That was not really fast blackpowder, I use to spray a little water in the drum just enough to make it moist, not wet. And to the idiot who say never mill the composition when you have added the oxidizer: you sir are an idiot. This is an old and well known method, you have to mill all ingredients together in order to faciliate the coal and oxidizer marriage....

Anyone know why my blackpowder left a dark solid residue after burning? I used medical grade KNO3 100% from a pharmacist, 100% pure sulphur powder, and willow charcoal that I thought was grounded to airfloat. It has been a while, but I believe it was a 70:20:10 mix of KNO3:C:S. I have a feeling my friend might have skanked on the charcoal and bought some cheaper stuff instead. Any ideas what the compound was and why it came about?

@7th75thCallaghan try the 75:15:10 ratio. It can appear by a bad mixing components, so grind the components very well before mixing and after thar use the mortar and pestle or the ball mill

@ianspaintpot i use a pestel + morter and using isopropanol to make it easyer to grind then letting it dry after is perfect, tho 1 hour is not enough, 2-3 hours of grinding (urrrgggg i know) makes it nice and fine, presuming ur makign a 100g batch, no point trying to grind larger batches in a pestel and morter.

I used the method provided to me through the Pyrotechnics Guild International and a publication called: "PYROTECHNICA". I have also made black powder out of Sodium nitrate. The flash from this appears yellow. I would like to compose the same out of Lithium nitrate and then write a paper on it making a comparison between all three of them.

No, marbles will cause sparks (and therefore a explosion). Good black powder will cause a small bang in a casing (ie: cardboard tube). Nothing compared to flash powder though.

the only differance is that lift has dextrin in it so it will stay in a granular form thus allowing air inbertween the grains to produce more gasses thus lifting the shell higher in to the air

Hi yes you can use sodium nitrate which can be used as a substitute for potassium nitrate in almost all pyrotechnic purposes except flame color. hope this helps. adam
