your right predatordes..I wouldnt call it sloppy, however his live play is almost always very loose. The thing is ,he is more than capable of dialing in his studio "sound" when playing live..Ive seen him do it,but I think he bores quickly from playing the same songs over n over..he looks for improv
Ive studied music history from the pre medieval periods where gregorian chants reigned as the most advanced form of music....all the way to present day.....and jimmy page has played in many different types of bands and many different styles....if you say he is a copy cat because he bases his music on the acoustic blues then you really dont have a clue what your talking about and YOU are the one who misunderstands the history of music

dumbass. the band was just as reliant on JPJ as any of the other members.not for his playing ability, but for his songwriting ability and the influence he had on the band. if it weren't for JPJ we wouldn't have the mystical madman behind the piano during the 30 minute long solo in "no quarter". and did you know that JPJ wrote the legendary riff in "black dog". or the soulful bluesy bass improvisation in "the lemon song"

i think that bonham and Page and Plant by far are the most talented and solid in the band. I would completely disagree bout JPJ. JPJ was the by far the least needed member of the band. If you disagre you should really learn how to play a stringed instrument then
Buddy: he takes the lead in this song, who do you think is playing the mandolin? He is backbone for the band. Plays Mandolin, Bass, and all the keyboards. Least needed? Give your head a shake.
I cant believe what you are saying!! JPJ is a genius he can play any kind of instrument, he and plant wrote all (or almost) the songs of "In through the outdoor" because jimmy and bonzo was in drugs and all that stuff, I think Jones is the most intelligent and skillful of the 4 members

Whats hard to explain to those of you who are "younger", is that when they did this kind of song - It had never been done before.
Thats what still blows us away, is the memory of stopping and going WOW! Thats cool. Now so many have done similar things that this is probably less impressive but back then - WOW!
that's right, this was a new thing...stopping the show and playing a quiet acoustic set...the first 'an evening with'. then back to rocking hard to finish the show. people went home in awe and talked about it for weeks.

This song warms my soul. I saw Led Zeppelin twice in the early 70's. Wow, what an experience. A group of friends and I drove to the concert in an old yellow Helms Bakery truck (a southern calif thing). As you age, you will learn to appreciate all types of music. Most people get suck and listen to just one type of music, Don't make that mistake. Any music that makes move is good.
I had the life-changing experience of seeing Led Zeppelin, & being completely blown away by them @ Hampton Roads Colliseum in'73. This tune, & "Tangerine"are my very fav ones by these amazing legends!
tragically overlooked all too often in this band. He was the best bass player rock music has ever known. And I'm not going to waste my time arguing with nerds putting Geddy Lee or anyone else in the same class as JPJ.
some of... most of his basslines blow my mind. I've played bass for 17 years and I can't fathom how he came up with some of that stuff (Ramble on, What is and what should never be, etc.) - and none of it nerdy over-playing, it was always the perfect part. He was the most solid and consistent member of the band.
You know a good musician friend of mine told me that good guitar players are a dime a dozen.(no slight to Page here) But a truly great rhythm section is a very rare thing indeed. JPJ and Bonham are the tops, followed closely by Geezer and Bill Ward from Sabbath. (Have to throw that in)

This version is prolly thier most beautiful song next to The Rain Song. Its a fun song to play on Mandolin and is rather easy to learn on the acoustic, its in my 5 for zeppelin songs.
As soon as I heard this song I just had to play it on guitar, a few years since then & I still play it. It's quite easy actually: DGDGBD
The best live version of "That's The Way" is on a triple Disc CD called "How The West Was Won", I really don't think anyone can argue, & the original is in F#.
Hey, do you and yellowledbetter16 know if you can get this string of acoustic stuff at Earls Court on a CD, not a DVD? Please tell me if there is. This and the surrounding songs on the DVD are my favorite Led Zep tracks.
Hey, do you and zenfreestyler know if you can get this string of acoustic stuff at Earls Court on a CD, not a DVD? Please tell me if there is. This and the surrounding songs on the DVD are my favorite Led Zep tracks. By the way, was your screen name inspired by the famous Hudie Ledbetter, better known as Leadbelly?
Plant's singing voice changed a lot; when he first started singing in his band of joy/other bands years, his early zeppelin voice, his latter,i'm not sure if his solo years voice sounded like his latter zeppelin...i'm not sure, and then his present voice.
I keep watching this video over and over, I cant get enough. I really didnt hear this song when I was a little girl, I heard it much later in life and its certainly one of my favorites. Im curious though...do you know what year this song came out? or do you know any other facts about this song? and crap while were at it, do you know what year traveling riverside blues came out?
Jimmy Page and Robert Plant wrote this in 1970 whilst on a retreat at Bron-Yr-Aur cottage, Wales. They took a long walk with a guitar and tape recorder, sat down in a ravine, and composed the song
From what I heard from another all hearsay...plant blew his vocal cords out between 75-76 , watching video from that time period there is a drastic change in his method of singing, plant when he sang did not sing using his diaphragm nobody ever taught him properly ...it was almost painful at times when he screeched his vocals . All hearsay only plant knows the truth , I think there might be some truth to it though plus the drugs and booze and who knows what else
Can I ask a question? How come from 1968-1977 Plant's voice wasn't effected by drugs/alcohol etc., but by ITTOD his voice is so sad, and different? I mean; listen to Presence, that's the best I've ever heard his voice, and consensus stated that his voice got better as time went on, so why the sudden change?
This is one of my favorite Led Zep songs, aside from both the Bron-Yr-Aurs, Tangerine, The Battle of Evermore, and of course Stairway to Heaven. On the DVD, the whole string of songs at Earl's Court is fantastic.
On another note: I have a video posted on here called On The Town In New York. It is very funny. To find it, however, you have to type in oggendoggen.
Also: I play Bron-Y-Aur Stomp in a different tuning than Jimmy Page; it sounds good, but not good enough. He is probably doing it in drop D or whatever it's called, because he does That's the Way and Goin to California in the same tuning. If anyone finds the tab or the correct tuning, could you PLEASE respond to this comment? I will check it quite frequently.
its off the led zep. dvd that came out around the time how the west was won came out. it has a picture of a desert scene on it. the same pic thats on led zeppelin dot com
Hey Dresden67, my account was gone this morning! I dont know why but here is my new youtube name. Bear with me and I'll have my new acct back to what you all remember soon! Sorry Im such a pain in the ass! :o)
fuck... fantastic as always. God. And JPJ is fucking great on mandolin. Wow... Page as always is our mystical man of wonder. Robert Plants voice and stage presence is, godly.
See Page play dazed and confused with a friggin violin bow.

The best live version of "That's The Way" is on a triple Disc CD called "How The West Was Won", I really don't think anyone can argue, & the original is in F#.
zenfreestyler 4 years ago
Yeah, but the version of "Going to California" that precedes this number is crap on that CD.

It's not really...

By the way, was your screen name inspired by the famous Hudie Ledbetter, better known as Leadbelly?
oggendoggen2 4 years ago
I'm not sure man, I know u can get the Madison Square Gardens on CD & DVD but I don't know about Earls Court...
zenfreestyler 4 years ago
hmmm. well, u could record the DVD version, put it on a computer, and burn it. Also, you could check on ebay for a bootleg, or maybe an actual CD.
blackfloydzep 4 years ago
only comes in a vinyl, and it costs over 200 bucks.
blackfloydzep 4 years ago
huh? this is from the 2003 dvd release -- the vinyl/LP (Led Zep III) is about 40 bucks...

Sandycheeks1968 4 years ago
Travelling Riverside Blues" is a blues song written and recorded in Dallas, Texas by legendary bluesman Robert Johnson
Led Zeppelin's version of this song was recorded at the BBC studios on June 24, 1969,

"that's the way"
Jimmy Page and Robert Plant wrote this in 1970 whilst on a retreat at Bron-Yr-Aur cottage, Wales.

All hearsay only plant knows the truth , I think there might be some truth to it though plus the drugs and booze and who knows what else
dresden67 4 years ago
Can I ask a question? How come from 1968-1977 Plant's voice wasn't effected by drugs/alcohol etc., but by ITTOD his voice is so sad, and different? I mean; listen to Presence, that's the best I've ever heard his voice, and consensus stated that his voice got better as time went on, so why the sudden change?
SpiritNirvana 4 years ago
Plant didn't do drugs, he was in a car crash in greece which affected his voice, a lot of Presence was recorded while he was in a wheelchair.

To find it, however, you have to type in oggendoggen.
oggendoggen2 4 years ago
Also: I play Bron-Y-Aur Stomp in a different tuning than Jimmy Page; it sounds good, but not good enough. He is probably doing it in drop D or whatever it's called, because he does That's the Way and Goin to California in the same tuning. If anyone finds the tab or the correct tuning, could you PLEASE respond to this comment? I will check it quite frequently.

JPJ is just great. Not only playing mandolin, but also the bass pedals at the same time (towards the end of the song).

Pure, undiluted MAGIC. When watching some of these I am at a loss for words, so at the risk of sounding incoherent, I'll leave it at that.
