Positively INSANE tempo! Bob, I love your little anecdote about how Woody just gave up on trying to keep a lid on the tempo after awhile. At 6.2 seconds a chorus, it makes me wonder if that's the fastest the band ever got with it!
Oh, and I love Dave LaLama's solo as he drags it down into the realm of mere mortals just long enough for the listener to find their feet and then the bass player picks up the baton and just goes running!
clearly Smulyan bro, wouldn't even have to watch the video. If you listen it's clearly his playing. Ohh yeah and at 3:02, Woody announces his name, doofus.
I'm not a huge Woody fan, but I really am of his mid 60's to late 70's groups. That was really the strength of his ensembles. His mid 70's groups were so talented - it was almost scary. The depth of the compositions and arrangements were extremely high quality.
I always love to hear Woody count off the band at one tempo and they ignore it and just fly........ hahaha.
Thanks for this. I saw Woody for the first time around this time in Houston, Texas at The Summit arena -- Big Band Conclave, then a year or so later at the Windmill Dinner Theater. I met Mr. Herman some years later at Rockefeller's, backstage, he signed my Newport Jazz LP.
Thanks for posting this. John Oslawski (bari sax) was a friend in the Albrook AFB Band, Panama. He died too soon--in Spain, 2000--and I'm making a collection for myspace. I'll post some stuff his sister sent to me soon, I hope. I agree, this last herd was the tightest band Woody ever had.
Woody had given up on keeping the tempo down after his countoff as there was competition between various Herds over the years as to which band could play Caldonia the fastest. In my time with the band (1/79-5/80), we hit 6.2 seconds a chorus in the Spring of 1980 with Jeff Hirshfield on drums.
This is great. Did you notice that Woody counted the tune off about 100 bpm slower than the rhythm section started playing it. Lalama, you cheeky monkey.
God bless Bill Byrne. Trumpet 5, road king, band manager, just about the nicest cat in the world. Ask anybody in the band thru the years from early 60's on.
Roast! Could you keep it down to warp-speed, Woody? Hey, Bob, how about that Bb cadenza — great!!!!! Yeah, fast 12-bar in Bb! Birch Johnson on trombone, and wow check Woody's burnin' clarinet solo — The Herd Runs the Heap!!! Whooo-heee!!!

Re: TEMPO !!! The *all important tempo* !
As a former drummer, and later a cosen favourite dancing partner -
this really turns me off. No feel whatsoever. No point at all.
You'd have to be stoned to appreciate such noise.
Sorry, but this kind of abuse really makes me vomit.

@buildelectriccarsnow Relax Former Drummer. They are just having fun. I'm guessing you never made a tempo this fast. Vomit on Old Dude!

Hey Bob, thanks for posting this. Tim Burke is doing Wicked in Chicago and I'm doing it in L.A.
A guy sitting next to me in the pit showed me this clip. The band sounds great! I thought the choruses were 12 sec. though.. Man, we look young!

I seem to remember the herds of '76 thru '79 clocking in at 6 seconds per. So there Bob!
We were higher ,faster, and louder, though some were higher than others.
