jeff was an awsome singer but don dokken was higher pitch ,broad range and wrote all those favorites......he might not have held on to those traits due to smoking and leading that lifestyle for 30 years!!!
Wow. Amazing singer Jeff Pilson is. Sad he's now playing boring bass lines in the current Foreigner Band. He's an amazing singer and should have his own band....gotta pay the bills though. There are side man like this all over that are overshadowed....so goes the band biz.
In the wake of the recently failed Dokken reunion, George, Jeff and Mick are forming a band called Tooth and Nail. The album is called Dump the Chump and they are going to do some old Dokken classic and some new songs. I personally can't wait to hear it.
WOW, impressive, jeff shoulda sang more, i like this version a lot, 1 of the few unplugged songs i actually like, but would rather hear em plugged back in , this song needs the raw shreddin punch ;()
By the way, during the "Blackout" recording Don had middle parts, high parts were reserved for Jeff. He's really a very good singer, the band "Pilson" with him doing the vocals and Don and George shredding would be really fun back in the 80s.
@cosborn73 don is better in every direction. He has an outstanding tremolo, probably the best and a unmistakeble voice...and mutch power.::| just listen and compare
@LuckyInJuly If you can still by the dvd/cd Don is the one who got him to sing. He was trying to get George to sing this one.. But..... Mick sings one too.
@fordwheeler All of these guys are amazing musicians. It is too bad that the thing that basically made it big for these guys (MTV) basically now haunts them. Dokken is lumped in as a "hair band" which is terrible because people tend to look past the music which is timeless and still stands up today. Instead they focus too much on the dated clothing and such. These songs being "semi-acoustic" shows how brilliant they truly are.
I think Jeff has a way better voice for rock music than Don. I have a War and Peace cd with Jeff on lead vocals, and this dude is for real. Killer voice.
such a better singer then don,not surprised he left! Was a great band but never got into them when they were together because don's voice couldn't hold up live!
I don't understand the term "Hair Metal" Long hair and big hair have been around since the 60's just look at Robert Plant..Androgyny and rock have been around since the 50's just look at Little Richard. The guys in the 80's were just carrying on the tradition.Long hair and rock n roll are like peanut butter and jelly.
Marty Balin from Starship had Jeff singing lead vocal in a side project of his called Rock Justice...kind of a neo-meatloaf broadway musical thing...pre Dokken. Juan Crucier from Ratt was Dokken's orig bass player.
jeff is so good i really feel he's quite a bit better than john dokken-jeff pilson's project band also did some great stuff in the late 90's-He also did vocals pro bono for a friend of mine who did a song to raise money for autism awareness-seems like an awesome guy!
pilson is a great singer!!!!!!! better than Don ---more soul and range!!!! Nice guy too... my sister met him with Foreigner on plane and he was the nicest guy...JEFF PILSON IS THE SHIT...please do another with Lynch
My hardcore Dokken friend got this DVD years back and the only thing I liked then was this one. The song is just amazing but Jeff singing makes it........great. I have the first albums on both european and US versions and now I'm bound to Listen to PILSON not dokken.
at a Foreigner concert, early this year, i was swimming around in the pool, and this guy comes in sort of smiles, then goes in the workout room that you can see from the pool... i kept swimming, and about a half hour later he comes out, all sweaty and stuff and says hi and asks how the water is. i say its good, then he's like ok, and leaves. later that night, while i was watching the concert, i realized that that was Jeff. it was my first concert, and i had already met one of them. it was cool.
Jeff Pilson is a cool dude and very talented too. I went to a Dokken show right after they reformed in 95 (I think). Jeff was the only one to come outside, talk with the fans, and sign a few autographs. Everyone else stayed on the bus and didn't want to come outside.
@JosephKuby, ya juan was the origonal bassist for dokken. he was on the album breaking the chains but left for ratt afterwards. but ya you are right juan also did some singing, i love ratt but stephen isnt a very talented singer, athough ratt wouldnt sound loke ratt without him
Jeff has always been an awesome singer. Keep in mind this video is 15 years old. Years ago I saw Dokken several times and each time Jeff sang most of the songs.
I just saw them again two weeks ago and the only original member was Don. It was not good. He sang several octaves lower than the originals but hey, at least he admitted that he sucked anymore. Gotta remember Don is 57 years old now and he had a drink and cigarette in his hand the whole show.
The best song ever sung by a better singer. What did Don bring into the band except the nasal voice. Mick Jeff and G coulda done better without the "Frontman"
Sounds great i have always been a huge fan of anything Lynch has ever done Great stuff Jeff wow very impressive anyone know if they will be playing in the nor cal area
i will tell you a short story. i played with jeff when he was in his teens. he was a more competent musician than the rest of us, but good humor. so, one of the times when the drummer and i were trying to get some vocal part, jeff popped out a very nice bit. we just stared at him and said "why don't you sing", and he said, "i'm saving my voice". he told me that when he got out of high school he was going to california and join some established band. more to the story, but he did what he said
I just fucking HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE the super-slow-motion film effects while Lynch plays his solo. Apparently, that artsy-fartsy approach is supposed to be...what? Original? Staggering? Impressive??? Often-times, people in film editing...just don't "get it!!!!" Arrrghhhh!!!!!! Talk about fully screwing up a glorious moment in guitar history by one of Rock's Finest!!!!
Yeah, but still we must not forget about how many songs Don wrote for use. I mean, lets not mentally dance gay twacky (like the dancers in the Elton JOhn video of I still stand, where they balletically jumped and posed a shot in the air for the gusto of the happy moment (which I do like that song fo Elton) But seriously you guys. Mimicking and sounding like others is not KING
Better than Don himself. He is with Foreigner now. I saw them a couple years ago - great musicians. Better than ever - very tight. I agree about Dokken having their shit together - love em
That was spectacular. I've always loved this band and they are one of the most influential, talented and creative bands to come out of the "Hair" Metal Craze of the 80's and early 90's. I don't even refer to them as "Hair," since Don, Jeff, Mick & George are all true musicians, and not posers or whatever, like that dorky band Warrant. Dokken has always had their shit together and I'm happy to see they are happy with who they have always been.
I agree, Dokken never was a Hair band at all In terms of Musical Style, they were More a Melodic Hard Rock band with atmospherics thrown in, however for the Under Lock and Key album they had to put on the glam image to blend in with the rest, as for Warrant, well I actually did enjoy the Cherry Pie Record so i cant really say they were exactly dorky, that title would have to go to poison (granted Poison does have a decent guitarist but thats about it, most of their songs are forgettable)
@ HopNPop, who didnt know Jeff had the Pipes????? For more Jeff Vocals, check out the War and Peace stuff, he did all lead vocals and had Russ Parrish (Fight, Atomic Punks, Steel Panther) on guitar!!!!! Search WAR & PEACE - Heaven Is Waiting, Youtube will not let me put the link in this message
Yes, should get rid of Don as "Pilson writes the shit anyway" change name to DoKKened and fire the damn camera guy who films George's lead parts in slow motion and out of sync ;)
Pilson sounded/played like this when he was 15 yrs. old.... Truly one of the most overlooked talents ever, much like G. Lynch. These guys never truly got their due. Pisses me off now and way back when... Fucking radio D.J.s and the music biz of the eighties and nineties suppressed talent for money... Knuckle Draggin' Neanderthals that they are...
Listen to 'Wicked Underground' , it's a disc put out by Lynch and Pilson a few years ago. You can really tell who the 'heart' of Dokken was when you hear it.
great voice and rendition but david lynch got lazy, why mess with an awesome solo and although this one was excellent it wasn't the solo that made the song famous, a bit disappointing
dude, your totally right...in fact when i used to cover a song (usually slayer, testament or sepultura) i would do the solos exactly the same cos its gay when a solo is improvised like that.
George wanted to showcase some of his newer crap but he should play what they came to hear...
It really surprised me that no one mention that he did the voice of Johnny Cage for Mortal Kombat 2011!

I WISH guitar would come back into style!!!
I'm so SICK of guitars tuned so low you can't even tell what's going on.
Let's not forget the cookie monster voice.
A guy works his WHOLE life at this stuff (SINCE I WAS 3!!!) and people would rather hear Justin Gaga.
I'm honestly SHOCKED that people stand for it. You just can't make it with talent alone anymore.

this was great until they showed lynches solo in slow motion... It totally ruined the timing and feel of lynch's presence!!!!

@nehocyrrah Totally agree. I hate dumb ass pointless camera effects...

Peace

Listen to 'Wicked Underground' , it's a disc put out by Lynch and Pilson a few years ago. You can really tell who the 'heart' of Dokken was when you hear it.

I remember Jeff playing bass and singing for the Randy Hansen band back in like *81 , Jeff's always had a good strong voice.

great voice and rendition but david lynch got lazy, why mess with an awesome solo and although this one was excellent it wasn't the solo that made the song famous, a bit disappointing
krzifngrs 1 year ago
dude, your totally right...in fact when i used to cover a song (usually slayer, testament or sepultura) i would do the solos exactly the same cos its gay when a solo is improvised like that.
George wanted to showcase some of his newer crap but he should play what they came to hear...
