  • Can anyone tell me what songs he is playing? I can't tell from his accent.

  • Holy shit, that's one hell of an organ.

  • No s**t! I am trembling from the sheer sonic energy coming out of my computer. Who needs Starbuck's!

  • Why not make a video of the whole concert? Watching him play is vastly more interesting than just listening to the CD.

  • Magnificent.

  • Incredible performance. What is the name of the piece that sounds like a massive finale at the end of the video?

  • @GrandOphicleide Charles Marie Widor - Toccata of the 5th Symphonie

Liszt - Evocation de la chapelle sixtine

    Widor - Allegro 6th Symohonie

  • I listen to and watch this video before I go to work, just about every morning of the world. I need to hear this, as it charges my batteries for the day......lol

  • I just LOVE his tempo on the Widor toccata, it's sublime!

Are there any recordings of him playing the whole piece on this organ?

  • @advisorC101 well... you could buy the cd from jav recordings!

  • @ch604, I have this CD. I'm talking about making a new CD. and btw, you can play fast in this space. Listen to Daniel Roth.

  • Astonishing voices from one of the world's greatest cathedrals and one of Cavaille-Coll's most memorable masterpieces. This is an impressive document which records beautifully the majesty and glory of this fabulous instrument and very talented organist. High marks all around in the capture of such grand and elevating detail. *****

  • I have the CD. And it is great. We dont' see many organs here in the U.S. with self-moving keys anymore. Franz Liszt has given me some improvising ideas. By watching this, I have learned how to make a quick run down the manuals. Thank you Vincent!

  • @Streetcar1743

The reason the keys appear to move on their own is because the pedals and the manual he is playing on are coupled to the other manuals via the coupler stops. It's a bit distracting when playing also, but you get used to it. :))

  • @lrover03

Thanks for the update. It is neat to see organs with self moving keys because of historic reasons. The reason why I say that is becase you don't see this on organs these days!

  • An intimate serenade of the majesty at St. Sulpice in waves of royal sound from this Cavaille-Coll masterpiece.

  • I see in the 6th symphonie "extract" and the Evocation À La Chapelle Sixtine the pedals are coupled to every manual except the 'recit'.

I see this quite allot when I watch videos of Daniel Roth, can anyone explain to me why?

  • The Recit is on the 4th Manual.

  • Ah.. I see. Thank you Johannes.

  • Haha, you welcome, even thoe it was not really the answer for your question.

    The manuals are

    Solo

    Recit

    Postifif

    GO

    GC

I could have asked Sophie when I was a t Sulpice but I saw your comment to late! Sorry!

  • Rewind!!!!!

  • Is Vincent Dubois related in any way to Theodore Dubois?

  • Vincent Dubois and the Cavaillé-Coll Organ are fantastic! Watching the coupled keyboard and pedals is awesome! Thanks for this post!!

  • Excellent organ, excellent organist, excellent video!!! Thank you so much!

Wow. It's my dream to play here or in Notre Dame. Thank you for making me feel a little bit closer to this organ!!

    -Thomas.

  • Wow! That really shook me up!

  • JV I think we need some more recordings on the works of C.M. Widor on this organ and Mr Dubois is the perfect choice for such a job. Really I heard Widor and Roth's own recordings but this is something very special, magical and magnificent, especially at the beginning and at the end.

  • that is one powerful piece

  • Please can you tell me the name oof the piece of pipe organ that play on the start of this video??

    From minutes 0:12 to 0:49

    Many Many TKS

  • Toccata from the 5th organ symphony by C.M. Widor

  • Brilliant young organist

  • Why in the hell do clowns like ahmelmahe get on Youtube simply to bitch at everyone else's performance? Oh, and compare them unfavorably to their won. If I hated the playing as much as they claim, I wouldn't waste my time trying to inform the populace about the do's and don'ts of Tutti or how THEY played the same instrument. Jeez!

I heard Dubois in a concert the other night - favulous as usual.

  • well we all know the answer tgo that question don't we hey ?

  • If my memory serves me right, Daniel Roth used Tutti for the ending of this piece when I saw him last summer on the same organ...so I would check yourself ahmelmahe

  • For the guy Bitching about how loud the organ is, Vincent mentions he will demonstrate the TUTTI and that is what is sounds like.....Fool......to all other who complain.....where's your recording? Lets see you try..

  • Cool!!!!!

  • Now if we could replace Cameron Carpenter with Vincent Dubois, I think we'd be better off, Dubois's playing shows much greater maturityy than does Carpenter's.

  • the sound of true power

  • Interesting to compare Mssrs Dubois and Roth's tempo and overall style of playing the same Widor 6th Final. Of course the ever magnificent Cavaille-Coll instrument sounds as spectacular as always. I don't know why this piece isn't more universally loved as it is so stunning when played with such vigor and drive as these two gentlemen do.

  • Dubois is the ABSOLUTE CAT'S MEOW, people!

We heard him live at Baylor University in Waco this year---he played Franck's (UTTERLY DREADFUL) "Grande Piece Symphonique," the Durufle Suite, and Widor VI---all completely by memory---and it was UNBELIEVABLE!

(EVERYBODY---who is ANYBODY---plays by memory, you know!)

The above commentary---about Franck---is editorial; I've just NEVER liked Franck.

Heresy---I know---as---I'm an ORGANIST---and of Flemish extraction. Vincent Dubois ROCKS!

    Martin

  • You're dreadful, not Franck. Anyone who can fail to appreciate the beauty of the Prelude, Fugue and Variations, or the sheer genius and grandeur of Choral no. 3 is a sad excuse for a human being. Franck was way better than any of his contemporaries, like Widor or Guilmant.

  • Listen to Franck's Prelude, Fugue et Variation, thats what got me to like Franck, particularly the recording of it by Xaver Varnus here on Youtube.

  • I hear you. But with me---well---there's one consistant compositional flaw---inherent in all 12 (13) organ pieces Franck wrote:

every thing he wrote is OVER one page on length!

AND the "Final" in B Flat" is the best piece he wrote, because it's only 4 pages long...!

    HEe hEe HEe

In other words, it's all SUCH long winded literature that I have a hard time sitting still through it...!

    Martin

  • Allo, Vincent!

    Ton chere ami

    Martin Gemoets

    Irving, Texas

  • whats up with the guys on the side? are they assisstants or bodayguards or the audience or what?

  • They're probably students ----and may indeed be console assistants/registrants...

    Martin

    The Queen of Sheba

  • they are bodyguards yes, lol :]

"don't ya dare to touch the stops or the keys or i'll give you a slap in the face.. cooker!"

    haha :)

  • Sainht-Sulpice is my church, and I can tell you they are body-gards, because hundreds of people would kill in order to play only one minute on this organ.( Me too)

And many american tourists holding "Da Vinci Code" in hand told us that a crime was committed in this church by a monk, so we believe it.

  • They aren't bodyguards, The gentleman wearing the white shirt is is Michel Goussu the currator of the organ but I don't know who the other man is probably an assistant.

  • Sorry I made a mistake, the man wearing the white shirt is Johann Vexo who is just an assistant and the other man with the glasses is Michel Goussu.

  • Johann Vexo is organist at Notre-Dame of Paris, titulary of Nancy's Cathedral and organ teacher at Angers's conservatory... Vincent Dubois is one of his friend.

  • Thats good to know, thank you.

  • Vexo's position at Notre-Dame is Substitute for the Choir Organ.

  • exactly :-)

  • what is the name of the last song?

  • Widor's 6th syphony the last part of it. If you want to hear the full version type in the search bar daniel roth playing widor the 6th and watch him do it on this organ :)

  • Although I do like Mr Dubois tempo better.

  • In case you don't know there arent many recordings like this and even this one is just a demonstration of the full recordings on the CD not to mention that there are very few recordings on YT with Widors 6th symphony or Mr. Dubois.

  • you just should not have say anything :(

  • if its his opinion ;)

  • Yes you're right:) But I wonder what it would sound like on the Passau Cathedral organ. The one that Daniel roth played was absolutely briliant!

  • PS: this is a refence to the Recording of Daniel Roth's video at St. Sulpice playing widor's 6th symphony.

  • This is stunning...JV, we need more of Vincent Dubois performing more Widor at St. Sulpice

on your wonderful sounding SACD's!!!! PLEASE!!! PLEASE!!! PLEASE!!!

  • Fabulous! I'd love to shoot a video of this man at work, I love the guy standing in the foreground, trying to be invisible!

  • ooh now I understand. there are keys for legs too

  • yes that is what an organ is. You play with the feet too!

  • can someone explain me what he do with his legs? I don't think its 100% same as the piano

  • That is so Dramatically Beautiful!! I had a tear, I don't know why!

  • Good tempo on Widor's Toccata

  • It's the CORRECT tempo, by the way.

  • I agree, that's how Widor play it, I play it a hair faster, I like this tempo better though

  • He's playing a part closer to the end of the first movment. (i think)

    :)

  • yh, he is, its the final part of the first movement.

  • Great player indeed..... Great instrument as well....

  • Not great............................AMAZING!!

  • I got the CD for my birthday. Now I am ready for Vincent Dubois to teach me how to play the "Evocation Chapule du Sistina". LOL!!

  • Its pretty easy to play, but he's playing it twice the speed it should be, the whole piece is 20 minutes long, and i'm soo lucky that I found Vincent, otherwise I would've brought the sheet music for it.

  • This piece should NOT be recorded for the next 100 years. [Widor Toccata from symphonie V}

  • But that's not what this piece is.

  • WOW!

  • Not only is it great to see this video clip, but can you actually imagine being there, experiencing the power of a truly large pipe organ which no electronic organ can ever reproduce. I have played a couple of very large organs in the past, and it is a real rush to experience the power of such organs. - - hottrod - Rockford, IL. USA

  • my favirit organ pice! = )

  • Magnificent sound of one of the organ masterpieces!

  • il est compeletement megalo! un peu de modestie!

  • Oui, c'est assez vrai :)

  • Wish i could play like him

  • In case if anyone wants to know, the CD sells for #30.00. It would be a nice Christmas present. I have found out what SACD means. That means Super Audio CD. But my PC won't burn SACDs. Mine burns regular CDs.

  • This CD is a special duel layer CD - basically there are 2 CDs on one CD surface - one layer is a normal CD and the other an SACD. It will play on either machine. I hope you will not be burning copies - the sales from current CDs is how I finance future CDs.

  • Hey Joe,

I saw the list and I was proud to see the CD is now on the website. Now I am just about ready to have Vincent "teach" me now to play the symphonic poem. If they do some work on the organ again, I hope that they let the manuals on this one operate the way they do right now. This organ takes people on a field trip back in time when electronic coupling was invented.

  • Great work Vince. Keep it up.

  • I have to listen to this video every morning while having my first cup of coffee. I just ordered this CD as it's now available and can't wait to receive it.

  • I just received my CD and it is so fantastic -- I have it playing most of the time I'm on the compuer. There is NOTHING like it!! BRAVO!

  • Franz Liszt was a passionate man, he wrote and played accordingly.

  • Faster doesn't mean better

  • @eoghdes18 you cant play that fast in such a space, theres no way you would be able to tell what notes are being played in the sanctum! too much echo!

  • Wow! That really shook me up! It's very refreshing to hear somebody play the organ like you. Keep on rockin' buddy!

  • I was hopignt on getting a copy of the newest CD including the one that was recorded on this orgtan. If the CD is out, where can I go and get a copy?

  • Vincent DuBois is the NEW great organist of our time! His understanding of the music and the technique he uses are extraordinary. We anxiously await the CD of the full performance of this evening's session at St. Sulpice. NOBODY plays like this anymore -- I think this is the way the composers intended these works to sound... BRAVO!

  • But I'm totally fascinated sound of Introduction from 6th symphony (g minor) on this organ! Very good (and loud, hahah) recordings of these works are from MC Alain. I'm sure you'll like it!

  • giafin, at the very beginning of the video, you heared Toccata from 5th symphony (Widor). It sounds unique, because Widor was organist in St. Sulpice!

  • Magnificent!! Vincent Dubois is a genius.

He could make any organ sound this good.

  • Extraordinary! But I would also like to know what is the music played at the very beginning of the video. I cannot really recall its composer's name & the title of the work itself.

Any help it will greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Giacinto

  • widors toccata is the music giafin, it is from his 5th symphony.

  • very good!

  • When is this new CD coming out? I have to have it now. How can one find recordings from this great church and organ????? These are incredible sounds.

  • Great!!!

  • Vincent is not only an amazing musician, but those who have had the good fortune to meet and work with him know that he's a very down-to-earth fellow and quite easy to get along with. Quelle combinaison rare.

Also, his performance of the Widor G Minor is my favorite...

  • Dubois is so cool and collected all the while making my blood boil. Hooray for the French!

  • It's hard to call St. Patrick's small, especially with the V/150 Kilgen. Fantastic Cavaille-Coll, I love the French style instruments

  • Wow amazing, does anyone know the name of the two pieces he is playing?

  • The first one is The Evocation Of The Sistine Chapel by Franz Liszt, and the second is the first movement of Widor's 6th Symphony.

  • I never tire from listening to this video. Why don't American organs sound like this? The new organ at The First Congregational Church in Los Angeles is a great instrument but needs to be in a great cathedral. The church is way too small for the organ.

  • Huge churches lots of hard surfaces. Saint Sulpice is HUGE it makes Saint Patrick's Cathedral in NYC look small.

  • hi, je crois que je le connais; auriez-vous son email adresse, car je crois que c'est bien lui avec qui j'allais a l'ecole! Where can i find where he has gone to school, which part of France, to make sure it's him? Cause i havent seen him for more than 10 years, and people change, thank you, Angelique.

  • magnifique mais change de chemise!

  • azzzztig!!!!

  • Truly, a religious experience for me to see and hear this incredible music in this space, on this pipe-organ. Where can one find recordings of this kind of music? I must have it.

  • My CD company - JAV Recordings - will be releasing this SACD/CD in June or July. Watch pipeorgancds. com

  • Thanks you. I already receive emails from JAV Recordings and I can't wait.

  • bloody amazing

  • Oh yes, pretty well done. I Think he's some of the greatest organists we have on our planet. Awesome!

  • Really awesome sound from a very talented Organist

  • Oh the power of that organ!

  • Thesurfinbird, the action you see is what is called Keyboard dubbing. When the organist plays a note, the key on the manual above or bellow it plays itself. Which ever manual he has coupled.

  • The Best Pipe Organ on Earth! Played by a Great Organist.

  • Liszt and the first movement of Widor's 6th Organ Symphony.

  • Which two pieces of music are the ones that he plays? I may put them in a recital i am doing

  • I sure would love to get a chance to play that ORGAN!

  • Someday, when I visit Paris, I would love to get a chance to play that ORGAN!!!

  • For those who don't know how to pronouce the name of the piece of music by Liszt, listen to Vincent as he talks about the video.

  • Ah Joe, make that the ones with me at the organ and the one at my synthesizer.

  • Hey Joe, if you want to, email my videos to Vincent and also to Daniel Roth. I assume that they would love to see it.

  • I've learned something. I went to a website that talks about Franz Liszt, and I have learned that the piece was really written for orchestra. It was an orchestral job, and I was suprised that "Classical Music Archives" didn't have it listed.

  • You may have to help me on this one JV.

  • FRANZ LISZT (1811-1886)

Evocation à la Chapelle Sixtine (1862)

  • Oh thanks. I might have to go the library to rent a CD with this song on it. But it sure does keep an organists' hands and feet pretty busy!!

  • Uh, oh. I can't find the piece by Liszt in the Classical archives under the Liszt page. And I need help.

  • My goof on the spelling of the composer. It's Liszt.

  • Uh, oh! I can't find that piece in the Classical Archives site. I looked under Listz but I couldn't find the piece. I could see chamber music, symphonies, and piano works. And I know that this piece was done on the organ.

  • The next time you see Vincent, see if you can get him to play "Piere a Notre Dame" and Prelude Classic Style.

  • My video of "At the Organ" has stills on this one as well. But unlike this one, mine is just the stills rather than with motion.

  • Joe, you might want to compare this one with one that I just uploaded. Type "At the Organ". And you will see at first some stills of me with my hands at the manuals and it finishes with my feet on the pedals.

  • Thank you JV. I will watch for it. Dan has also taught us some French as well. I have learned from him that instead of using the word "Organ", they say "orgue". I hope that he is still living. If he is and you get to see him again, tell him that we viewers of YouTube thank him for teaching us some new words.

  • I found out what the name of the first piece is. It's a tonal poem from Lizt. Too bad we couldn't hear the entire piece. But it does sound nice when he changes the stops.

  • THe SACD/CD will be available for purchase in 2 months.

  • Wow - what a stonking sound and a great treat to see this stuff on YouTube. Thank you!!!!

  • Okay, this is for someone who knows the history of organs. When did the preset buttons start getting mounted underneath the manuals? Also when did the type of keyboard dubbing come to an end? Similar to the keyboard dubbing seen in this video?

  • I have been keeping the message of keeping these historic organs in operation at the top of the page on the Yanni Message Board.

  • Now what is the first piece that he is playing in the video?

  • One neat thing about this instrument is that not too many organs are left that have manual dubbing. That is when you couple the Swell to the great, the note on the swell manual plays by itself as the organist strikes it on the great.

  • The organ itself was built in 1862 and the church where it sits has a petition going to help preserve the instrument as most organs built by Cavaille Coll are in danger of being scrapped. I like these historic organs as well.

  • In response to your inquriy, the last piece was from the first movement of the sixth symphony by Charles Marie Widor.

  • This is simply amazing. What is the last piece that is performed on this video? I wish I knew what it was; I'd run out and place an order for it right away.

All my years of organ playing, I have never played a French Organ like this, though I know I'd love to. Got to love those French organ reeds.

  • Me, being an organ buff for decades, it is good to see talented organists on great organs such as Daniel Roths' wonderfull organ in Paris!

Living in south Texas , I don't get to attend organ recitals too much, but over the years I have seen many such as Virgil Fox, E.Power Biggs, Pierre Cochereau, Anthony Newman, Guy Bovet, Jane Parker-Smith, Lionel Rogg. I especially like French organ music from the late 19th-20th century. This is nothing on this earth that compare to pipe organ music!!

  • Yes, I live in Austin now and music like this doesn't even exist here. I lived in L.A. for 16 years and got to hear the new organs at First Congregational Church but the church is far too small for organs that size. I love to hear English organ and choir music, but the French are grand too. I wish I knew where to find music on CDs like this. Does anyone know?

  • Many recordings of French, English, US and Spanish organs playing music of many composers & periods are available at larger music stors or from OrganHistoricalSociety. com. French, English and SOme US compasers produced music of this dynamic and tonal range. German and Scandnavian mostly baroqie which is not co perfectly clear on an organ with so much reverb.

  • Bravissimo Organ-Player !!

  • Does anybody know the name of the blond guy please ? He sits on the side of the organist during the performance. I thought I saw him playing the organ at Notre Dame de Paris...

  • If you mean the gentleman with glasses who assists with the stops and turns a page during the Liszt, that man is Michel Goussu who is the curator of the organ, and I believe, choir director at St.Sulpice. I believe he an organist himself as well.

  • Not that one but the one with blondish hair who sits on the other side of the organist. He's not doing much in this clip. Thank you

  • very nice

  • Et Théodore Dubois est-ce parent avec vous !?

  • Belle présentation. Avec Widor on se trompe pas.
