3 things I find intriguing about Manfred von Richthofen are:
1 ... When he died, allied soldiers took parts of his plane as trophies of war. This activity goes back to primal ancestry of human between tribal groups.
2... The allies who found him and his downed plane gave him a full military honour ceremony and burial. The respect and chivalry goes back to the era of knights and before.
3... His death was caused by breaking his own rules of combat. Perhaps deep down he wanted out!
@alemelech World War I was fighting amongst nations and I can't see any having an upper hand of morality in that. Usual thinking will then see World War II and blame the 'evil Nazis' and see their defeat as rightful and moral yet these short-sighted people will never look at the treatment of Germany due to the 'Treaty of Versailles' after World War One nor investigate the secret funding of Hitler by Wall Street (even Prescott Bush) and British money.
part2 ... now as far as Baron Manfred von Richthofen is concerned, he predated the Nazis so that is not part of the disussion! He like so many aerial fighters had their own feelings amongst themselves which we can probably never know.
I heard a story of a German ace who saw the opposing fighter had jammed guns and so the German ace left the field of battle... the sense of chivalry and fairness was on all sides and so to label all Germans in such harsh tones is unwarranted and incorrect.
@zetetic0void one french ace let udet go because his guns jammed.in his letters to his family von richtofen said he had doupst that the war would be won by germany and worried for his countrys future.he wasmore of a pragmatist than an idealist and went to war because it was expected of him.
my step grandmother was playing in her back garden in 1943 when a messerschmit flew feet above the lawn.she waved to the pilor and he waved back just for a few seconds.
@zetetic0void what you heard is Ernst Udet story of when he flew against Guynemer(Vieux Charles) and his guns jammed......He flew up next to Udet and saluted before he flew off leaving his helpless enemy to fly home.....
There's a good book that was written after WWI and before WWII called The Red Knight of Germany by Floyd Gibbons. I think it came out about 1927 or 28. Original copies in good condition are still available and reprints are out as well. It's a good read, not only because of the respectful way it was written, but since it was pre WWII it isn't reflected against later events that color so much of pre WWII German History. If you haven't read this book, it is most worthy of your time!
@PoopStainProductions actually it was 81 i saw a video he shot down a plane in hiw first fight in the airs O.e but it landed on there terf and they really didnt confirm the death O.e!
so did Chales Nungesser,Paul Baumer Rudolf Bertold. at 2.18 that is Bertold's Fokker D7, the Fokker Dr.1 at 17 secs is from Jasta 18 Richthofen Never flew with this Jasta, He was with jasta 2 und 11. for those of you who speak Deutsch.
Mani and his Flying Circus motived themself by playing for onenightstands with women. When they had shot down a spezial number of planes, they could fuck with a woman. Richthofen got the Blue Max. "Stramme Max" is a Bavarian word for a hard dick. Someone in his one line was jeaoules at him, because he was very short away to have a special number of shooting planes down, he would fuck with a very wonderful woman. The guy manipulated his MG and Mani shot in his probeller. So he was a easy victim.
There is a Documentary on the Red Baron and it shows some actual dogfighting from the day. (amazing) It is black and white and a little jumpy, but you can hear the guns and aircraft, and it does not look anything like the movies being made today. It gives all the pilots a fair shake, on both sides. As for numbers and kills made...who gives a shit. Aircraft at that time....Cool dangerous machines!
I find the mystique surrounding von Richtofen interesting. He's damned as a cold-blooded killer and romanticized as a gallant knight.
The fact is, he was neither; basically, he was a soldier doing the job soldiers have done for centuries. He just happened to be very good at it.
However, I've imagined that had he survived, he would have left Germany (or been exiled) when Hitler came to power to serve the Allied cause - something that happened with more than one Prussian nobleman.
@BardCoennius wtf has hitler to do with that oO. it was ww1 no hitler... he just came to power after they fucked up germany with the versailles treaty and germans felt unfair treated and he used that mood to make war
@indahooddererste I don't think you read my comment very closely. I was simply playing a game of "What If...?"
The point is that there were a sizable number of Germans who were against Hitler, many of whom came over to the Allied side for that reason. (And yes, arguably Britain and France bear a great deal of responsibility in blaming Germany for a war that was caused by chest-beating nationalism on the part of all five major powers - and creating an environment condusive to fascism.)
although he shot down the most, other pilots scored more kills during any given shorter period of time, and if you read his autobiography, he says of himself, he is a better hunter than a pilot. i'm a Red Baron fan since 1965, but Udet would have surpassed MVR had the war continued.
Very cool vid. I've watched hundreds of videos on youtube and the funny thing is that in every comments collum, some asshole always asks for the name of the song used. Funny. I mean, check out this dude below.Fuck!
Wrong! His first kill(with which he was not credited) was with a machine gun from the backseat. It was a french Farman airplane. His second (also not credited) was a Nieuport and this time Richthofen was the pilot of an Albatross. Both times he did not get credit, because the planes fell behind enemy lines. His first 2 confirmed kills was a FE2 (Manfred mistook it for a Vickers) on 17.9.1916 and a Martynside on 23.9.1916. He wa a pilot by then.

if you do some real research, he wasnt that good, Mannock,Fonk, and a few others were better. even lothar his brother was reckoned to be a better fighter pilot, it was his position in german aristocracy that helped him. if lanoe hawker had a better plane manfred wouldnt have got him
He shot down more than 80 planes! thats more than any man through the whole war! Lothar only shot 40! The fact that he was a freiherr did not help him. He started out as a soldier(calvary)! does that sound like the position of a baron to you? Youre just a british asshole who thinks the world only gets at brittain because "his plane wasnt good enouph" whos fault is that? oh yeah the british plane desighner!

His death was caused by breaking his own rules of combat. Perhaps deep down he wanted out!
-- I doubt it, more likely a combination of combat fatigue and the injury with his head still playing up.
