While she is certainly more informed, educated and talented than 95% of pop stars, I still find her affected and immature - hipster, bohemian thing that smacks of a little superiority for taking the "artists path." It is common enough in teenagers and 20 year olds - they are, in effect, always on, always performing and acting in a way that says, "Hey, who is watching me, am I cool enough?" Her interview with Nick Spitzer was full of, "Oh yea, like, yea..." I liked her unti I heard her speak.
Jolie is a star - saw her play in a barn in North Yorkshire UK last year - she didn't do this one but she did sign a CD for me -she was happy to chat for a while - albeit she did not know what day it was or where she was - we both agreed that nick cave was "amazing" and she agreed that the pogues were cool
@bopplayer her music is not really really Appalachian sounding at all...she's too spread thin across many influences to hear much of an appalachian sound. She's just a singular and unique artist that cannot be labeled. Listen to some more Appalachian music and then see if you stand by your previous statement because it's fraught with problems.
@harybosco maybe not Appalachia exactly, but early America. Nothing wrong with any artist that is influenced by those that came before them. It's inescapable. First song of her's I heard was: "Moonshiner" tell me that doesn't draw up scenes of yesterday Kentucky hooch stills? was profound to listen to her so I bought the disc the next day.
@bopplayer I agree she has a reverence for the past, but i'd say it's more of a broad appreciation. She's not gimmicky enough to be labeled as someone "beamed here from 85 years ago" and in any way sounding like the past. There are elements of "old timey" music in her music, yes, but they are woven like a tapestry to form her cunning artistry. "Moonshiner" surely conjures up images of Kentucky hooch stills but the song's musicality is hardly depicting the music of Appalachia.
@harybosco hmmm I thought Kentucky was in the Appalchian or near the region. I'm saying she's influenced by early America old timey, you are saying: "woven in a tapestry" you put a nicer bow on the same meaning and I salute you. It's a lot like Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, all that rocking you can still hear echos of the 50's rockabilly guys that influenced him. As I can hear old time in her influences. Look nobody is completely original. It's near impossible, too much has been done already.
the guy who made it pulled it as far as i know. i contacted him to see if i could get a copy and he said he might put it online again at some stage...
@katmaidog That seems a bit unnecessary. I don't agree that her ending is too abrupt either but I don't think the observation was intended to be malicious.
the crush I have on this woman is heretofore unknown on earth. Talent is sexy as hell.

Jolie is like an old timey folk appalachian singer beamed here from 85 years ago. I love her style.

@bopplayer no she's just jolie holland
harybosco 1 year ago
@harybosco of course she is Jolie Holland however her influences are obvious. Just as one can tell where Natalie Cole is coming from.

Thanks, forgot about that song, she should end it better rather than just stop dead like that, but I still love her voice.

Yeah...you actually DO know better how this song should be sung than Jolie Holland does.
Where were you when we all needed you?

In the midst of all of this profusion
The bus pulls up to take me back home
The bus driver looks like an African prince
The babies have tears in their eyes
And I feel like a queen
On this sunny city bus
Look what you've done to me

's a beautiful morning in the ghetto
Finer than the day before
The ants are crawling over my pants as if to say
They know where the honey is
There's really old roses blooming in the ghetto
Birds of paradise are taller than me
The weeds grow high, the birds flicker by
Children are walking to school

the words are wonderful! here you go:
Im floating with the birds
I'm talking to the weeds
Look what you've done to me
I'm still dressed up from the night before
Silken hose and an old Parisian coat
And I feel like a queen at the bus stop on the street
Look what you've done to me
