Since I was a teen, I've loved this song. Now it means even more. My birthday is in October and I lost my mother to breast cancer the day after my birthday this year. October is a wistful month full of joy and sorrow...but I hate to see it go.
This song reminds me of me and my husband because he came into my life in October and when we got married in December it was snowing as we walked around town trying to find the court house to get our marriage license and we were laughing and playing like two kids. Now, He make be seriously sick and I cry when I hear this song because I may lose the love of my life.
A timeless lyric that just becomes more and more profound the older one gets... I can never make it through this song without tearing-up just a little bit. It is heartbreakingly beautiful.
this song brings back beautiful memories that i will remember for the rest of my life. The kind of memories that on christmas i will be tell my children and their children about. I love you daddy since you we're the one who introduce me to this song to me this is how i will always remember you. Love you
The song brings back memories, some sad, some happy of a time and place when the world wasn't so cold and complicated. Seems life will never be as it was and memories are all I have left.
I lost my fiance 9 years ago in November this year and it breaks my heart every year when October goes and we are back in November which has so many awful memories
This master of arrangement, performance, and vocals has left a tremendous contribution to the 20th Century Songbook. If you never saw him in performance, you missed out. BIG TIME !!!
I have loved Barry's music since I heard Mandy on the radio in the 5th grade in 1975. (Ok I just dated myself!) . Although this was not one his popular songs it is one of my favorites along with Please Don't be Scared, his rendition of Stardust on the Swing Street album (I thought I was listening to my dad's piano playing again as it sounded just the way he played it!) & so many others. Long Live Barry!

Johnnie Mercer's wife found these lyrics after he passed. They were complete, but with no melody, so she asked Barry to write a melody for these prosaic words. How beautiful...sheer poetry, and now a melody which is their equal. Two great tallents together thanks to Johhny Mercer's wife.
Sorry to correct you 'pennymusicmama' but the lyric is actually by Johny Mercer.
This from Wkipedia: "When October Goes" is a ballad based on a lyric Johnny Mercer had written but did not complete. It was matched up to a melody by Barry Manilow and published in 1984, becoming one of the top Adult Contemporary hits of that year."
This is my favorite Barry song. The way he sings it is so sincere and his beautiful arrangement have to make his the best recording of this tune... I wonder who he was thinking about when he recorded it.
Nancy Wilson and Barry colaborated on a cd spotlighting all the Mercer compositions with Barry's arrangements...I highly recommend it, especially Nancy's haunting version of this tune...Barry accompanies on all tunes on piano. Classic stuff truly.
This was my late husband's favorite song. October was "our" month. His birthday was in October, and it's when we took vacation to enjoy the beauty of autumn together. He left this world in October - just a few days after his 52nd birthday. I always remember our wonderful times when I hear this song.
I think you're right.. and Rosemary Clooney used to sing it.. at least once with Barry.. I wish that recording was here! I love them BOTH! Classic song, eh?:)
PENNYMUSICMAMA.... not to argue the point with you, but Manilow has stated for the past quarter century that this was a Johnny Mercer lyric given to him after his death by his widow, and that he put music to the lyric.
What evidence do you have to support your Arlen statement? And in what way is this a gift from you?
Reply for Tre404, The comment was made a Long time ago, & mistakenly stated Arlen instead of Mercer. Please accept my apology. I'm sorry. I knew this, however, Arlen was on my mind @ the time & admit the error. Mercer & Arlen were both great musical lyricists.
The gift was simply sharing this music video/Song with a dear Friend.
No, I thought maybe I'd missed something, and what I'd heard for a quarter century may not be true. You mentioned Arlen, and after all, how many people in 2008 still remembered him?
Apology?? Nonsense. I was merely asking a question. Also misunderstood your 'gift' comment. MY apology.
I cry as I sit here listening to this..my dear precious husband's birthday is October..I miss him sooo much...

great 'standard' lyricist, Harold Arlen, & set them to music. I love this. It is difficult to refrain from crying.
