i truly respect chris and he and i are a lot a like i spent 5 years hitchhiking canada and have spent 3 months in the wild aka no mans land ultimate freedom i made some travel videos check em out on my page
After "Door to Door", "Seven Pounds" and "Beautiful Mind", probably this movie is the best inspirational movie i hv ever seen. All films i just named are based on true stories and changed life style of many people.
I think one day i'll do something simliar to this, i understand the freedom and the beauty, i want that freedom and beauty, no matter the cost. The beauty of not knowing the time, the beauty of knowing what a struggle is, the people you meet, the love for life.i know this sounds selfish for one to say, but i once heard from some one "Every man dies, Not every man lives". To me this is the best way i could taste the very bone marrow of life and all it's aspects.
Greatest movie i`ve ever seen. so naive, but so PURE, so true. it make`s me cry every time and consider many things about my own values. and great acting!++
Timothy Treadwell & Cris McCandless two of the finest examples of the Environmental Movements lack of understanding of the World around them and the World they are Destroying.
but awful slow movies are not my thing. If you feel like wasting away watching two and a half hours poor acting and pure boredom this movie is for you.
Is a good movie man .. but sincerelly ...i agree with you in one way ... for wich i found an explanation : this trailer contains all actions from the movie...and make the movie look quite empty on 2 and a half hours..
Sean Penn might be choosing a different life then Christopher McCandless, but really made a very good and meaningfull film about a man who's not naive or an idiot, but who is finding his way to ultimate hapiness and freedome. Everyone has his on way of doing this, and so has sean..
I do not think he is this great hero and should be deified; he was arrogant and fatally disingeuous re his "adventure" and died a wholly unecessary death leaving his family heartbroken esp his sister to whom he was very cruel, so no, he is not a hero and should not be remembered as one.
i think you'd be wrong to feel sorry for chris. personally, i envy him. the boy had a dream and he took all the risks necessary to get where he wanted to be, and on his terms. sure, he died young and unnecessarily, but he also lived happily and fulfilled his dreams. what more can you ask for out of life?
he accidentallly ate a poisonous herb that he mistook for one that was safe to eat- the poison had an affect on his digestive system and he wasn't able to keep food down, so he starved to death- saddest ending EVER
Jon Krakauer is one of my favorite authors and his book "Into the Wild" is motivational and very sad, I felt sorry for the fate of Chris Mccandless. I didn't know about this movie.
To the few people claiming that mccandless committed suicide, I must strongly disagree. You have to keep in mind as he is slowly and painfully dying of starvation he has a rifle with him. He did everything to hold out as long as he could, dying in a horrible way. The fact that he didnt shoot himself when he realized he was going to die is a testament of his character and how much he cherished life. Ultimately thats what his whole journey was about, taking a risk to live life to the fullest.
why do all you fucking people make frun of the one that is so free that he dident want one like hes family in the way so he wanted to be free why cant you understand that
i totally agree with you....almost ALL of the people in the world are buying nice car, living in a nice place to feel better about themself when others are jealous of them. this story is just....not modern poeple could understand it....nowday people only care about how to become a "pimp", or becoming a gangster....how sad...

Essentially, Chris McCandless committed suicide."[12
How or why should one "learn" to live in the wild. We are all born into the wild as a species it is life it is natural. To say he committed suicide is to say that a polar bear that dies due to unsuccessful hunting or an elephant that dies because a water hole dried up is also committing suicide.
i don't mean to cut in but HE died from HIS OWN stupidity... i have spent a lot of time out in the woods, why he would not take a map or compass, or why he would take an alarm clock is beyond me... he essentially committed suicide is a good way of saying it...he made too many mistakes to even beging mentioning them...
Um, he didn't die because he didn't bring a map or compass. He died because of a mistaken plant identification. It poisoned him and part of the side effects was that he couldn't digest. I am pretty sure an alarm clock wouldn't be much in keeping him from starving ;)

Wow I just saw it, and I have to say it was trulely an amazing story. I have never read the book before but this movie brought tears to my eyes, and opened up many new ways i think about life. The ending is so sad

Gilch, just because it's the internet doesn't mean you shouldn't show people respect. Don't let the little things hold you down like that. In the words of Bob Marley "free yourself from mental slavery, none but yourself can free your own mind."
Hey Sean great questing movie! Your boy is on the ladder. I liked how you asked him if I go first(down the rapids)will you? You definitely have the right stuff-get in the zone right away. You could have hung at our playground-all it ever was, was fearless dares.
The beauty of the inner hero quest is that you don't have to go anywhere to find your self-you just have to go within. Find an activity that makes you feel good and peaceful at the same time. Examples: Sports-the zone. Actors-the place of divine play, where space is not divided by form. Fishing-when you can feel the fish take the offering at a distance. Then try meditation at once. Hone in on the same feeling of peace within the chaos of your mind and watch the chaos subside.
i dunno, we'll see. was he really in a kayak on the colorado? I thought he was in a shitty canoe or something? I hope hollywood didn't fuck this one up. Hard to imagine penn doing that, but who knows.

A Poem For Chris:
Is it real this person who feels
I try to see him as I know I should
A man destined and cut from society
A wonderer seeking truth in search of needs
In nature a land of beauty he set himself free
Set with a goal to search the depths of his soul
Into the wild he flew beyond reason God only knew
Onto the mountains until he knew, his journey was now threw...

You're a fucking idiot.
If we are all "born into the wild" as you asy, then why don't you go live in the middle of the wilderness with now supplies and see how long you last.
Humans have reached a point where they are no longer of the Earth. This is sad and pathetic and true.
Were we still "born into the wild" then we would also be raised there and have the necessary skills to exist there.
This selfish asshat thought he could skip that step and he ended up dead. One less idiot in the world.
