I just got this game after wondering if I should. After seeing your review and a few other considerations, I decided to go for it and I am so glad I did. One of the best games I own.
I know you will really hate me for saying this tom, but the mechanic here is a lot like Munchkin..
Your'e battling someone.. friends can choose to help you out or screw you over, you can play power ups, heck you even draw a destiny card similar to when you bust down a door in munchkin to reveal you destiny!!
I know the theme and the concept and the way it plays is different, and cosmic encounter has obviously more depth to it, but couldn't help but notice the similarities!
@davidchircop You did watch the review, right? Cosmic Encounter is over 30 years old. You could say that it is the great grandfather of the current batch of card games. Sure, there are elements in Munchkin that are similar to CE, but there is no comparison from a gameplay perspective. There is absolutely no strategy in Munchkin. There is way too much silliness and randomness to try and apply a strategy. You might as well draw straws to determine the winner at the start.
Oh My God. Dont listen to this guy - he obviously never played the Mayfair version. That had over a hundred powers with the more cosmic add on, and was a far far superior game that has for some reason been dumbed down to pathetic watered down versions like the one in the video. Also the board was well cool - I am not sure what the hell the appeal of the one in the video is, and i dont like to tell him he has the hyperspace cone upside down
@Thyri100 Stop acting like a jerk. ALL the reviews tell the same, this version is better. You are just in the minority of people not liking this fantastic version, sorry.
I've been looking around for board games lately seeing as the holiday season is coming up and I'm so glad I've come across someone who's so passionate about board games, it's so refreshing to see.
I think I'm definately going to get this game and I wouldn't even consider myself a board game geek or anything, that's how much you're love for this game has enticed me. :) Thanks a lot.
i'm one of the people who hate this game haha. i guess you either love it or hate it. ive just played games where one player got too big of an advantage and everybody just went through the motions knowing he was going to win, facepalming the entire time
I've introduced a lot of new players to this. Ive found that the best way to explain the game to new players is to go by the phases printed at the bottom of each alien card, by name. Many other cards have this chart printed on them to show when said card can be played and players knowing when they can play a card, cuts out a lot of confusion later. It also helps them to understand the explanation of their alien's power and helps them to understand the flow of the game under normal circumstances.
A nice quick review on my all time favorite game. It's nice to see it's back.
In your battle example of red attacking blue I believe you have the cone reversed. Play-wise it will accomplish the same effect, but may cause some confusion to new players as the rules show it the other way.
Also, to avoid confusion, offensive allies should be placed in a different part of the cone and defensive allies should be placed next to (not on) the planet they are helping to defend.
Dude you review great stuff! I want to get agricola but I want someone to review it first so I know if it is anygood! By the way if you want to play a really good game play war on terror the boardgame(It is hillarious)
Have you tried Space Alert? What do you think?

This looks like a game that's right up my ally. Unfortunately, it's not available anywhere right now. Sigh...

The worst mind game I had with this game was when I was the Sorcerer and my friend was the Loser. I still have a headache from that lol

Disappointed the Filth is again left out. I know it's problematic, but it is also great fun - especially with hidden powers!

Ha ha ha! I loved the story of you betraying your wife. That was the perfect explanation of how Cosmic Encounter plays and feels.
If you screw a player in *Diplomacy*, chances are you're never gonna speak to each other again, but in Cosmic Encounter, it's all in good fun.
Great Review. Told me everything I wanted to know about the new version.

i see android in the back ground , you really need to make a vid. for that.
I am reading the rules and it is so hard, and i think your vid could help.

I have written a review of Android online, I would check that out. I'm not sure I'll do a video about it.

@Ogma01 The defensive allies go on the ring around the cone, so they are never placed on the planet and cannot be mistaken for a base there.
