  • Fantastic playing! I love this piece and you play it very well and with great feeling...

    Respectfully,

    James

  • Tks.

  • well done !!

  • Beautiful composition by dowland and interpretation by you.

only one thing, at the end you put the dinamics very hard, dont forget, this piece was originally composed for lute, that dindt have the same capacity to generate the volume that the guitar produces.

    other than that, just beautiful.

    bravo

  • I love what you are doing with that fantasy!

Very few concentrates on building up to that almost orchestral forte (fortissimo) in the end. The piece is really very dynamic and shows Dowlands mastery of creating dynamic tension and almost orchestral density by means of refined use of rythm - with ony two voices. Bravo .

  • This is an amazing piece. Currently learning it myself, the F# tuning throws you completely off. I tip my hat to you sir, this is played excellently.

  • nice... but in my opinion this should be better a little slowler..

  • This piece is particularly complicated, I take my hat off to anyone who can play this piece in its entirity. You are very accomplished to be able to play any sort of baroque music. I wisj I had your ability and musicality, but alas my fingers are unco-ordinated and clumsy.

  • It's not Baroque; it's Renaissance.

  • Just fantastic! How can a youtube video leave me smiling all afternoon? :)

  • "Thank you for watching." Thank you for such an inspired interpretation. Are you a lute player as well?

  • musicality there. I used to play it in a similar fashion. But in those days I dôn't think one was rushing for a train to catch.

To appuyando or not to appuyando is the question (at the beginning especially).

hope you comment on my version ...

    BW

  • @nomusician

There is also a stroke that is a softer rest stroke, sort of midway between a free stroke... and in the case I think the beginning is too harsh and could use a softer touch at the beginning.

There's a very old Williams record of this piece (along with Lady Hunsdon's Puffe) which I think is the best out there.

A hard piece but it's my fav Dowland.

  • I like how you play, you're very clean and precise

  • you are an incredable guitarist

  • hi. somebody has a fantasie in .sib format? or .pdf? Where is it? thanks...

  • that was really well done

  • Absolutely beautiful. What model and make is your guitar? It's got some nice separation. Every note comes through distinctly in the contrapunctal parts. My compliments.

  • Philomelodia: It's a Manuel Bellido 1996. I think the discant is really awesome on that guitar.

It's not my best guitar, my best is Yngvar Thomassen 2008- Awesome guitar with incredible power.

  • could you do more dowland pieces please

  • @3.33 there must be an e# because four notes before there is one as well and it is one of the most beautiful measures

  • Hey Johan,

0.44, .56 -.57, 1.10, 1.29 are few of the examples of dissonance due to lack of tuning between the 4th and 1st strings(probably 6th string too) . Listen carefully at 3.53 - 3.56 and 4.04 -4.05 Final chord proves the Es are out.

There may also be some kind of distortion effect in the recording.

Why don't you re-record it, I think you're a competent player, your choice of piece is good. Dowland and Purcell expressed emotion like no other. Looking forward to more videos from you.

  • bzeliotis: Ok Your'e right, the F# tuning could be tricky (:.

  • Nice effort but it would have sounded so much better if you had checked the guitar tuning carefully beforehand!

  • Nice played.

A very useful tip though would be to use a capo on the 2 or 3 fret. This would make the fast passages easier for you to play. If you put it on the 3 fret you also get the renaissance lute tuning (E-A-d-f♯-b-e')With the capo on you also get a more even harmonic from the basses which sometimes drowns the higher notes on a classical guitar playing renaissance music.

  • I meant G-c-f-a-d'-g' as the 6-course renaissance lute tuning. The other is of course the guitar tuning, with the g-string tuned down a half.

  • Dominicus: I know i lost my capo (:.

    Thank's anyway!

  • Excellent very pretty! I'm going to look for the tab and learn this one, very inspirational.

  • good work^^

  • Loved it :)

  • credo che la ripresa del tema prima al canto poi alla melodia centrale e poi al basso debba essere + netto ed evidente, si perde un po' nel basso (quasi non si sente:questo all'inizio del brano)..cmq complimenti per l'esecuzione

  • Great work, your interpretation is acording to the great dowland, this is ONe of the most complex works of dowland but their big one complex work names "chromatic fantasys" no this

  • excellent work mate.

  • Love it! 5 Stars.

  • A superb piece played with great skill. Nice work.
