  • Why were you replacing the head gaskets?

  • @dieselpuller one of them was blown. you always replace head gaskets

  • Nice video, but next time, use brake cleaner and WD-40 to clean off the carbon.. i don't know to much about all them tinny scrapes.. :/

  • amazing how engine design influences power output so much...my 600cc motorcycle makes 98hp, while this nearly 700cc engine can only make 16hp....

  • @SaGalv Strange Huh?

  • @JimmyFarina97 yeah really, i mean just simply by the angle of the air entering the combustion camber makes a world of difference.... the flat head design is so out dated it isnt even funny. But even single over head cam is even outdated in todays standards....and forget overhead valve, with rockers, thats a joke nowa days unless its a v8 with big displacement..... but 98hp out off a .6 liter 4 cylinder is where its at and even more if it has variable cam timing...the ICE has come a long way...

  • @SaGalv If only the popular engine companies would overhaul the designs for these engines so they could get this kind of power. although that may cause a decline in its reliablity and durability. they would have more power yes, but it could make them much less stable than todays mower engines. Briggs and Stratton's engine wasn't designed over night. they are insanley reliable in my opinion. so it would take years to design a new fuel efficient, high power model.

  • @JimmyFarina97 Well, Im like 90 percent positive that the flat head design is not being manufactured anymore for even small lawn engines. Most of them are OHV, and some are even SOHC design (yet to see a DOHC lawnmower engine yet).... In all honesty i has nothing to do with reliabilty, and more to do with the demand and application for these engines. Cars developed 1st becuase that market has a higher demand. Notice how motorcycle also progress more slowly then cars?

  • @SaGalv True. Lets talk Flat heads for a minute. think about tecumseh engines compared to briggs. both have flat heads (older ones anyway), both most likely don't get regular oil changes by your average owner. Both are used in the same applications, yet tecumseh seems to overheat, throw rods, and lose compression due to wear quicker/more commonly than Briggs engines do. why? Because of the design. Briggs worked hard to make their engines reliable. tecumseh wasn't so lucky.

  • @SaGalv (pt. 2) thats why they are out of buisness. :) but if they were not reliable, dont you think the same thing would happen to Briggs? so it would take a long time to find a good design for the application, and make it so that it wasnt constantly failing. and yes, cars come first with new designs, then motorcylces, and so on. by the time companies come out with these designs for better engines, we might even have a different way to cut our grass! or electric ones. who knows?

  • @JimmyFarina97 Didnt realize tecumseh went out of buisness...

  • @SaGalv yea back in 2007 i think. someone else bought the plans and destryed the reliablitity of the engines. o well.. I love the ones made before 1990. they seem to be the best. tougher if you will.

  • when he hits the trottle, it's sounds a bit like a volkswagen beetle.

  • looks like a montgomery wards made by MTD tractor

  • damn that thing sounds nice, im getting an mtd yard machine soon with an 18.5 horse opposed on it to turn into a racing tractor!

  • Great video and great music to go with it. Thanks.

  • sounds nice

  • did you do a new gasket in between ??

  • @DSLGKC550 Yes. You should never reuse head gaskets

  • @1skiinIan why not?

  • @seelder why not what?

  • @1skiinIan replace the gasket? whats so bad?

  • @seelder because they don't seal if you try to use them again. A new gasket compresses when you first tighten up the head. Especially MLS (multi-layer steal) head gaskets

  • @1skiinIan crap ur right lol im an idiot i can feel air leaking through the head when its running :(

  • @seelder Don't kill yorself, Most of us learn by experience. You can usually tell if it's leaking in these engines if you have that carbon deposite around the outside of the head

  • @1skiinIan how did you determind that it is 656cc

  • Do what one of my relatives by marriage did - he put in bigger valves and shaved the head for more compression in his 4-stroke lawnmower. Trouble is he overdid it - it only lasted about two or three mows before it threw the conrod.

  • Great job, That thing runs smooth.

  • They really aren't bad engines- seen them with over 4000 hours on them.

  • I have two 14 hp briggs opposed twins one isnt running right now but the other is I'll have to make a vid on them both. anyways nice video man

  • runs really well man nice twin

  • loving the music man metallice ftw

  • that motor sounds awesome!

  • just wondering why such big displacement is making such low hp, is it just a gov. restriction or bad flowing heads?

  • @kevinreid yes, these engines are flatheads. flatheads are the most inefficient type of head design, and on top of that they have small intake and exaust ports and valves. They are low compression engines too. Crappy cheap carbs. These aren't built for performance... at all

  • @1skiinIan Old comment i know but briggs are not really crappy engines these are power house engines by a long shot if your nut hugging tecumseh engines theres something wrong with you. these engines are great engine and a hell of alot better than tecumseh

  • @walkingfreak I never said anywhere that techumsehs were better than briggs

  • @1skiinIan yeah but these opposed twins are pretty much torque monsters

  • @1skiinIan I will agree with everything you just said. LoL I got a golf cart and it had one of these swapped in. I ditched the points and went cdi and ported it a bit. Sucker will stand almost straight up now. Not the most powerfull but it runs good enough for me to not swap it out now.

  • @kevinreid they are built for torque.

  • @goandy89 what are you replying to?

  • @kevinreid that you said they arnt built for performance... but yet really they are and have a lot of power in them. i use a 16.5 twin 2 for racing on the sand flats and or road and hill climbs. my rig is governed to 45 on road and pulls 43 on the sand.

  • u should adjust the valves

  • music?

  • @1978buickman Poor Twisted me, by Metallica

  • is that a snapper?

  • @demonsparkx read the comments I think I said 5 times that it was an MTD

  • @1skiinIan my bad,i didnt see it i wasnt looking. idk what mtd is im not fimilar with that brand

  • @demonsparkx read the posts, I think I said 5 times that it was an MTD

  • @1skiinIan

I think it says MTD on the side of the mower, correct?

  • what diffrence dose that make

  • why are the shrouds so inportin???

  • @casebutler Run it without shrouds and it will overheat and seize. The shroud guides the hair from the fan on the flywheel past the cooling fins

  • ok reword my last jackass comment i ment if you use your wire brush and some degreaser hahaha

  • you know you can use a wire brush too if you have one on hand and some cleaner and that will get alot of it too from what i learned at least

  • cool vid! I'm partial to the Kohler twins but the old i/c Briggs seem to be pretty well made. I'd definitely take an old opposed over the new v twins anyday!

  • you know you can buy a regulur starter and jsut change the bracket on it

  • i bought a 1998 marruy with a 18hp oppossed twin for 100$ running and mowing

  • compression sounds a bit low

  • very nice idle man.

  • and what brand is the tractor it self?

  • MTD

  • will the motor run with no shrouds?

i bought a 16 hp opposed just like this but it did not come with the shrouds

  • it will run but not for long. it will, and I guarantee it, will overheat and leave you with a pile of junk

  • yeah man dont try to run it without the shroud that will really hurt it

  • what a waste of a motor. slap that on a minibike

  • runs smooth five stars btw i have a 20hp opposed twin it sucks ass i wish it ran this well

  • song?

  • Poor Twisted Me by Metallica

  • sounds like a vw bug running on 2 cylinders

  • metallica needs to hang it up

  • hmm.. the deck isnt on there... straight pipe time!

  • VERY nice video, very well done! Also love the engine, I have two twins, a 16 & a 18 hp. Even though the 16hp runs perfect, I am thinking about putting the 18hp on my JD 116. Any comments about the 16 hp verses the 18hp?

  • nope, but you're going to like the extra hp for sure

  • aint gotta deck we'll take er muddin lol

  • yes it has one

  • hey did it need new gaskets cause i have an 19 hp oposed and i was wandering if i needed to change mine ven if everythings fine

  • always replace them if you take the head off. if it's fine, then there is nothing to fix.

    thanks for watching

  • The deep low idle is why i want one of these engines, the shmuck that I want to buy it from wants $125, and it is in pieces and needs a new coil.

  • that's actually not bad

  • Yeah, that's an alright price. Not too bad, but could be better.

THe coil will cost you alot new though. If you need one, ask around on ebay from people like dragonslayer something (always forget the name) and lynolsoffice. They should be able to help.

  • metallica, nice :)

  • haha, friggin right, just don't report the copyright -.-

  • Comment removed

  • I did and relubed. still makes the same noise

  • ok, then just nice tight gears, no worries

  • i like the sound of these engines,

    nice low idle

  • Them are good engines, but the starters can be a pain to work with

  • do you have a spare starter?

  • yeah, why?

  • i need one but i was j/k

  • and on ever souped up one of these i have a 16hp 694cc from 1983 and have had trouble finding performance parts for it besides my homeade headers

  • that's because it's a waste of time souping them. no one does, therefore, there is no demand for performance parts in the market

  • I have found performance parts for this motor there is a .30 over bore, and performance crank, have this motor in my go kart and can easily reach 80 with it combined with a centrifugal supercharger bored jets and soon to be ported heads

  • I hope it had a cast iron bore. also, do you know how big .030 inches is? it's nothing. you maybe gain 5 ccs for both cylinders

  • enough to gain 1/4hp

  • barely

  • the best damn engine briggs ever made.had to get rid of it because of onan.

  • you know Onan parts are expensive, i got an Onan 1000watts generator, and i needed a new carb float for it , and damn thing cost me

    18 bucks O_O;

  • compared to briggs that pretty cheap.and new onan is even more expensive

  • i dunno about that, HOPEFULLY i don't need a float for the carb on my briggs engines, dunno about my old vintage briggs, it has a float type carburetor on it, and it still runs :knocks on wood:

  • man briggs are su post start better than that

  • set with six clean the piston and the head but I did not ever clean and has always gone

  • can you show us how to trouble shoot an engine? Then rebuild?

  • I would love to but don't have any engines to rebuild. I'm actually getting into snowmobiles, vintage and newer. I have sold most of my tractors. maybe I should make snowmobile repair vids?

  • that would be great.

  • sei fissato con la testae a pulire

  • what?

  • Love the sound of those opposed twin flatties =D

  • everytime i watch i love those opposed twins more and more i miss mine!!!!

  • sounds like it has very little compression, but sweat video,

  • no, it has a fucking ton of it. maybe it sounds like it because of the ultra quiet muffler. I could totally flip it over by doing a wheelie

  • o, nice, did you paint the shroud and stuff or is it just in great shape

  • naw, I don't have time for that kind of stuff. I have actually gottem more into ski doos now

  • o cool i got a phazer with a aftermarket pipe

  • NOW ur talking! LOL!

  • yea, my dad says its scary fast, lol ive had it wide open across a grass field, and i could of swore i was hovering, lol

  • ya I know, they are awesome. one of the fastest things you can legally drive with barely any license :D

  • nice, thanks for this vid, i just got a 16hp twin for my racing tractor, check it out if you want

  • I like how simple that engine is to work on!

  • ya, I know, and it's not a bitch to get to parts like on cars

  • Shit 656cc,

    i have a single cyclinder 17 kohler.

wonder where i could find the amount of cc

mine has...anyone if you know let me know

  • two stroke or four stroke

  • Comment removed

  • Oh sorry, I thought you were talking about the tractor in this video, not paulbreor's Kohler. lol!

  • the cc's on my kohler is 490cc

  • Nicely put together video. Hopefully i'm goning to get a couple of westwood mowers with these engines, so this may well come in handy. 5 stars :p

  • bad asss!!! love the opposed twins

  • how to do you torque it up to specs.i am interested in doing this to one of my ancient mowers and try to bring it back to life

  • Torque in a crisscross pattern upper left lower right upper right or left or right. watch my 8HP 319cc repair. you can see it better there. I think...

  • no clue. but it popped another one, but it just isn't worth fixing. especielly since it has a bit of rod knock too

  • thanks for the help i might have to look into fixing it if i want to sell it lol

  • does your motor make a loud knocking noise when running? i have the same one and it makes a sound like something is hitting the flywheel but it has clearance. can u help me thanks:)

  • jalves/

    bent push rod.

  • it's called rod knock. it's when the surfaces between the crank shaft and rod become worn, then creating a space between them. then when it moves they hit against eachother, causing a knocking sound. the only way to fix it is to replace the crank and rod(s)

  • your a great machanic kid

  • is it stock......if not.....thats a badass engine to make a race mower with

  • I no longer have this anymore. but I wouldn't have raced that tractor because the steering had too much play in it, it was a tall tractor with a high center of gravity, and the deck worked perfect, so it was fine as a lawn tractor

  • lol 16hp? lol my lawn mower has 24hp lol but its on of those heavy duty ones by craftsmen :P

  • lol 24hp? lol my car has 256 hp, but it's one of those good ones by mazda... :P

  • lol... thats how much my moms van by mazda has lmao

  • ya, but, you have missed the fact that a van is almost twice as heavy as a car. power to weight ratio is way higher

  • yea i no... so for the van to have the power of your car it would need to have a 512hp motor or so lol

  • Informative, great job on the work you did and the video. Hmm, this is interesting, I notice that the sound of a opposed twin idling sounds different from a V-twin idling. I think I like the sound of the opposed twin idling better :P

  • the sound an engine makes depends on when each cylinder fires, the exaust system, the size of the cylinders, valve timing and size. so... I like the opposed twins better too :P

  • thamks

  • what are the codes on the shouud on the engine?

  • Model: 402707

    Type: 0241 01

    Code: 86121212

it was in some of the first comments, but i'll post them again

  • what year is that? mines an 82

  • 86.

  • oh srry buddy i thought you wanted it to ride around on

  • yo switch your transmission pulley and your engine pulley and youll do about 50km/h or higher

  • why the fucking hell would I do that? YOU CAN"T CUT LAWNS GOING 50+!!!!!

  • besides, I have a go kart that goes 83KM/H

  • which is 52 mph? idk lol

  • dude my aunti's 8hp victa (frikin old) ride on goes faster than that (i brocke the wheel it was that fast)

  • you don't know anything. A) I bet the cutting deck on mine is almost twice that of your little aunti's

    B)That wasn't even speed 6

    C)That wasn't even full throttle

  • good i was wondering y it was going so slow

  • What kind of spark plugs do you run??

  • NGK why? it doesn't really matter, as long as you get a spark. the strength of the spark comes from your magnito and points.

  • I was just wondering

NGK are what i run to

  • Nice twin. I have the same motor on my '84 sears.

  • Put straight pipes on her and she'll sound better! I got em on my 18 horse!

  • if I put straight pipes on her, the only sound I would be hearing is the sound of my clients complaining about the noise (I mow lawns commercially)

  • o, I see, yea that wouldnt be good. I mow lawns a lil bit in the summer and u would not believe how fussy some people are

  • where did you get the chrome air cleaner cover?

  • it's stock!

  • did you buy the tractor brand new?

  • no. I got it for free and fixed it

  • watch my video with the 8 hp briggs. I shopw you how to do it better there.

  • you alredy said that lol look at some of the first comments.

then I said, "Fucking right!" lol

  • how many CCA does the battery on this tractor have. By The Looks of it might be 340

  • I don't know, I'de have to check. I can answer any question about an engine though...

  • lil brother stole mah tractor

  • ya?
