@Isaacbean And you came and watched it too. You can put fox news in the title of some random video and get thousands of views too. It's just youtube. No big deal.
@kristinkology Actually hedgehogs in the wild do eat berries and other fallen fruits, like apples or pears. They mostly do it in the autumn and they might be more attracted to the insects that are being attracted to the berries/fruit, but the hedgehogs do eat the fruit as well. So giving berries to a pet hedgehog is quite alright, as long as you don't give it too much. Hedgehogs main diet consists of insects in the wild, and that's what it should mostly consist of in captivity as well.
@kristinkology Not sure why you are so insultive in your comment...especially since you are wrong. The only thing that MAY be an issue are apples as they have a chance to cause upset stomach, but not that may not be true for all of them. Just like people, some hedgies may like/dislike certian foods or what may make this hedgie not feel well doesn't mean that other hedgies will get sick with the same food. That is why start off with tiny bits of one thing for a week to see if it does ok with it.
And where would all these animals live in the wild, what with your expanding need for mcmansions, condos and the like? Duh...all you see in one piece of a huge jigsaw puzzle the creates the "big picture" of our world. Use some common sense, but I digress. ADORABLE video!
but it's easier with hedgehogs they'll eat so many different things thats why im planning to get a hedge hog even though my mom want's to get me a hampster
if you pet them from head to tail, when they are calm and keep their spines smoothed down, its an interesting texture, like pine needles. when they are afraid, they ball up and hiss, and will jerk their body to drive their quills through your skin if you get too close! you will bleed. they require lots of gentle patience.
really? good to know... i got mine when he was old from a neglectful family of young children and it was the only sweet thing that would get him to come out from his ball cause it had a strong smell. took a long time to get to where i could trim his nails... he did live to 14, what would you recommend instead?
@LeksiLamentia Is there any way to tell how social a hedgie will be before you buy it? I mean of course any animal before it gets to know you is going to be rather shy, but are there any specific characteristics to look for?
@njishottlikeatamale have you gotten one yet? well there's no way to tell, maybe you can pick each of them up bare handed and see which one reacts the best. dont use gloves.
Very cute little hedgie. And I just want to say to any future viewers that if you are considering getting a hedgehog and are new to this animal, I recommend going to the hedgehog forums (hedgehogcentral and hedgehogword) online to read as much as you can about taking care of them. They do require certain things, including a certain temperature.
And also, the hedgie in this video is eating berries, but I want to point out that there are things they can't. Grapes = not good for hedgies, for one.
So many idiots in the comments on here. Pets that are bred as pets will not survive -easily- in the wild, it is cold, they have very little regular food, they encounter parasites and other pests outside and they do not naturally know how to hunt or scavenge. I hate to think how many animals have been essentially abandoned by you. If you don't agree with keeping a pet as a pet and taking care of it as a responsible owner, then don't get a pet.
@branfeather Agreed! I used to be sensitive about zoos and stuff...but it sure beats starving, being poached, or run over by cars! It also helps people to be a little more considerate to animals by showing them in person and explaining how badly they need to be protected. Shelter, food, safety, socializing...its all already there! That's all most animals need. It's a tradeoff that I think most animals would gladly accept: Less space to run around, but safety and meals everyday. Sounds good!
@branfeather You're right. buying a pet and releasing it into the wild is a horrible solution; but buying one to "save" it from the stores is even worse, because now you're promoting animal breeding. Anyone both mature and morally sound enough to own a hedgehog would understand an animals right of freedom and wouldn't buy one.
actually some of you guys are wrong.. it will not live longer in a backyard. this hedgehog along with any other pet hedgehog has been born in either a pet store or a breeders place. it was raised in captivity, and given a balanced diet to make it live longer. if you let it outside it wouldn't have been taught survival skills from its mom and would expect food given to it, therefore not knowing what to eat. And the balanced diet is 100% sure its getting everything it needs, the wild isn't 100%..
@kendra112233 regular hedgehogs are born in the nature, its in their blood. even if the hedgehog is born in a pet store,he will survive at a backyard easily... diet does really help your right. but they need fat,but not to much.
there are bugs everywhere, plants everywhere... every plant in the world contains water.my hedgehog has been found in the streets, means he was someone's. i gave him my backyard and he lives a month already happily.
I have a hedgehog and they are really easy to look after!
they just STINK if you dont clean their cage regularly- so that is a must like with any pet
Mine is 7 months now and hes even cuter than when he was a baby :)
Just dont change their environment to much I got mine from Yorkshire and then brought him down to London and he was ANGRY kept biting me but then eventually he got used to it and stopped.
@Maddiifull They dont need shots but they need foot baths often for poopy boots from wheeling. and a bath once a month at the most when they get REALLY smelly, but other than that as long as you have the proper cage (NOT A TANK) and fleece liners (NOT SHAVINGS! wood harbours mites that cuase problems and newpaper gets caught in their privates and cause UTI'S) They need a really good mixture of a few high quality cat foods, and treats here and there
