I just love this song. It brings back such strong and powerful memories from my childhood. My grandmother would play Donovan for me whenever I visited, and this was our favorite. Thank you for posting this.
I love this picture with Donovan and Jenny Boyd (Patty Boyd's younger sister) playing the wooden flute. It is such a maigical picture - lucky Jenny, got to be a part of this photo! Alas, she also had Donovan write the song for her, "Jennifer Juniper."
I love this song and only wish it had been released but only on the out of print LP, Donovan Live in Japan 1973, never to be released on a CD or any American LP..
Yes, this is live from The Smothers Brothers show. My friend Jeff and I memorized every line. There was some sort of strike so Donovan and his guitar was the only music, no studio band. The result was that instead of a lot of skits and maybe two songs by Donovan as guest he got to perform for most of the show, just him and his guitar at the height of his powers—great stuff. We loved him so much we hung on every word, even when he rambled.
I have been a fan of Donovan's for many, many years, well since I was a young girl. This song is just fantastic. I have been followng Donovan's career for a long time & have been fortuanate to have seen him in various venues over the years. His style today is kind of different in his vocal & guitar style but I am still a fan. But I do have to admit to loving this song, vocal & guitar style of many years ago now. Today he sings & plays guitar with sort of a calypso & arrangments not so folkish.

I think this may be from the Smothers Brothers TV show, late 1968 or early 1969.

I think this is from Live in Japan 1973, don't think he ever played this gem on Smother's Brothers, never officially released on a studio album.

I've seen him perform this live in 2001 or 2002, such a shame it never made an album, barring "Live in Japan 1973" i believe.
