The main point of this is to realize race is a social concept that is NOT biological what so ever. Race was used to deny others of their freedom and opportunities/resources. This idea allowed the outrageous and terrible argument that people of different physical characteristics are "inferior", which they are not! All are equal! It allowed for social inequality to be seen as natural and be incorporated into laws which affect society's view.
Science to the rescue ! First from stone age religious beliefs and now racism. People have to be brought kicking and scream into the relm of being rational.
i think the debate should be about the use of the word race, since eurpopean colonialism and ideas of eugenics and white supremacy the word race has come to be sinominous with skin pigmentation, whereas before this it simply refered to ones creed, the tribe to which one belongs, due to the legitimate sensitivity over the word race, the prefered term is now population groups, even word ethnicity now carries connertations-this is reflection of biggoted(racist)society, truth is there are100s races not 3!
There is no black or white, we are all variations of brown. Any population isolated for long periods of time and distance will eventually look quite diffrent tfrom each other. This occurs with any animal species.
Split a large group of people into 5 smaller groups. Spead them out over 5 different regions leave for a few thousand generations, with little or no interaction. And you get 5 different looking groups of people.
I am inclined to think that, Ok, there are no races. But, then again, we can find some obvious correlations: dark skin correlates highly with curly hair; green or blue eyes correlates highly with light skin; yellowish skin correlates highly with epicanthic fold (Chinese eyes). Don't these correlations make the concept of 'race' plausible?
@lauragabriel Not necessarily because some Indians can be darker brown and many of them have straight hair. Many people on islands such as Barbados and the Caribbean have green eyes and brown skin. Also maaaaany and I mean many Puerto-Ricans and Guatemalans have "yellow-ish" skin and have more circular eyes compared to thin-almond
We should stop calling our external different colors "race," but we should start calling our differences "flavors," like chocolate, Vanilla, butterscotch, chili, etc. Don't get all worked up, because I am only trying to express how silly racial hangups really are. Damn! Hot nutty fudge, now don't that sound good? LOL! Vanilla dream, mmmmm.
In the film there was an example using mitochondrion DNA to try and show patterns in peoples ancestries leading back to Africa. Mitochondria DNA do not account for noticeable traits. Mitochondria make ATP. As far as evolution goes mitochondria would be a lot slower to change because there alleles do not vary as much and do not relate to survival with as much importance as the alleles in DNA in the nucleus of the cells. Mitochondrion DNA only proves that we all came from one people in Africa.
his is the introduction of a three part series on racism, the biology of racial differences, the history of ethnic migration to America, and the development and current status of racism in America. This documentary is fascinating, humbling, educational, and empowering.
the races are different go back to viking and romans anit no african eva fight out side his country. dont talk shit there will neva be a 100 m white runna eva, all the races are different, white and black dominate heavy weight boxing, mexicans the lower weights its not stupid, if we evolved then of course were different
Truth is,race has no genetic basis, human species have not been around long enough, nor have populations been around long enough to develop into separate subspecies and or races. One should also consider the fact that of the small amount of total human genetic variation, 15% exists within any local population, be they Hispanic, black, Italian, Korean. In other words Two random Koreans are as likely to be genetically different as a Korean and an Italian
i don't believe any race is 'better' than another. I do believe that you can use data to show whatever point of view you want to. There are so many flaws in this kind of stuff. What gene/genes/DNA region are they looking at here. I went to a lecture last week given by a respected expert in this field. Its true there are no races genes identified. What has been shown is that people that have similar origins cluster around certain gene variations and mutations
you can watch the second part.. the results showed that the ppl who thought they would be alike were so different and didnt find any similarities in the genes !
the white guy's DAN was similar to someone who is living in iceland and wasnt similar to any of the other students and so on.
it proves that race is a sociological myth that people created to differentiate between different looking ppl thats all! we defined and created race and thats the whole issue.. and what worse that we cant undo it

"Truth is,race has no genetic basis, human species have not been around long enough to develop into separate subspecies and or races."
How many times a day do you repeat this obvious falsehood to convince yourself that it's true?
"One should also consider the fact that of the small amount of total human genetic variation, 15%..."
Which is exactly the number that geneticists find in mammals routinely divided into subspecies.
