one thing I never got about the "Russian" gimmick. why (for the most part. I know there were exceptions like Nikita later in his career) were they all bald?? Every wrestler with the Russian gimmick was always bald.
I use to love ivan and nikita even though they were heels. I loved all the wrestlers back then in the nwa. There were so many who could cut good promos and they kept it serious and intense.
Not many clips of the russians with Vladimir Petrov. If memory serves me correctly he was quite a bit larger than nikita. Always loved the russians, I used to do a pretty mean nikita imitation as a kid, always calling out maggot ta for his us championship. God this would never work today but it was great as a kid.
THIS WAS WRESTLING AT IT'S BEST.......I CAN REMEMBER SEEING KIKITA BREAK MAGNUM TA'S NECK AS A KID & LOVING THE ANDERSONS,,,,THANK YOU TO WHO EVER POSTED THIS STUFF
I always loved Ivan's promos. He always seemed like he wasn't a heel but more so of a realist, somewhat "praising" the faces but still making his point as a heel
@sammys70 Ivan was born in Canada. None of them were Russian. Ivan and Nikita played Russian Characters. Krusher was an American sympathizer who joined the Russians.
People talk about Nikita Koloff's (Actually from Minnesota.) Physique and it's justified. However, Ivan Koloff (Actually of French Canadian descent) had a rather respectable physique himself for an older man.
I named my 200lb Russian Trophy Boar with 3" cutters Nikita Koloff and made a 4 minute video of Nikita Koloff promos and hog attacks. Used detharmonic as the background music while Nikita and hogs go on rampage.
When I get my Nikita Koloff back from the taxidermist I will update video.
I seem to remember knock down-drag down fights between the Road Warriors and the Russians all across the United States. Ther wasn't a lot of running except to the ring to beat the crap out of each other.
They came off as real to most of us. Who knew that Ivan grew up in Canada and Scott (Nikita) and Barry (Krusher) grew up in Minnesota with Rick Rude, Kurt Hennig, The Berserker, Scott Norton, Animal, Hawk and so many others.
I cant believe that i thought these guys were real russian,,,admittinglly i was 5 years old...but still this is bad l lol ,,,outro music brings back memories too wow
Ha Ha!! I hated the Russians back then... I was a little kid and the Legion of Doom was my boys man! But this is fun as hell seeing these old clips. I heard that Ivan Koloff was a licensed chiropractor. If you were in the ring with him and pissed him off he knew all kinds of little tricks through his chiropractic skills to make you pay. I heard he was famous in the locker room for popping guy's shoulders out at will and then popping them back in at will as well.
Uncle Ivan is always right!.One of my favorite talkers of all time and a guy who was very physically impressive even at the end of his career. For the person who asked if he is still alive,he HAD a website at one time. . . checking now to see if it still up.
Yes, he's gone very religious but he is still alive and I think doing some indy stuff from time to time, mainly in Christian wrestling events I'm pretty sure.
Ivan Koloff was one of the most underrated pitchmen in the business. Steady, concise, always in character, and a joy to watch. There will never be another time in professional wrestling like this. I'm so grateful I had a chance to see this the first time around. The we're no cheap gimmicks (yes, there we're gimmicks, after all, it IS wrestling), but you didn't have folks running around screaming "Suck It"! Gimme The Andersons, Koloffs, Flair, Dusty, Babydoll,Road Warriors, etc, anytime!!
@smrra I was watching a different match with Ivan and see some similarities with him and Kevin Sullivan, though I think Ivan was a little better mat wise. I miss this time too. Seemed more genuine and 'real' vs commericalized and polished like today. And I TOTALLY miss that sound their ropes used to make when someone got thrown into them. hahaha (oh and the cheesy 80's music when it came on too.)
the guy on the right reminds me so Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Dustys real name is Virgil runnels. Macmahon hated his competion so much that he gave mike jones the name virgil and paired him with dibiasie.
ironically in wcw dusty gave mike jones the name vincent and shane at different times to embarrass them!
