The "strange lettering" was an ASCII cat swinging its arm up and down (look at Resstarr's comment for an idea of how it's supposed to look). It's from the music video for a Touhou fan-song called "Help me, EIRIN!" It involves a lot of chanting "E-rin! E-rin!" while raising your arm on the "E" and lowering it on the "rin".

There's a graphic on the Touhou Wiki that shows exactly what your hitbox is. Don't feel bad about checking it, because the hitbox isn't really intuitive.

Ahem. Well, Eirin. She's from the moon, which means just about nothing, really, except she has silver hair and lives forever, and she likes medicine. Like... -really- likes medicine. She's continually doing tests on moon rabbits (aside from Reisen, surprisingly) and actually sells various medicines to people in Gensokyo after the events of Imperishable Night.

And yes, if you stood on a single pill too long, it would turn into a fuzzy like if it hit the bottom.

Yeah, drill-stomping the blue segments moves the pills left/right. The red segments freeze the pills in position temporarily, and the yellow segments can be bounced off like chain-chomps/thwomps etc. They're useful for getting the height you need right at the end.
