyed.
AFAIK, if we monitor the sun and see a strong event coming, then we can do shut downs of large areas to avoid a blowout. Again, that's AFAIK.
From what I've read we can only predict solar storms 10 minutes before they happen. That's not enough time to avoid major damage, is it? And wouldn't technology be affected either way it's on or not? Wouldn't we need a way to protect it from the storm?
It really depends how intense the storm is, AFAIK.
Some take days to effect us. The strongest ones would be in minutes. And that really depends how fast one can act.
Again, AFAIK the main thing we'd protect would be our power grid. With no current going through, it could survive the induction caused by Earth's magnetic field responding to a solar storm.
@Prodigyexam12 As Greatexterminator said, timing is rather variable.
As for protecting ourselves, the o nlu things that are vulnerable are the electric grid and everything attached, and then, only if the grid is up & running. If the "breakers" (or whatever they're called on large scale) are opened, and the generators are disconnected, they should be safe.
Keep in mind, even though many call the effect "electromagnetic pulse"/ "EMP" It's not the same as a nuclear EMP
@slikrx - The mechanisms for each are very different.
A nuclear EMP affects pretty much every electric conductor that is oriented correctly, and isn't shielded (in a Faraday cage or euquivalent) It creates a large electric surge on even the smallest conductors and wires.
A "solar EMP" only generates significant voltage on long wires (as in miles long).
BTW,what you are looking at is a Coronal Mass Ejection(CME) and it is heading towards the Earth.Which will produce auroras on the North and South Pole.(Nov.14-15).
And the Oscar of largest youtube video goes to ......... TheBadAstronomer!!!!!!! Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!

The sun spot activity has been unusually low ---may be we are due for more sun spots & thus storms--more data is needed--good post!

Is that in real time? ( I know that's a relative question!) It's amazingly fast and energetic! I also agree about uploading a slowed down version!

Question: I read about an impending solar flare in 2013 that's supposedly doomsday material. Is this true and if so, any way to protect it?
Prodigyexam12 1 year ago
@Prodigyexam12 I meant protect technology not the flare.

Oh, wait, sorry my bad. Astronomy doesn't involve using programs to make 2 seconds of footage extremely cool.
