im a relative beginner and every time i see people shred like you or when i try to learn a song thats fast but not that fast (eg. fade to black solo) i feel like...... man when am i ever gonna be able to play fast like that and i was just wondering if you guys had that same feeling when you first started out and if you have any suggestions to get faster. it would help me alot to know that people this good were in my same situation at one point. thanks
Not bad but in my opinion - why not building strength with simply playing real music instead of boring exrecises like this? A good classic tune will give you strenght, accuracy AND real music
Question: why teachers always tell you not to lift the fingers whe you go backwards from 4th finger to 1st, but then, when they play, they don't follow that rule and lift all the fingers?
Awesome exercise and instructions. It has improved my picking and fingering by just practicing it for an hour. I also added metronome as you suggested to play eight notes and sixteenth notes. Thanks :)
hey dave and everybody watching this, i saw this exercise in a magazine but it was a tad bit different, once you get up to the high e string you go 1,2,3,4 then slide up 1 position before you start to come back down that way you when you get backk down to the low string you end up on the index finger 12th fret 13,14, 15 pinky.... get it? it just kinda makes it completely symetrical... great warmup and strength builder either way
thanks man, ive been looking for the past 3 days on how to strengthen my fingers. i tried doin legato patterns but they havent worked out. im gonna do this one.
why not refer to the note names, and not the fret numbers!!! this is why so many guitarists are weak at reading and knowing just what they're playing.
very true still... for the sake of time simply saying number is faster...
I teach guitar and I hammer my students on knowing the fret board... I honestly don't even teach them a chord on a string unless they can name all the note on that string.
It's so much more comfortable if you play on a right handed guitar (right hand picks) since most guitars, tabs and guitar stuff are designed that way. It's also so much easier to buy or borrow a decent guitar. How far have you come? You might want to play on a lefty guitar, but it will create a lot of trouble for you. Hope it goes well for you!
Ok, so when I want to go REALLY fast, I put my picking hand up onto the actual frets, it just seems that my pick can go like 10 times as fast... Am I the only one who does that?
does anyone know any other excercies for your pinky strength cuz i just realized how much my pinky sucks lol, my family actually has naturally somewhat crooked pinkies, its a trait that runs in my family and i think its screwing me over on guitar :./ its like double jointed and doesnt move smoothly
nearly every guitarist i've ever known started off having problems with their pinky strength - it just takes a lot of practice and repetition and you'll gradually improve more and more
Place ALL four fingers on the High E string. (Smallest one.) Simply allign then on the frets as 1 2 3 4. On those frets all on the same string. Now get your pinky and pull of the string (Keep other fingers placed on fret 1 2 3.) And just keep pulling off fret 4 with the pinky. You'll feel alot of burn, that means your pinkys getting stronger! (Best way to bulk it up!)
And if the fingers could talk, all the pinky would be saying while it's burning is 'Guys!! Help me out here man! I need you! Uggh it burns!! Oh the horror!!! Come on ring finger... i thought we were friends!! Don't be like that!!! aaaagh'
Next week your pinky will be cocky. I bet you it will.
It's a good exercise to just pull and hammer with your pinky.... it gets easy after a while :-)
That's funny. I wish there was some kind of operation to make my ring finger shorter so it could do as much work as the pinky does... it usually just gets in the way of the harder-working fingers
HA HA, That's what I thought too! ha ha ha... like this track from Cuckoo Clocks from Hell ...can't remember the name rite now ha ha... "Beaten with Sledges" !!! ha ha...
These exercises sound very similar to Diminished arpeggios. (don't forget to train that ear!!) They're awesome for getting the fretting hand stretched and adding dexterity. The hammer on, and pull off version definitely get my hands burning.
I just had full back surgery (with nueral stimulator implants in my spine, and a transmitter/battery next to my kidney), and I've basically had to re-learn the guitar.
I LIKE MARTY BETER :(
