I hate to be the heavy here, but I'm fairly certain your first assumption (that it was a flashlight) was correct. I stayed at the same hotel on the nights of the 6th & 7th, and was on the second floor. The route that the light takes is the exact route that is patroled by the Alamo grounds security crew. I saw them out side my window several times until I went to bed at midnight.
@misticrystal, I would agree, but where it starts is above the Alamo, if it was a flashlight it would have been projected on the menger, and then on the top of the alamo. It doesn't come to a rest in Alamo plaza until later. A security guard in the plaza would need to be really tall, or flying to make that initial "projection." He couldn't have started the light above the Alamo, and then across it's top from "in the plaza", that's why I find this so strange.
