  • @xxkil. Most versions of the Catalina were 'amphibians' and the sponsons (or tip floats, more accurately, as they are not technically 'sponsons') were retractable. If you look carefully at the wingtips as it lands, you'll notice that the wingtips are fatter and have a boat hull shaped profile. The tip floats were kept retracted during all phases of flight except taxying/mooring, taking off from or landing on water.

  • The PBY has always been my favorite airplane. Never flew this one for real, but have been in the right seat. It is the landrover (read: waterrover) of the planes.
