I'm not sure about Plastic Mind, but ZUN did purposefully make it sound like an earlier track. It's on the tip of my tongue, but I cannot remember now. Why I say he did this is because, if you play Imperishable Night, and go to the music, in the description he mentions that it was meant to sound like an old one.

The original Japanese title is "懐かしき東方の血" (natsukashiki touhou no chi).

"東方" (touhou) is translated as "the east", but "the orient" is not wrong if it is appropriate to the situation.

As you know, each game has a demo. In those demos, there are only three stages. So he wanted to make all those stages sound awesome, like final-stage-ish themes. He says it himself in one of the song descriptions in the Music Room of a game, I don't remember which though. I think it's this theme, but not sure.
