Tony, I understand how you feel about the Korean comfort women, but how about the CHRISTIAN CATHOLIC Filipino comfort women who were without any doubt or dispute forced into it and forcibly raped by the Japanese during the ocupation? Tony, I believe some of the Korean comfort women were paid and that most of them were forced. But regarding the topic at hand: a) the previous S Korean govt was a dictatorship and did not speak for the people b) the funds paid did not go to the people, in which case they still had redress. In the anger of Korean people, it is not important whether there were volunteered sex slave was exist or not. If you didn't hear of these cases, they are too widespread to list (a quick google search will give you the results). In most cases, the Japanese would target schools of 12 - 14 year-old girls. But regarding the topic at hand: a) the previous S Korean govt was a dictatorship and did not speak for the people b) the funds paid did not go to the people, in which case they still had redress. In other words, the Korean govt does NOT have the right to seek future damages, but an individual CIVIL suit on behalf of the victims may.

The NY Times on Jan. 8, 2009 said Korean prostitutes put U.S military and Korean government on trial. They complained about having been forced sex with Americans in Korea. They worked as comfort women from 1960 to 1980 in Korea. Moreover, an LAPD official said some 70-80 prostitutes were arrested every month, and 90 percent of them were Korean. Were they forced to be sexual slaveries by the Japanese military? Was the story true?

Also, they amused themselves by participating in sports events with both officers and men, and attended picnics, entertainments, and social dinners. They had a phonograph and in the towns they were allowed to go shopping. The Ladies were allowed the prerogative of refusing a customer.

According to the Japanese Prisoner of War Interrogation Report No. 49, which was reported by U.S in Aug 20 to Sept 10, 1944, 20 of Korean ladies were working as comfort women in Japanese camp during WW2. The "house master" that means manager of the comfort house, received 50 to 60% of the girls' gross earnings depending on how much of a debt each girl had incurred when she signed her contract.

In the anger of Korean people, it is not important whether there were volunteered sex slave was exist or not. The reason why this is big issue is that regardless of volunteers, there were many forced sex slave by Japan existed back then. So example of volunteers is totally out of topic on this issue.

What was happened actually? Many brothel owners opened their business next to military gates. It was a natural because they could make more money. This is quite natural. Therefore Japanese military did not open these brothels during the war, but brothels owners who were local people in the countries which Japanese troops were dispatched. Were they hurt by the Japanese? We can’t find any evidence of that except ladies verbal statements.

@kure3173 Ladies verbal statement much more powerful then missing document evidence. Absence documents evidences cannot be even used to judge whether there were slave or not. Documents could be burned away by associations and could be fabricated for sake of their own good. But victims verbal statements are different. They are not asking any money. They are bringing issues of morality. They are talking about moral as being a humans.

The issue here is the act of apologizing vs. the responsibility of apologizing vs. the meaningfulness of apologizing. If I were a Japanese government official, yeah, it would be nice to apologize to the affected comfort women. There wouldn't be any meaning behind it though since I was born in the '70s and had nothing to do with the war. It would be like bumping into somebody in the subway or on the street and mumbling sorry... We all do it... However, I would be extremely pissed... [cont.]
