  • 8v53 or 12v71t

  • olivers are awesome

  • was detroit the ergininale engin it came with from the factory

  • @jeremylee99100 Yes.

  • bet the guy on the phone couldnt hear a thing!

  • Its nice to see so many other Oliver fans... feels like I'm the only one here in upstate NY

  • @Spendleton123 There are lots of Oliver fans in Tennessee.

  • @Possumlivingdotcom Yea its mainly john deere and farmall out here and ya start to get sick of john deere ha

  • @Possumlivingdotcom i dont think theres many in illinios im a big oliver fan

  • @mrclaytonio I'm surprised; as much farm country as Illinois has I would have expected lots of Oliver fans there.

  • @Possumlivingdotcom well i dont really know were there would be any more people with olivers except i went up state and seen 2 nice olivers on the way

  • @mrclaytonio I just Googled "Illinois Oliver tractor" and saw quite a bit of info. Also, check my other videos. I have a much longer video of this tractor, including an interview with the owners. I have video of 88s and other Olivers pulling too, that I plan to upload.

  • @Possumlivingdotcom There's a lot here...you just gotta know where to look and "upstate" Illinois isn't really the place.

  • @fuelnfirensmoke Yeah, that's kinda' what I figured too. I used to live in upstate Illinois, and didn't see nearly as many antique tractors there as I have seen in the southern part of the state.

  • @mrclaytonio Did you base your opinions on how many you saw from the interstate?

  • I shot more footage of this tractor pulling last night, and will upload it soon.

  • Takes a shit-load of torque to wheels, to get the sidewall of a tractor tire to wrinkle!

  • needs a 6-71 lol

  • @mrat455 I agree. That would make a great puller.

  • Really? I didn't know that. DDEC didn't come in the little 53 series tho Advancing the timing helps a lot too.

  • KICK ASS TRACTOR!!!!!!!

  • 8million rpm right there lol

  • I like these "screamers"

  • MAN would that thing suck to run. you would be deaf in a matter of days hahaha

  • cool

  • And the most common way to get power out of an old two stroke is to put bigger injectors in them. There is several different sizes of injectors for detroits

  • @IH682D There's a Lot more than just "several"...there are "custom made" sets out there, to. The Lady Butterfly

Pro-Semi (NTPA & East Coast Pullers) ...the last remaining 12V71 in the pulls, is running 250cc injectors!! .... and

with DDec can get 315cc. Of course with the 250's.... not running on the stock mechanical fuel pump, alone...either. :)

  • I had to watch this video again. You must have the N-70 injectors making maybe 140hp

  • Did'nt trough that tractor was so big xD...

  • Did Oliver and Cockshutt ever "join forces" the tractor looks very similiar to alot of cockshutts around here

  • @JonneyTurbo65 the Co-op tractros that look like Olivers are Olivers painted red. Co-op sold Oliver built machinery from at least as far back as 1944.

  • I have an 1850 with a locked up engine, I wouldn't mind getting rid of. If you are looking for a new project

  • What does Bacon gravy have to do with this?

  • Did some Oliver tractors come stock with Detroit Diesel two-stroke engines?

  • @3Mudbone1 Yes, several of them did, including this 1950.

  • @Possumlivingdotcom Cool, I have been to rebuild schools and worked on them. I will be looking for one for my farm now.

  • @3Mudbone1 They're great engines. I have a 2-71 generator, and I have put up a couple of videos of it running, here on my YT channel.

  • nice looking tractor. was that the sound of you dropping gears twice? nost groups only allow one change of hears during the pull... of course my 1850 can only be dropped a gear once if i did anyway...

  • @oliverplowboy I'm not the driver, but it does sound like she shifted up, then back down near the end of the pull.

  • I love the 1850 and 1950 olivers....have one at work that's got a Perkins in it...best runnin tractor ever...just a few leaks on the oil pan and round the rear end but that's common with a tractor that old

  • "Run it like you hate it!" seems to be the way to run those Detroit Diesel engines,

  • @OzzInter Yeah, that's what they say. I've heard that when you drive a Detroit-powered truck, you should slam your hand in the door first thing in the morning so you will be good and mad at it, before you even start it up.

  • Thanks alot!

    henkie

  • hi, mr possum, "Eliminate intake and exhaust restrictions " you meant that in the intake and axhaust be changed, (polishing? grinding, remove blemishes?) for a better flow of air? there are certain things you extra care to watch? The tractor is currently transported to the Netherlands (sea container) so I know it's totally not what the materials are of the intake / blower. Sincerely, henk

  • @hehehehenkie Simple things first, like a low-restriction intake air filter and a large-diameter exhaust system with no muffler and no or minimal bends. If the engine is being rebuilt, smoothing and polishing of the ports in the cylinder liners and of the exhaust ports can help.

  • question,

it is difficult to tune the Detroit 4-53? what is the most common way to get more power?

  • @hehehehenkie Detroits are pretty simple to tune. The first step in getting more power is like any other internal combustion engine, eliminate intake and exhaust restrictions. After that, with the Detroits, you just put in bigger injectors. If you want still more, you can add one or more turbochargers.

  • my grandad has a oliver!

  • To turn over 3000 rpms almost all tractor pulling associations require a steel flywheel and a blanket.I see none on this tractor so it better only be turning 3000 rpms.

I pull an Oliver 1950 weighing 13,000 lbs in a 3000 rpm tractor class and it sounds just like this one.At 3000 rpms a Detroit sounds like its turning 6000 rpms.

  • thets see how far we can turn the rack up until now more smoke can physically come out the exhaust!

  • yeah I would say 4500 at least I ahve worked on a few 4-53 and 3-53 and a few 8-71 and 6-71 and a12-71 and a 8-92 silver . Diesel's can turn rmp's I know of a few funing 6500-7000 in pulling trucks and a detriot will turn 6000 easy

  • @slimG2082 I talked to a guy recently who pulls with a Cummins, and he told me some of them turn 8000 rpm and make around 1300 hp. I have a Cummins too, but I keep mine below 2500.

I gotta say though, as much as I love a Cummins, 2 cycle Detroits are my favorite.

  • @Possumlivingdotcom I have a few friends that pull them and one is running 7,000 rpm in his 12 valve . If you have a 12 valve they run good below 2,500 but if you cranks it up a bit to run 3,000 to 4,000 and add a bit more fuel the realy turn on that is what I plan to do with my other cummins I have and put it in a 1855 or bigger oliver and see how that pulls

  • @slimG2082 I don't doubt it. I don't pull mine though, so I prefer to keep the rpm down for the sake of longevity. I would like to get a million miles out of my 12V, although I'll probably eventually have to replace the truck that houses it.

  • love the sound of them screaming 2 strokes

  • that thing is sweet!!!! how many rpms is that thing pulling!!!!!

  • @xrsrule 5500-6000 rpm.

  • @Possumlivingdotcom seriouse i thought it would be aroun 3500-4000 max!!

  • @xrsrule It's not mine, but according to the owner, that's what he's turning. That is some serious R's for a diesel.

  • @Possumlivingdotcom yea man that is serious RPM's for a diesel!!!!

  • @Possumlivingdotcom its a detroit so its a two stroke. it may sound like its turning 5500-6000 rpm but its probably spinning 3-3500 max. i could be wrong but from my experience with these motors they scream like there turnin 6k but are only spining 3k rpms. =)

  • @reducedfat11 I'm aware that it's a two stroke, because I have some of them and I know what they sound like. This one is turning 6000 rpm, according to the owner. I have seen it pull several times, and I can assure you that it is indeed turning at least 5500.

  • @Possumlivingdotcom well then i am surprised =)

  • @reducedfat11 they were rated at 2400rpm but it sounds like they're spinning twice as fast because they're producing power for every revolution of the crankshaft.not every other like a 4 stroke.

  • @ackermanfarms i knew it he was tryin to tell me it was spinning 5500rpm

  • @reducedfat11 -They can tell you all day long that its turning 5000-6000 rpms but its not...I was pulling a 1965 model Oliver 1950 over 40 years ago and back then we turned the little 4-53 Detroit 3300 rpms...People from the crowd would come up and say "you must be turning that thing 6000 rpms" and wouldnt believe me when I told them it wasnt...The same thing happens today on my 1967 Oliver 1950 puller so I have them get on the tractor in the pits and watch the tach.

  • @BAG649 Well, that's all good, but in this case it's not somebody from the audience who says it is turning 5500-6000 rpm: it is the guy who built the engine and pulls with it. This is his wife pulling in the video. Personally, I have no horse in this race, but I'm inclined to believe the guy who built and owns this particular engine.

  • @Possumlivingdotcom if this engine is infact turning that fast i am amazed how far he is ahead of everyone else in getting diesel to burn faster. the limiting factor on how fast a diesel can spin is that as a fuel diesel burn slow compared to gas. i dont believe a diesel can turn that fast.

  • @reducedfat11 Of course diesels can turn that fast. Not only do some of the Cummins pullers turn over 7000 rpm, a stock VW diesel can turn 6000 with no problem, and a stock Mercedes diesel will turn at least 5000.

  • @reducedfat11 It only sounds like it is running that fast, because it is firing on every stroke. it is probably only 3000, but sounds like double.

  • @Possumlivingdotcom That cannot be that many rpms.. The max i'd say is like 3200 or 3500.

  • i like to shift when i pull:)

  • I love those detroit, but zero torque

  • @cranemaninamerica yep, thats why it ran out of power at the end! gotta keep them reved up

  • can someone please tell me bout this 2 stroke diesel i dont know anything bout them

  • @454sskilla Check my website, which is linked from my Youtube channel. I have just written a description there explaining the operation of the Detroit Diesel 2 stroke engines.

  • and this lady's and gents is why grandpappy cant hear anymore... from plowing all day with this baby.

  • awesome pull, and an incredibly strong 4-53. Could you tune my 8v92 to run that good?

  • doing a little extra rpm's are we?

  • my dad always told me the olivers he and his brother had back in the 70's could really pull. never had the oppertunity to operate one with a detroit, but i would deffinately buy one someday.

  • i could farm all day if i got to listen to that sound! anybody know of anyone putting a 3-71 or 4-53 or similar in allis chalmers wd/wd45? i'd like to do it not sure if the engine is physically too big....

  • @seriessixty525 I've thought about that, because I have a WD45 Diesel with the Buda 230 engine, and if the injection pump ever wears out it will probably be cheaper to put a Detroit in it than rebuild the pump. A 3-71 would make a great engine for a WD, and I'm pretty sure the factory diesel bell adapter is standard SAE and would work with a Detroit.

  • @seriessixty525 except you would be deaf!

  • Problem with these as pulling motors is that when they are below 1600 rpms they do not wanna pull at all.

  • Yeah, the 53 series is a shorter stroke than the 71, so it doesn't have as much bottom end torque. A 3-71 would have almost the same displacement as this 4-53, and would pull hard down to about 800 rpm. Unfortunately, then it would no longer be legal for this pulling class.

  • Thats why the shepards make excellent pullers in farmstock if you can find one

  • That is a sweet looking tractor...Love the sound of that Detroit

  • anything with a detroit kicks ass. gotta love your oliver product

  • @arcticman1000 sorry about the thumbs down...pushed the wrong stupid button.

  • @arcticman1000 ever heard of kermit....little oliver 99 with a suped up 371 detroit? used to be owned by mccombs i think.

  • @screaminjimmy92 Is "Kermit" on yt here??

  • That is a nice tractor!! Sounds good

  • you should advance the timing a tooth and put a turbo on it!

  • Rules for this class don't allow turbos. But thanks for the comment!

  • well that sucks but hey anytime! i have a tractor just like that i just restored just not quite as much smoke

  • @jfuller1950 your talking about the injector cam timing right ?
