  • what's better, rit or tulip permanent fabric dye?

  • @DrewSoNEEDS

i would say the TULIP has a nicer and fuller color outcome...

  • Id use rit dye but they look pastel, dont dig it. i used kit dye and very good results came of it. i cant afford procion and i know that because i cant even afford kit dye. thats what draws me to rit. but maybe not now unless i start liking pastel tie dyes. thanks for vid man!

  • Wow I thought i was doin. It wrong cause I'm a beginner but in 2 weeks time I've been doing advanced folds and my shirts look nice and a have a tie die lab with all the esstentials but any way, I use rit dye as well and I kind of get a weird kinda of pastel water color look just like yours there but some are more vibrant but I wonder why rit die makes such watercolor looking colors

  • do you pre soak your shirts in soda ash?

what are your tips on gettin more color onto the shirt? everytime i make tie dye i always get alot of white spots :/ and last questions...how long can you keep the dye unused thats already mixed?

  • @mihimeeproductions

I do pre soak in soda ash - for these Procion dyes. Some dyes do not need that though...

Sometimes white areas are just too thick of a fold, or the dye just did not reach deeply enough.

Maybe slow down the apllicatioin and allow more time to soak into deep layers, or re-apply over that area a second time.

I keep mine up on a rack, so if I soak too much, it drips off and does not pool.

  • @WolfEchoes

Also, the Procion dye I would only keep 24 hours or so...

As soon as the soda ash goes in, they begin to break down.

RIT and other types may last longer - but fresh is always brightest.

I always waste a bit of dye in the end - but I try to have "flag" material around just to use up the extra...

  • hello again, I wanted to let you know, I use a hot method with rit dyes. soak dyables in borax and water for a few hours. I soak for at least a day. I use 2-3 packets, salt, 1 gallon of water, heat to steaming do dip method tiedying. set in cold water, untie rinse. I get very bright sharp tied and dyed that doesnt fade terribly fast. good for rayon, cotton, and cotton hemp. love the procion dyes, but some projects I still use the rit dyes. thanx for the video

  • nice demonstration. I use the vat cooking method, both tulip, and rit tyes, but will go to procion dyes this summer since my little business is now demanding Teeshirts. I am wondering how the procion dyes would be for vat dying. I do other clothes and items that will still be dyed with my grocery store dyes, but preferre vat dying to using the squeeze bottles.

  • @bassbugg7

These Procion dyes should work great in the vat.

You will find the color way brighter and deeper than RIT or Dylon, and a bit better than Tulip. A few more ingredients with Procion - but very well worth the effort.

    Great luck to you!

  • I dyed the jeans with the Dylon COLD Dye and it turned out RED!!! It was a really nice result! :)

  • I want to colour my jeans, they are white, but I want to apply a permanent colour and hopefully get a satisfying colour.

I heard that Dylon was good, but what's your opinion on Dylon? Also, how much packages would I need?

Any tips for maximum coverage that would be great.

  • @tylermoore

If you want a solid colour - changing the white to another colour... it would be best to make enough dye to let the jeans soak in it completely. You would want to saturate the material completely and evenly for one solid color effect.

Four liters of dye maybe... about 30 ounces in a liter.

Dylon is ok, but the Procion are far brighter dye. You may try to soak the jeans in a pot, and heat the pot up so the jeans and dye reach steam, stirring as you wait.

  • @WolfEchoes

I have 3 sets of Dylon Mexican Red Cold Water Dye, this stuff does not come with a fixative, which I am going to get but, you said something about procion, what does that mean/do?

  • @tylermoore

Procion is a diifernt type of dye mix. The Procion MX is a way brighter and nicer dye than any others. BUt they are a bit more expensive, a bit more work... and harder to get. Dylon is ok, but you will love these Procion.

  • how do i have to use the procion mx dye????and btw. do you know how idye works???

  • @MRfliptrick

You might want to try a kit first.

It is a box of dye and bottles and gloves...

Tulip is one company that makes them.

They are a good way to get the feel for dying.

Go on FaceBook if you can; view "Addicted To Tie Dying".

There are some hints there on using these dyes, and others.

  • @WolfEchoes alright,thanks.i´ve already had a dye kit.

  • i used rit dye and i just made 3 shirts, and put them up in plastic bags. how long do i wait to rinse it?

  • @metallhedz

Hope it worked out for you!

I used to staem or heat my RIT dyes in the bag for a bit...

You will find the Procion type dyes are way brighter than the RIT...

    Cool on you! Happy dying...

  • okey thanks a lot

  • does soda ash help the dye stay better on the fabric instead of bleeding at the washer? what is the average ration between powder dye and water to get a solution that sticks best and does not bleed?

  • @alexi96

With these dyes, the soda ash acts as a "bond"... allowing the dye to become permanent - with salt also.

Not all dyes need the soda ash, but most of the higher end dyes do.

There are also fixing agents you can buy that will help some other dyes be more permanent.

I over concentrate my dyes, and let them sit an extra day tied up before rinse. It helps - but there is always some runoff.

The better the dye, usually the better the final result.

  • wow thank you very much for the video. this was really interesting to watch. learned a few tips even. thank you very much

  • How do i make the dye on my shirts i dyed not bleed when i put them in the washer for the first time?

  • The dye needs to set into the shirt material. Maybe you are not mixing them quite right, or maybe they need more time tied up or heat applied for those dyes to become one with the fabric. (Addicted To Tie Dying on FaceBook may have help too)

    100% cotton is also best.

  • This guy is so cool.

  • hey which one would you say is best to dye black!! i want to dye a cotton dress thats multi-colored to black

  • I like the Procion the best for any colour... it is deep, bright and steady.

The RIT can be ok, but I find it sometimes grainy and not as easy to mix "smooth".

I have also watered down fabric paint and dyed, which worked ok but is too much work.

If you can find PROCION, use that (Maiwa Hand Prints).

  • Procion looks very professionally done. But I have to say, the kit dye is not bad looking at all. But like the man says, the amount of dye is a rip-off if you want to make saturated hues. Nice vid. Thanks.

  • Nice job on this video. Nice explanations of the different dye products you have available to you. I only use procion dyes, best on the market.

  • THE KIT DYES ARE TERRIBLE,they dont include the soda ash in the kit and the colors fade every time after you wash them,i saw the rit dyes at publix a couple of days ago and i had never seen them before, and the procion dyes always come out bright, although i tend to mek mistakes and some colors come out muddy

  • @ajajajskates

Lol, the kit dyes aren't terrible at all. They skip the soda ash step, you know, the one where you sit your shirt in a CAUSTIC solution for 30 minutes and have ot use gloves to get it out or it will burn your hands? I've had shirts I've washed for months and the color barely fades.
