nice job!! just DON'T put your flute on your chin!! its supposed to be placed in the middle of your lower lip. then you can adjust your embourche from there. if its kept on your chin, you go flat.
Well it doesn't sound bad, but I think you are not breathing with your diaphragm. The reason I'm saying that is that I'm seeing how your shoulders are going up every time you breath. Even though your breaths are short they should be more ample. And I think you should hold the notes longer. That is the whole point of this exercise. And see how when you lose your breath you lose your vibrato too. That means you're not controlling it properly from your core. Try some yoga exercises. They help.
ok i don't know much on vibrato because i havn't really been taught it but from what I hear is sounds pretty amazing!!!! :) i would like to sound like that. AND CinematicTwilight i hav the exact same question as you do...

The worst thing you can do is play with a metronome; it's crazy unless you like sounding like a robot.
Play with singers on CDs and then you will sound like someone who has expression.
The best flute players in the world are from India; and they went for Centuries with NO METRONOMES...and they have killer rhythm too. Keep going like this and you'll sound as bad as Galway with his mechanical vibrato.
Uhm, they used sticks as metronomes. :] they'd have to have a partner to keep the beat while practicing. Metronomes are just a more convenient alternative to that. Keeping the beat is VERY important. If you're a soloist and will always be a soloist, it's not super important unless you want to keep the song sounding nearly the same every single time. For an ensemble, it's HUGELY important to keep the same beat, so the group can stay together. I agree, though, that vibrato shouldn't be mechanical.
If you can't keep the beat steady sans a machine then you will never be a good musician.
And according to the phrases the beat is always changing in subtle ways so again metronomes are not needed. Ear training is, and metronomes are crutches. Eventually you will HAVE to use your ear. Modern music sounds like crap when there is a drum machine and mechanical beat that stays the same. Robotic is not human.
Alright Gipsy King. I played professionally for 15 years, I don't know if you're just saying that to sound important or just to say something. And yes I am 8 months behind with this. But you are WRONG. Yes some people have a natural rythm inside them. That doesn't mean we shouldn't use a metronome while practicing - EXERCISES - or when we practice in general. That keeps you in check. I would really love to hear your playing and see how "natural" you are a keeping time. Cheers!!!
Gee, how in the world did Indian and Arabic, and Africans get along sans metronome for thousands of years..and they have the best rhythm in the world. So much for ME being wrong.
Your sound is very pinched. So tone quality is not your forte either.
Wow, a pro for 15 years? I've only been one for 30.
It has nothing to do with sounding like a robot. And if I might ask Mr. Professional Flute Player, what kind of music do you play? I don't know how many books you have read on African music but it is based on rythm and pattern. And I would really love to hear one of your playing sessions and we'll talk about it then. I mean WTF... who taught you how to play flute? Or are you a genius that has known how to play from the womb and doesn't follow tradition?! 30 years, of course you had to top me :))
Oh wait, just went on your channel. You're not even a flute player... Wow!!!! BTW students when they first start learning need "crutches" to get it in their system. Of course you have to use your ear, that's how you play as a soloist or in an ensemble. A metronome is used as a practicing and aiding device. I was so right about the Gypsy Kings stuff. LMAO. Anyway, don't want to hurt your feelings too much. I will take it that you taught yourself how to play or something...
I guess I was just sitting in those Rampal Master classes so I could learn French. Alain Marion was also an influence.
Well, her playing is stiff and vibrato is too. So, looks like the metronome aint exactly helping.
I dunno where your getting all this Gipsy King nonsense but I studied Spanish music of De Falla, Rodrigo, Albeniz and Granados not Pop faux Flamenco music.
I'm sorry I don't try to throw my music down people's throats. It's on CDs and Video Recordings. And just 'cause you sat in their master classes doesn't mean anything. So what? My teacher was one of Rampal's good friends. Let's start throwing names around. Her playing is stiff bc she is afraid and she doesn't exactly know what she's doing. That's why she posted this video to get advice not to get people to tell her she sucks. I think with practice she can get to a good place.
PS: Just 'cause you think you're right it doesn't mean you really are. Look around and see what everyone else is saying. Nobody has anything against the metronome except for you. This was supposed to be a positive thing for her and not for us to argue about what is the correct thing to do. Just live in your little Cafe Concert world and let's just end this 'cause it's getting old.
OMG dude just let it go. Ok? You're a freakin' guitar player that attended some flute master classes. We got it. And if you don't know what Cafe Concert is then maybe you need to look it up. 'Cause that's what you're playing. I'm not pretending to speak for anyone but myself. I was just saying for you to read what everyone else is saying. Just 'cause you're older doesn't mean you know more. And Rampall died in 2000 so you might not be the only one that has seen him.
I was trying to give her an advice that came from experience and years of practicing. Now if you want to talk shit about something that obviously you don't have any positive advice to give then be my guest. I'm done arguing with you. It's stupid. Just 'cause you're little ego is hurt. This is just stupid. This poor girl doesn't have to look at our rants on her video that don't even have anything to do with her. If you have something to say to me you can pm me and not make everyone suffer.
Too bad; I don't know where you're pulling all this nonsense out about what and who I am but then I guess since I only know about all sorts of music from many countries...I don't know anything because I don't have a clue what Cafe Concert is. Who cares?
I'm fine with what I do know.
Too bad if you picked a fight with someone who knows more than you. Then try to talk shit about me not being a flutist. You're nuts.
You're not breathing correctly. You're breaths are shallow, fill up your lungs from the bottom up. If you do this correctly your inhale will be silent. Good vibrato though.
i liked it. she had a good sound. thats one thing i need to work on. lol. i've tried so many time to perfect this (or at least do good) but i just can't make it. i guess i'll just keep practicing til' i get it. lol. all thanks to nina for the vid she posted.
what catches me is the high register, med and lower is no problem, so i try to fix my embouchure to help me with my tone. as for the exercises, well.....i dont really have an "exercise" per say, instead i practice on my posture like wise how i try to fix my embouchure.

When you practice you should always be expressing, playing with a beautiful sound, and making the most music posible. If you practice with the mentality that this is only an exercise, you wont be able to make music when it counts.
LedRocker11 4 years ago
I agree with LedRocker11. Vibrato is most often used for expression in music. It makes the piece sound more musical than just notes on paper.
