its a fact that Top of the Pops prefered bands to use the recorded album version of their track, some times vocals were done live, other times not. check out the infamous Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit performance on Top of the Pops where Kurt deliberately takes the mocks this fact by play guitar falsely and mock singing to the camera in an ironic way.
